for the purpose of drawing the rim together and closely embracing the lens mounted therein. Heretofore the screw has been unguarded in the mounting and if not tightened occasionally it soon works loose and drops out, thus allowing the rim to spring open and the lens to disengage itself from the mounting.
With the foregoing clearly in mind it is the purpose of my invention to provide a guard for the screw after it has been tightened to close the rim, so as to prevent the screw from accidentally working loose.
I accomplish this object by means of the device hereinafter described, set forth in the claims and illustratively exemplified in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of a fragment of an eyeglass rim, lens and screw guard; and Figure 2 is an end elevational view of the gitudinal section and the screw guard in closed position.
Referring to the drawing, 10 denotes a lens and 11 the rim in which the lens is supported. At its outer mid-portion the rim 11 is split substantially transversely thereof so as to enable the same to be spread to insert or remove the lens. Integral with the rim 11 and disposed tangently thereof at the split is a cylindrical boss 12 which is separated by a cutforming a continuation of the split of the rim, so as to provide each end of the rim at the split with a portion of the boss 12.
The boss is provided with a bore 13 which is threaded in the end projecting into the rim, showing the split section thereof in 1on adjustable in the other to upper portion of the boss, and which receives a screw 14 carried by the lower portion of the boss and adjustable in the threaded upper portion to clampthe two ends of the rim together after the lens is in place, the head of the screw abutting the lower end of the lower portion of the boss.
The screw 14, after having been adjusted to close the rim, is prevented from working itself out of place by means of a guard 15 comprising a stirrup shaped strap which is pivotally carried supported at the free ends of its arms on a pin 16 projecting transversely through the upper portion of the boss 12, the ends of the pin being turned over to provide heads overlying the adjacent portions of the arms. The closed end of the stirrup swings towards 'therim and embraces the lower portlon of the boss and head of the'screw 14. as illustrated particularly in Figure 2. In accordance with this arrangement the screw 14 is prevented from working loose and allowing the rim to spread.
Having described my invention in detail,

what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In combination, a split lens rim for eyeglasses having a tangential projection divided along the line of the split, a screw adjustable in the projection to clamp the rim closed, and a strap pivotally mounted at one end on one section of the projection to longitudinally embrace the latter along its full length and to engage over the screw head to prevent accidental removal thereof.
2. In combination, a lens rim divided radially thereof and having projections on opposite sides of the division, a screw projecting through one of the projections and connect and clamp the rim together, and a U-shaped strap guard longitudinally embracing the projections and pivotally mounted on opposite sides of one of the projections, the closed end of the strap being movable into position to embrace the head of the screw.
