Description

F. HOLTON.
DRUMHEAD TIGHTENER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE s, 1908.
Patented Oct. 25, 1910.
UNITED STATES PATENT FRANK HOLTON', OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO FRANK HOLTON & CGMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
DRUIVII-IEAD-TIGI-ITENER.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK HoLroN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drumhead-Tighteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in drum head tighteners and the object of the same is to provide an improved, simple, efficient and effective means for clamping and tightening the heads of drums and the like.
To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful ob jects, as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing illustrating an exemplification of the invention, and in which- Figure 1 is a detail elevation of a portion of a drum showing a plurality of tighteners attached thereto constructed in accordance with the principles of this invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the clips for securing one member of the tightener in position. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the member which is secured to the body of the drum for securing the other member of the tightener in position. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the members of the tightener. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the fastening means for securing the member to the body portion of the drum.
Referring more particularly to the drawing and in the present exemplification of the invention the numeral 10 designates the body portion of a drum, 11 a portion of the head and 12 the ring or rim which surrounds and engages the heads. These parts are of the ordinary construction and form no part of the present invention.
suitable member constructed of any suitable material, preferably of metal and comprising a body portion 13 having an aperture 14 passing therethrough, is provided on two of its opposite edges with spaced hook-shaped portions 15. The hook shaped portions on each end are arranged opposite a corresponding hook-shaped portion on the opposite end so that the spaces 16 formed between the respective hook-shaped Specification of Letters Patent.

portions will also be arranged opposite each other. This member 13 may be secured to the body portion 10 of the drum in any desired or suitable manner, preferably by means of a. fastening screw or bolt 17 which passes through the body portion of the drum from the inner face thereof, and if de sired a washer 18 may be disposed between the head of the fastening device and the face of the body of the drum. A spacing washer 19 of any desired configuration may be provided and disposed between the outer face of the body portion of the drum 10 and the member 13, as shown more clearly in Fig. 2 of the drawings, so that the fastening device 17 will pass through the washer 19 and the aperture 14 in the member 13, after which the extremity of the fastening bolt may be upset as at 20.
The clamp proper preferably comprises two members 21, One of the members 21 is preferably tubular, as shown, and is provided with internal screw threads and projecting laterally from one extremity thereof are lugs or extensions 23. The other member 22 is preferably in the form of a bolt having a threaded extremity of a diameter to fit within the tubular portion 21 so that the threads thereon will engage the threads in the tubular portion so that the member 22 may be bodily adjusted longitu dinally with respect to the member 21 when the latter is held from rotation and the member 22 is axially rotated.
A suitable clip designated generally by the reference numeral 2a comprises a body portion having a hook-shaped extremity 25 which is adapted to project over and engage the outer edge of the ring 12. Secured to the body portion of the clip is a boss or projection 26 which is provided with an aper ture 27 extending longitudinally therethrough. This boss 26 may be secured to the clip in any desired or suitable manner and is adapted to receive the member 22. This member is preferably provided with a smooth portion 28 and a collar 29 adjacent an angular shaped extremity 30 so that when the member 22 is passed through the aperture 27 in the boss, the collar 29 will engage one edge of the boss 20 and the member 22 will be adapted for free axial rotation.
In use the lateral projections 2-3 on the member 21 are placed in engagement with the hook-shaped portions 15 on one side of the member 13 so that a portion of the mem- I ber 21 will project through the bifurcation 16 between the portions 15 and the hook shaped extremity 25 of the member 2a is engaged over the outer edge of the ring 12. These members are connected by means of the member 22 which passes through the boss 26 and into the tubular portion of the member 21 and when in this position the member 22 may be axially rotated by means of a suitable key or wrench engaging the angular extremity 30 to bodily adjust the member 22 with respect to the member 21 to draw the ring 12 down upon the portion 11 of the drum to tighten the head. The member 22 may be of a suitable length to permit the member 24 to be detached from the ring 12 and the extremity of the member 21 to be detached from the member 13 without detaching the parts. A similar clamp is provided to engage the other ring of the drum and the other extremity of the member 13. Any number of these clips may be provided and may be spaced any desired distance from each other around the periphery of the body portion of the drum.
lVith this improved construction it will be apparent that the member 22 is not only rotatably connected to the drum but is also detachably secured thereto and that the member 21 also has a detachable connection with the body of the drum. lVhen it is desired to remove either one or both of the clamps of one pair of clamps, all that is necessary is to axially rotate the member 22 to cause the same to move bodily with respect to the member 21 to move the member 24; away from the member 13 after which the parts may be readily detached. With this improved construction it will also be apparent that the heads of the drum may be individually tightened or removed without interfering with each other and that the clamps may themselves be quickly and readily removed.
In order that the invention might be fully understood the details of the foregoing embodiment thereof have been thus specifically described, but
What I claim as new is 1. The combination with the body and bands of a drum, of a member mounted on the body, said member being provided with a bifurcated hook, a T-shaped link in engagement with said bifurcated hook, and a second link releasably connected to one of the bands, said links being adjust-ablv connected.
2'. The combination with the body and bands of a drum, of a member mounted on the body, said member being provided with oppositely disposed portions with bifurcated hooks, Tshaped links pivotally engaging said bifurcated hooks, and other links releasably connected to the bands of said drum, said other links being respectively connected adjustably with said T-shaped links.
3. In a drum head tightener, the combination with a drum of a member, means for securing the member to the body of the drum, said member being provided with spaced hook shaped portions, a clamp comprising two members adjustably connected, one of the members being provided with projections engaging the hook shaped portions in such a manner that the body of the clamp member will stand within the space between said hook shaped portions, and axially rotatable means for detachably securing' the free end of the other clamp member to the head of the drum.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 3rd day of June A. D. 1908.
