This invention relates to glue applying mechanism adapted for use in carton making machines or in association with any instrnmentality where the use of such mechanism is desirable.
One object of the invention is to provide an improved mechanism that operates automatically to apply adhesive to the sealing flap of a carton' blankor the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved glue applying mechanism the operation of which is controlled by the presence of a blank therein.
Another object of the invention is-to provide an improved glue applying mechanism that conserves the supply of adhesive while at the same time applying the proper amount thereof "to the blank to insure efficient sealing.
A further object of the invention is to provide a simply constructed, inexpensive and highly eflicient glue applying mechanism not likely to get out of order and requiring minimum attention by the operator. Other objects of the invention will appear as the following description thereof proceeds. g
This application is a division of, my copending application Serial No. 158,978, filed,

The glue applying ,mechanism as herein I I shown, is assoclated with, and preferably driven from a carton "making machine. Journaled in suitable Ibear ings on one of the frame pieces 24 is a short vertical shaft 28 the upper endzof which has fixed thereon a bevel gear. .29. The bevel gear '29 meshes with a bevel gear 30 fixed on the shaft 23 which thus serves 'to drive the shaft 28. Fixed on the lower end of the 1.28 is LOU a bevel gear 31 that meshes with a bevel gear 32 which is fixed on a shaft 32 extending longitudinally of the machine and journaled in suitable bearings on one of the frame pieces 24 and one of the frame pieces 25. The shaft 32, which is thus driven from the shaft 28, has fixed thereon a worm gear 33 which meshes with a worm gear 34 which is fixed on a shaft 35 journaled in suitable bearings on the frame pieces 24.
The shaft 35 has fixed thereon a sprocket 36 around which passes a chain 37 that also passes around a sprocket 38 that is fixed on a shaft 39 journaled in suitable bearings on the frame pieces 24. Fixed on the shaft 39 is a spur gear 40 that meshes with a spur gear 41 which is fixed on a shaft 42 journaled in suitable hearings on the frame pieces 24. The shafts 35 and 42, together with the above described gearing connecting the same, serve to drive opposed blank carrying tapes 43 and 44 between which the blanks B are fed successively by hand or by suitable mechanism for this purpose such as described in my copending application Serial No. 158,978, above referred to. The tapes'43 and 44 pass around suitable pulleys which are fixed on shafts 35 and 42 and on shafts 45 and 46, the last named shafts being journaled in suitable bearings on the frame pieces 24. The pulleys on the shafts 35 and 42 are indicated at 47 and 48 respectively (Fig. 4) and the pulleys on the shafts 45 and'46 are indicated at 49 and 50 respectively.
' As eachblank B is carried forwardly by the tapes 43, 44 a side sealing flap G of said blank is bent upwardly by a flap bender 51 (Fig. 4). This flap bender may be of any suitable construction such, forexample, as disclosed in my copending application Serial No. 158,978, and since said flap bender forms no part of the present invention, it is unnecessary to describe the same in detail. The blank B with the sealing flap C bent up, is then'carried forwardly by the tapes 43, 44 and delivered to a turning roll 52 which takes the blank, turns it angularly to said tapes-and delivers it to feed rollers which feed the blank past the glue applying mechanism and then into-the carton making machine as will presently appear. The turning roll 52 may be of any suitable construction such, for example, as disclosed in my copending application Serial No. 158,958, and since said. turning roll forms no part of the present invention itis unnecessary to describe the same in detail. It is sufficient to note that the turning roll 52 is fixed on a shaft 53 which is journaled in suitable bearings on'the frame pieces 25 and driven through themedium of a bevel gear 54 fixed on the shaft 32 and a bevel gear 55 that meshes with the bevel gear 54 and is fixed on'the shaft 53 (Fig. 2).
The turning roll 52 at a certain time in its operation, releases the blank B which is then delivered to means for feeding the blank past the glue applying mechanism and into the carton making machine. Said means may be of any suitable construction but as herein disclosed the same preferably comprises two sets of feeding rolls which are located below the turning roll. The upper set of feeding rolls between which the blank first passes are indicated at 56 and 57 and are driven at the same surface speed as the turning roll 52. Beneath the rolls 56, 57 is a second set of feeding rolls which are indicated 58, 59 and driven at a somewhat higher rate of speed in order to feed the blank rapidly into the carton making machine.
The rolls-56 are carried on a shaft 60 mounted in suitable hearings on the frame of the machine and are driven by means of a sprocket 61 mounted on the shaft 60, a sprocket 62 mounted on the turning roll shaft 53, and a sprocket'chain 63 which passes around the sprockets 61 and 62. The rolls 58 are carried on a shaft 64 mounted in suitable bearings on the machine framework and driven through a sprocket 65- mounted on shaft 64, a sprocket 66 mounted on the shaft 60, and-a chain 67 which passes around the sprockets 65 and 66. The rolls 57, which bear against the rolls 56, are carried on a shaft 68 that is journaled in the upwardly extending arms of bell-cranks 69 mounted loosely on a shaft 7 0. Suitable springs 71 bearing against the rearwardly extending arms of bell-cranks 69, press the rolls 57 yieldingly against the rolls 56. The rolls 59 are mounted on a shaft 7 2 journaled in the lower ends ofarms 7 3 clamped on the shaft 70. The shafts 64 and 72 are rotated together by means of a pair of gears 74 "and 7 5, respectively. The shafts 60 and 68 are rotated together positively by means of gears 7 6 and 77 mounted on said shafts.
Carried in suitable bearings on the machine framework and disposed adjacent the rolls 56, 57, is a horizontal shaft 78 (Fig. 2) which carries at one end a glue roll 79. This glue roll 79 runs in a glue pot 80 and is provided with a scraper 81 to control the amount of glue on the glue roll 79.
The shaft 78:is-provided with a sprocket merino a rubber covered glue roll .86, which turns in contact with, the glue roller 7 9 and is driven therewith through .a gear 87 mounted on shaft 718, whichgear engages with a gear 88mounted on shaft 85. A pressure roll 89 'is carried on a'shaft 9.0 mounted on the upper end of an arm 91 pivoted at 92 in the glue roll bracket. Shaft is provided with :a gear "93 which meshes with gear 88 on shaft '85 thereby driving the roll 89 at thesamespeed as the roll 86. The arm 91 is moved to the left as viewed in Fig. 2 through the action of a connecting rod94 attached to the :upper end of the arm 91, the other :end of the connecting rod being attached to a bell-crank lever 95 pivoted at 95 .on a stationary part of the machine. The lever 95 carries a roll 96 which bears against a .cam '97 on shaft 32. Movement toflthe left of arm :91 carries the roll 89 thereon away from the roll 86. The roll 89 is urged toward the glue roll86-through the action of a spring 98. It is desirable to hold the pressure roll 89 out of contact a with the glue roll 86 unless there is a carton blank present :to receive a stripe of glue from the glue roll 86. preferably provided whereby, if a carton blank is not present between the feeding rollers 56and 57, the arm 9l'with the pressure roll 89 is held in an outward position against the action of the spring 98. This means is preferably comprised by the fol lowing instrumentalities.
Mounted on the arm 91 is a finger 99 (Fig. 3) which is fixed on one end of'a shaft 100 journaled on said arm, the other end of the shaft 100 being provided with a detector finger 101 which projects into the downward path "of travel of the carton blank. The lower end of the finger 99, in its normal position is adapted to engage the .end of a pin102 carried in a stationary part of the.
glue roll bracket. Then the finger 99 engages the end of the pin 102, it holds the arm 91 in its outward position against the action of the spring 98. When the carton blank is fed into position to receive a stripe of glue on the side sealing flap, the -advancing' edge of the carton blank strikes the detector finger 101 and swings the finger 99 out of engagement with the pin 102. der these conditions, when the roll 96 rides off the high part .of the cam 97 the arm 91 is allowed to rock and swing the roller 89 Means are therefore into contact with the ;side sealing flap of the blank, which flap is then pressed by" the roller 89 firmly against the glue roll ,86
Th bcamz 7 is sh ped o that the p s re roll 89 is moved into engagement with the blank just as the side sealing flap passes between the glue roll 86 and said pressure roll and the cam moves the pressure roll out of contact with thesidesealing flap just before it passes out of engagement between the glue roll and the pressure roll. ,"This insures that there will be no glue deposited on the pres sure roll, as anyglue on this roll would be deposited on the inside of the side sealing flap where it would cause the carton to stick into the carton making machine to be acted on by the instrumentalities which make the blank into a carton or container. While the glue applying mechanism is herein disclosed in association with a carton making ma: chine, said mechanism may be used independently or in association with any other instrumentality withwhich the use of glue applying mechanism is desirable.
It is therefore to beexpressly understood that the present invention is not limited to the particular embodiment thereof herein disclosed or otherwise than by the terms of the, appended claims.
lVhat is claimed is: V I 1. In combination, a glue .roller and a pressure roller bodilymovable relatively in opposite directions, blank feeding means ex? tending substantially at right angles to the axes of the glue and pressure rollers and adapted to feed a carton blank so that a flap the glue rolls, it is fed by the rolls 58, 59 i bentfrom the body ,of'said: blank passes between said rollers, means for mcving on'e roller toward and away from the other as the bent fiap passes therethrough whereby glue is applied on one sideof the bent flap by said glue roller, and means movable with and relative to one roller for preventing relative bodily movement of the rollers in the event a blank is not fed by said feeding 2. In combination, a glue roller and a for swinging the arm whereby the roller thereon is moved toward and away from the other roller, a shaft journaled on the arm, a stop device, and a blank operated member fixed on said shaft and controlling the swinging movement of said arm through engagement of said member with and disengagement of the same from said stop device.
4. In combination, a glue roller and a pressure roller, a pivotally mounted arm carrying one of said rollers, means for swinging the arm in opposite directions so that the roller thereon is moved toward and away from the other roller, a stop element arranged adjacent, the path of movement of said arm, means pivoted on the arm adapted to swing in one direction to engage the stop element and thereby prevent swinging movement of the arm, and a blank operated detector for swinging said means in the opposite direction to prevent its engagement with said stop element.

In combination, a glue roller and a pressure roller, means for driving both rollers, a pivotally mounted arm carrying one of said rollers, means cam-operated in one direction and spring-operated in the opposite direction, for swinging the arm so that the roller thereon is moved toward and away from the other roller, a rock shaft journaled on the swinging arm,'a stop and blank operated means carried on said rock shaft adapted to control the swinging movement of said arm through engagement of said blank operated means with and disengagment of the same from said stop.

In combination, a glue roller and a pressure roller, a pivotally mounted arm carrying said pressure roller, means for swinging the arm so that the pressure roller is moved toward and away from the glue roller, a rock shaft journaled on the arm substantially at right angles to the pivotal axis thereof, a stationary stop element disposed in spaced relation with the swinging arm, a stop member on said rock shaft adapted to engage the stop element and prevent swinging movement of the arm, and a finger on the rock shaft adapted to be engaged by a carton blank to rock said shaft whereby the stop member thereon is prevented from engaging said stop element.

In combination, a glue roller and a pressure roller, rotatable devices having their axes extending substantially at right angles to the axes of the glue and pressure rollers, said devices being adapted to feed a blank so that a fiap bent angularly to the blank body passes between said rollers, means for moving one roller toward the other to engage the flap therebetween and apply glue to one side of said flap, a stop, and a blank controlled member movable with and relative to said roller moving means and adapted to control the operation including a driven gear fixed on the axis thereof, means for driving the other roller comprising a gear fixed on the axis thereof and meshing with said driven gear, means for bodily moving the rollers relatively in opposite directions to thereby apply adhesive to a blank, a stop, and a blank con-v trolled member movable with and relative to said roller moving means andadapted to control the movement of the latter through engagement of said member with and disengagement of the'same from said sto 9 In combination, a glue roller, means for driving the glue roller including a driven gear fixed on the axis thereof, a pressure roller, means for driving the'pressure roller comprising a gear fixed on the axis thereof and meshing with said driven gear, means for moving the pressure roller toward and away from the glue roller to provide for application of' glue thereby to a blank, a stop pin, a blank controlled member movable with and relative to said roller moving means and adapted to control the movement of the latter through engagement of said member with and disengagement of the same from stop pin, and means for pivotally mounting said blank controlled member on the roller moving means.
10. In combination, a glue roller, means for driving the glue roller' including a driven gear fixed on the axis thereof, a pivotally mounted arm, a pressure roller mounted on the arm, means for moving the arm and the pressure roller toward and away from the glue roller to provide for application of glue thereby to a blank, means for driving the pressure roller comprising a gear fixed on the axis thereof and meshing with said driven gear, a stationary stop pin arranged ad acent the path of movement of the pivotally mounted arm, and a blank controlled member pivoted on said arm substantially at right angles'to its pivotal axis and adapted to control the bodily movement of the arm and the pressure roller through engagement of said member with and disengagement of the same from said stationary stop pin. v
11. In combination, a glue roller and a pressure roller, a member on which one of said rollers is mounted, means adapted to feed a blank past the rollers to be engaged therebetween and receive adhesive from the glue roller, means on said member for guiding the blank during its movement past the rollers, means for moving the member and the roller carried thereby toward and away from the other roller, a stop device, and a blank controlled element pivoted on said member and controlling the movement thereof through engagement of said element with and disengagement of the same from said stop device.
12. In combination, a glue roller and a pressure roller, a pivotally mounted arm carrying the pressure roller, means for feed- 7 ing a blank past the rollers to be engaged therebetween and receive adhesive from the glue roller, a guide member on the pivotally mounted arm for guiding the blank during its movement past the rollers, means for swinging the arm and the pressure roller toward and away from the glue roller, a stop device, and a blank controlled member pivoted on said arm and controlling the movement thereof through engagement of said member with and disengagement of the same from said stop device.
