-This invention relates to an improvement in locks and has as one oi its objects to pro- 'vide a, lock which, without alteration or parts therein, and also a keeper iorthe loclrV l5 bolt so that the lock is secured to one sash ot a window and the keeper 'to thejother sash,v or the lock is secured to the door and the keeper to the door frame and therefore considerable tiineis ordinarily required "in installing such locks as a. considerable :num-
ber of screws must be employed to secure the parts in place and therefore the invention vhas as its obj ect to provide a lock which will require but a single screw to secure it in place upon a window sash and, where employed temporarily as a lock for a door, may be employed without the` necessityV ot securingitin place through the medium of a screw. A
Another object or' the invention is to provide a lool; which will be secure when. adjusted to locking position and which will not require the use of keys or any other means for adjusting the saine to lock or release the window or door-parts with which it is associated. n
l/Vhile the .accompanying drawings and the description which is to follow, consti- V tute a disclosure oiC the preferred embodiment of the inventioinit will be understood that Various changes may-be made within the scope ofwhat is claimed.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure l is a View in side elevation orn the lock embodying the invention installed upon the upper and lower sashes of a window;
Figure 2 is a top plan View of the lock inv stalled upon a door and door i"'rame; A
Figure 3 is a vertical front to Vrear sectional View through the lock installed upon corners with ,struck up shown in Figure l; i f.
ligure 4cis a vertical transverse sectional theupper and 'lower sashes ot a. window as view taken substantially on the line iL-v4 ed by the arrows; y
TWO. ,r. i i iguiV o is a view part-Vy in top planand oit Figure 5 looking in the direction indicatpartly in section ofthe lock, the parts bey ing arranged to occupy a common plane, to better illustrate the construction and relationship of the parts and the structure; Figure 6 isa view partly in top planand partly lin, horizontal section illustrating the locking member of the lock;V y
Figure '7 is a plan View of the pawl which is associated with the locking member shown `in Figure 6.
lThe lock embodying the invention differs materially ki'romloclrs of the-ordinary types inasmuch als it consists essentially of a combined attaching and dctent member and a locking and vpawl member which is associatedtherewith, and inthe drawing the att .ching and detent member is indicated in general by the numeral l and comprises a base fplate 2 which is of the rectangular `form shown-most clearly in Figure 5 of the drawing and which is provided vnear its outer spurs indicated lby the numeral 3 and the said base plate is also formed with an opening indicated by the numeral 4. The attaching and detent member further includes a substantially cylindrical head 5 which is formed integrally at that end of the attaching'V plate opposite the end at which the anchoring spurs 3 are located, and, tor a purposevto be presently ,described2 thehead 5 is formed axially with a cylindrical boreindicated by the numeral( 6. Likewise for a purpose which will presently be pointed out, the head 5 is osct with respect'to the planev of the attaching plate 2 so that one face of the plate occupies a plane substantially tangentialto the surface of the said-head, and the adjacent portion of thesaid surface of the head is .formed with transversely extending teeth which are indicated by the numeral 7. It willnow be observed, by reference to Figures. l and 3 of the drawing, which igures illustrate thel Iii application'o't the lock to the sashes ot' a window, that in applying the lock to the window, the plate 2 ot the combined keeper and attaching member 1 is disposed against the inner tare of the lower rail oi the upper sash and the spurs 3 are caused to penetrate the wood of which the rail is formed, a securing screw S heilig litted through the opening et and threaded into the rail so as to firmly secure the plate in place against the said inner face oi the rail and witht-he lower side of the head 5 resting against the upper side of the said rail. In this manner the member 1 is securely anchored in place with the em lo nient of but asingle screw andE the connection of the member with the said lower rail of the upper sash is a very secure one, it being observed by reference to Figures 1 and 3 that, when the upper and lower sashes are both closed, the outer side of the upper rail of tlielower sash will engage against the inner tace ot. the plate 2, and inasmuch" as these faces of the rails are ordinarily correspondingly beveled as shown in the said Figures 1 and 3, the plate 2 will be securely confined between the rails when the sashes are, as stated, both in closed position.
The locking'ei restraining unit of the locl: is indicated in general by the numeral 9 andthe same includes a one-piece member 10 which constitutes an' abutment to engage the upper side or" the upper rail of the lower sash ot a window, when` the lock is applied upon a window, to prevent raising et' the lower sashor lowering of the upper sash. Hhe said member 10coinprises spaced side portions 11 and a 'connecting body portion 12 which extends between and is integrally connected with corresponding longitudinal edges of the side portions 11, the said edges of the said side portions and the saidI transversey web or connecting portionv 12 being curved upwardly as indicated by the numeral 13, at one end of the member so as to provide a rounded surface and adapt tliis'portion of the member to constitute ay finger piece. rlhe sideportions 11 ot the member 10 extend beyond the other end of the web or connecting portion 12 to provide pivot ears ll which are formed with opposit'ely located openings 15, and these ears are disposed to straddle the head 5, when the unit 9A is assembled with the attaching` and detent member 1, a pivot pin 16 being itted through the bore t3A of the head 5 and having its projecting ends engaging in theropenings 15, the member 1() being in this manner pivotally connected with the head 5 so that it may be swung to occupy the locking' or restraining position shown in tullY lines in Figure 1 of the drawing or the inactive or released position shown in dotted lines in the said figure. That end of the connectin g por tion 12 beyond which the side portions 11 extend is formed with an upwardly and thence inwardly deflected flange 17 which constitutes a fulcrum for the pawl of the lock, which pawl is indicated in general by the numeral 18. The said pawl 18 is preterably formed of sheet metal and comprises an approximately rectangular body which is preferably longitudinally curved as shown in Figure 3 oi" the drawing andthis body is provided with a downwardly extending ilange-19 terminating in a branch 2O which extends in the direction of that end of the pawlx whichis to be engaged by the finger in releasing the lock. It will be observed by reference to Figure 3 that the flange 19 and its extended portion 20, which latter portion extends beneath and is spaced from the body 18, constitute means which is en-` gaged with the fulcrum flange 17' to mount the member 18 for rocking movement upon the member 10, and in orderthat the pawl 18 may coact with the teeth 7 otthehead 5, its Y end adjacent which the ulcrum 20 is located, is beveled to provide an engaging edge 21 which is designed t0 engage the teeth 7 in.
the manner clearly shown in Figures 1 and 3 of. the drawing. In order that the pawl may be yieldably held in engagement with the teeth 7 of the head' 5, a leaf spring 22 is secured at one end as at 23 by a rivet or the like to the tulcrum flange 17 andl extends outwardly and in spaced relation to the connecting portion 12 ofthe member 10 and is curved away from the plane of' the said member to bear at its free end' portion against' that side of the pawl 18 which is presented toward the said connecting portion 12.
Frein the 'foregoing description and 'by reference to Figures 1^ and 3 of the drawing it will be evidentr that 1nv usingA the lock in connection with the sashes otawviiidow', the attaching plate 2 et the combined attaching and detent unit 1 is secured to the inner face or" the lower rail ot the upper sash in the manner previously described and it will be evident by reference to the said Figures 1 and -lthat, when the edge 21 of the pawl18 is tree'from engagement with the teeth 7 it may ride in contact with the smooth sur* face of the head 5' above the said teeth and the unit 9 may be caused to assume the dotted line positionshown in Figure 1 of' the drawing. With the unit 9 in this position, the lower sash may. be raised or the upper sash maybe lowered, or both sashes may be adjusted as stated without any interference on the part et the unit 9. However when the sashes are both closed, the unit 9 may be swung downwardly and inwardly to assume the tull line position shown i-n, Figures 1 andY whereupon, insuch movement, the edge 21 et the pawl 18 will ride over the teeth 7 of the head 5 of' the detent unit 1 and engage against one of these teeth at, the
llll
time its connecting portion 12 assumes a position resting upon the upper side of the upper rail of the lower sash of the windowwhereupon the unit 9 willy be locked in the full line position shown in Figures 1 and 3 and the lower sash will be restrained against any upward movement and the upper sash against any downward movement. In order to permit of raising of the lower sash or lowering of the upper sash, itis of course only necessary to depress the inner end of the pawl 18 to disengageits edge 21 from the teeth 7 of the head 5, whereupon the` unit 9 may be swung bodily upwardly to the dotted line position shown in Figure l as previously described. 1
Figure 2 of the drawing illustrates the manner in which the device may be employed as a lock upon a door and from this figure it will be observed that in thisuse of the device, the attaching plate 2 of the attaching and detent member l is disposed against the inner side of the door Vframe and held in place by the engagement of the spurs 3 in the stile of said frame, Vthe'unit- 9 being adapted to be swung into and out of position to engage against the inner side of the door in the closed position of the door. It will be evident that in this use of the device it may be Vemployed without the necessity of using a securing screw such as the screw'8 or, if it is to be a permanent fixture, such a screw may be employed.
Having thus described the invention, what l' claim is: l Y
