Description

NAROISSE A. JULIEN, OF TARRYTOWN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN WINDOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 76,642, dated April 25, 1876; application filed February 23, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NAROISSE A. JULIEN, of Tarrytown, in the county of Westchester and State'ofNew York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Windows, of which the following is a specification:
The subject of my invention isa windo with sash hinged in pairs, having circular or rule joints at the hinges and at the meetingframes, and having hanging -frames, which are made adjust-able in such a way that the window may be kept constantly plumb and tight in the ei ent of the building settling out of plumb, or any of the parts shrinking in such a manner as to tend to open the joints. The invention furtherconsists in the combination, with my improved adjustable hanging-frames, of an inside blind-stile, applied as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an inside elevation of a .Wiudow illustrating my invention, some parts beingshown in section. Fig. '2 is a vertical section thereof on the line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. file a horizontal section of the same on the line 3 3, Fig. 1.
- A represents the window-stile; B B, the outside blind-stiles; N N, parts of the windowframe; 0, the hanging-stile of the hinged sash D E; D F D D being the hinging-stiles of the sash, and E F, respectively, the convex and concave meeting-stiles at the center. To render the hanging-stiles O 0 adjustable, to compensate for any settling out of plumb in the building or any shrinkage of the parts, the said stiles are constructed with horizontal slots c,-as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3, and are held by screws S S, clamping them to the frame N, so that the sash may be set forward above or below to any extent required, and thus kept constantly plumb and tight. G represents the inside window-jamb, and H the hangingstile for inside blinds, serving also as a cap or cover for the hanging-stiles 0 C, so as to completely mask the space between said stiles and tl1 e,jamb G, and the slots and screws by which the stiles are secured. The beads or stilesH thus forma neat finish, and at the same time permit ready access to the screws S when necessary, for adjusting the stiles O G. V represents a portion' of the floor. J is a supporting-block for the outside cover P.- This cover is preferably made of sheet-zinc. Its shape is particularly shown in Fig. 2. It
serves as a water-shed, and also to cover and protect the fastenings U of outside blinds, when such blinds are used.
It will be seen that the adjacent faces of the stiles O D are concentric, as are also the adjacent faces of the meeting-stilesE F. When the meeting-stiles approach each other their faces come together, and, owing to the concentricity thereof and that of the several joints, the sashes are drawn in and assisted in their. closing operations, and when closed' NAROISSE A. JULIEN.
