NT @EWQ JAMES l. DOBBINS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
RAZOR STROP.
Application filed November 15, 1921.
To all tf1/10m t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JAMES F. Domains, citizen of the United States of America', residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Razor Strops, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to strops for fin ishing the edge on edge tools such as razors. Very few users of razors are able to keep the edge on their razors, due largely to improper stropping. The strop is often held so tightly that the strop scarcely touches the real edge at all, while on the other hand, if the strop is loosely held the strop rounds off the edge and ruins the blade until honed.
The main purpose of my invention is to provide an attachment for the ordinan'y razor strop which will enable the average man to maintain the proper curve and tension on all parts of the strop in its relation to the edge, and which may be sold either separately, or as a part of the strop.
Referring to the drawings in which what I now consider the preferred forms of my invention are shown;
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my attachment as applied to an ordinary strop.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of the attachment shown in Fig. 1 with the parts open for insertion into a strop.
My attachment preferably comprises a plurality of coiled springs 1 and 2 spaced apart a distance slightly greater than or equal to the breadth of the average razor strop 3, for the purpose hereinafter described. Said springs at their upper ends are fastened to a transverse bar 4, as by threading the free end of each spring through a pair of apertures 5 and 6 in the bar. Said bar may be provided with any suitable means, such as eye 7, for securing it to a fixed hook 8 or thelike. The strop is supported at the free ends of the springs.
In the preferred form of the invention, a second transverse bar 9 is supported at the free ends of the springs, said bar being threaded between the two folds or parts 10 and 11 of the strop 3. One end 2() of said bar is shown as pivotally connected to spring 2, as by threading an end of the spring through an aperture 12 in said bar. rIhe other end 21 is preferably detachably Serial No. 515,207.
secured to spring 1. For this purpose, I have shown a short slot 13 in the end of the bar, terminating in an upward extension 14 and adapted to hook over a downwardly extending loop 15, at the end of spring 1. All that one need do to apply my improved attachment to a double strop is to unhook, end 21 as shown in Fig. 3, insert bar 9 through the folds of the strop and rehook the same as shown in Fig. 1. The strop is then ready for use in the usual manner, but with this great difference in result, i. e., the strop will now yield suiiiciently on downward pressure of the razor to give the correct angle for stropping. At the same time, equal tension on both sides of the strop is maintained, due to the spaced springs and to the parallelogram design of the attachment, with its two rigid bars 4 and 9.
I am aware that resilient supports for razor strops have been heretobefore proposed, but heretofore, so far as I am aware, they have failed -to achieve success, due to their failure to support the strop at more than one point, or to the employment of rubber, which has but a very short life.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have herein described the principle of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus, which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means. Also, while it is designed to use the various features and elements in the combination and relations described, some of these may be altered and others omitted without interfering with the more general results outlined, and the invention extends to such use.
Having herein described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In a razor strop, the combination with a stropping portion and a resilient hanger for the same comprising a transverse member adapted to be secured to a support, a pair of spaced springs secured thereto at one end, and a transverse bar detachably attached to the other end of at least one of the springs and adapted to be inserted between the folds of the stropJ 2. In a razor strop, the combination with t notoh adapted to detaohably engage the a stroppng portion and e resilient hanger lower end of the other spring, whereby said for the same comprising transverse memH har may be inserted between two parte of the l0 ber adapted to he secured to a, support, a. strop while being attached, 5 plurality of Springs Secured thereto `at one n testimony whereof l have axed my end, and a transverse bar secured to one of signature. said springs at its lower end and having l JAMES F. DOBBINS.
