' SHADE HOLDER FOR PORTABLE ELECTRIC LAMPS Filed Aug. 20, 1929 INVENTOR 1 MICHAEL B. BOWEN ATTORNEYS Patented June 24, 1930 UNETE' erase MICHAEL B. BOWEN, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOB TO FAR-IES MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS .z Tr
SHADE HOLDER FOR PORTABLE ELECTRIC LAMPS Application filed August 20, 1929. Serial No. 387,190.
My invention relates more particularly to portable desk lamps which have an adjustable arm which carries the lighting element, and in which one side of the shade is provided with a slot which will span the arm, this slot usually being provided with some sort of means for conveniently changing the shade.
As is well known, these shades are usually formed of glass, and the glass is very irregular, so that it becomes oiiiicult to attach the securing means because of the holes getting out of register, and if the holes are placed properly in register then the holder fails to clamp the shade with a sullicient degree of firmness.
My invention has for its objects, to provide a shade holder which under all circumstances will hold the shade firmly and in horizontal position; and to provide clamping means which will clamp it, regardless of the irregularities of the shade, in such a manner that it will be securely locked in position, yet the locking means will I not 2 change the shade nor twist it out of the horizontal position which it should properly occupy.
My means for accomplishing the foregoing objects may be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, which are hereto annexed and are a part of this specification, in which i Fig. l is a side elevation of a portable desk lamp equipped with my improved shade holder;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary detail view of the shade holder, sholving one of the means for locking the shade in position;
Fig. 3 is a cross-section, taken on 3--3 in Fig. 2;
Fig. l is a detail elevation of holder; and
Fig. 5 is a cross-section taken on the line 5-5 in Fig. 4.
Similar reference numerals refer to sumthe line the shade lar parts throughout the entire description.
In the drawings is shown a desk lamp, raving a base 1, standard 2, adjustable arm 3, and shade 4. The shade 4 is shown equipped with my improved holder, which, as more clearly seen in the detail views, comprises a pair of plates 5 and 6, and an intermediate plate 7.
The plate 6 is provided with a peripheral flange 8, which is adapted to contact the shade a, and the edge of the flange 8 is formed to fit the configuration of the shade l, so as to give a neatly finished appearance to the device when attached. The central portion of the plate 6 is cut away to form an arch, the vertical edges of which are formed into Vshapcd tongues 9 which are adapted to form guides. On the arm 8 I mount a guide-plate 10, the edges of which are formed with a V-shaped groove 11 which is fitted to and coincides with the V-shaped tongues 9 on the plate 6. At thebottom of the plate 6, and on each side of the archlike opening therein, I provide a flat flange 12, upon which rests the lower edge 13 of the shade l at each side of a slot formed therein which is adapted to span the arm 3, thereby insuring the shade a being held in horizontal position. In the plate 6 I provide a pair of slotted apertures 14 for the passage of screws 15, which are adapted to v register with threaded apertures 16 i'ormed in the plate The screws 15 pass through apertures 17 formed in the intermediate plate 7.
The intern'lediatc plate 7, having an arenate flange 19 on its upper edge, is mounted between the plates 5 and 6. This plate 7 also has a central arch-lil'e opening, corresponding in shape to the arch-like openings formed in plates 5 and 6.
The plate 5 is formed with a curved shoulder 18, adapted to lit the curvature of the shade l adjacent its slot. Plate 5 also has a pair of threaded openings 16, adapted to receive the ends of screws 15. In the lower part of this plate'5 I also provide a pair of slotted openings 20, to register with a pair of apertures 21 formed in plate 6. Screws 22 are adapted to pass through these apertures 21 and slotted openings 20 and enter threaded apertures 23 formed eccentrically in serrated-edges camshaped members 2i. Plate 5 also has detents 25 adjacent its lower edge, said detents 25 being struck up from the metal forming the plate 5, im mediately below the slotted openings 20.
The device is assembled as follows:
The plate 6 is placed on the outside of the shade at, with its peripheral flange 8 contacting the shade 4. The intermediate plate 7 is then placed in position, its arcuate flange 19 being adapted to engage the curva ture at the top of the slot formed in the shade at. Plate 5 is then placed in position, and the screws 15 are passed through the slotted apertures let in plate 6, apertures 17 in intermediate plate 7, and enter the threaded apertures 16 in plate 5. Screws 22 are then passed through apertures 21 in plate 6 and slotted openings 20 in plate 5, and caused. to engage the threaded apertures 23 in the cam-shaped members 24.
Owing to the slot-ted apertures let in plate 6, it is possible to slide the intermediate plate 7 up against the top of the slot formed in the shade 4, when by tightening the screws 15 the intermediate plate 7 and the shade & are firmly held. The pair of slots 20 in plate 6 provide for compensating any irregularities in the shape or configuration of the shade t. When this adjustment is made, the serrated-edged cams 2st are tightened by means of the screws 22, the serrations on the cams 2t engage the struckaip detents 25, and this has the effect of locking the screws 22, and in turn the plates 5 and G, firmly in position, so that they will not loosen readily, regardless of how many times the shadeamay be changed.
Having described my invention, what I regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
