This invention relates to safety razors, and more particularly to the construction of a safety razor adapted to be made in'the semblance of'and folded after the manner of an ordinary'pocket knife.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be employed as either a cross head or straight type of safety razor and in which the razor m peed willvbe securely held either of its posi ions.
A" further object of the invention is to provide a construction such that the razor head may serve as a means for supporting the blade -whil e"stropping the same and will secure the blade in either an extended stropping position or in aretracted shaving position.

Referring: now -more particularly to the drawings, the razor includesa handle 10, a m
head 11 and a standard 12 for connecting the handle to the head. The handle 10 comprises spacedside plates 13 secured to one another at one end through a s acing block 14; and at one edge at the approxlmate center thereof by securing elements 15 directed through athick ened central portion 16 of a spring element 17. The ends of this spring element are free to move but the end of the spring element at the opposite end of the handle from the spacing block 14 contacts a pin 18 connecting the side plates "13. Intermediate" thesecuring elements 15 and the pin 18, the outer face of this spring element has a hump or enlargement 19" forming a point at which the spring element may be engaged with a finger applying pressure to flex the same and cause an angular end portion 19 to be withdrawn from engagement with dentations 20 formed upon the hub21 of the standard 12 which is pivoted between I the side plates adjacent thereto. This hub has an outstanding lug 23 which contacts the upper surface ofthe angular portion 19 and provides a limit to rotationof the standard when the standard is in longitudi-'- nal alignment with the handle.
' The standard 12-is in the form of'a narrow,
flat strip projecting from one side of the hub 21 andhas projecting from-its opposite side edges pivot pins 2%. The head 11 includes a combined attaching and guard plate 25, one edge of'which is dentate,*as indicated at 26, and the ends of which adj acent'this' dentate edge are provided with pivots 27 adaptedto engage a retaining plate 28. i The; guard plate v g at its under surface and at its transverse center has atransversely extending shallow V- shaped groove 29. Resilient elements 30 confront this face and extend longitudinally thereof adjacent opposite ends of the'groove,
each of these resilient elements having formed in its uppersurface'or that surface confronting the guard plate a notch 31 which aligns with the groove 29.
These resilient elements may conveniently comprise narrow extenslons formed ad acent V opposite longitudinal edges of the guard silient elements will yield to permit the end portion 32 of the standard to-engage in the groove29 and will then maintain the engagement of the standard in this groove and thus hold the guard plate and accordingly the razor head in the transversely disposed position upon the standard. The resilient elements 30 provide therebetween at opposite sides of the groove 29 recesses which may alternately receive the standard, so that the razor head may be caused to lie at either side of the standard and when in this position,
the total thickness represented by the standard and razor head will be nogreater than the normal thickness of the razor head.- The resilient elements will, of course, retain the head in either of the last named'positions as wellas in the transverse position with relation to the standard.
The upper surface of the guard plate has extending upwardly therefrom a pair of spaced pins 33. The retaining plate consists or a flat platehaving openings 8tthrough which the pins 33' may extend and having at its ends flanges 35 in which openings are formed for the reception of the pivots 27 of the guard plate. I i l These flanges extendslightly to one side of the retaining plate and the pivot openings are formed therein and the opposite edgeof the retaining plate has directed through the upper face thereof a pin 36 which extends through the center of a bowed spring 37, the
camber of which is upwardly disposed. This spring at its center and at its rear edge is provided with a depending arm 38, the lower end of which has a hooked terminal 39 underlying the spring. The pin is of such length that it permits normal separation of the cen ter of the spring from the retaining plate. When the retaining plate is swung to its closed position where it overlies the blade 40 and the guard plate, the hooked terminal of the flange of the spring may be engaged with the under face of the guard plate by applying pressure to the spring to flex the same. Thus, the spring serves to resiliently force the retaining plate toward the guard plate and against the blade 40 and to lock the retaining plate in its closed position, forming a resiliently engaged latch. The blade 40 has openings ii at present shown as in the form of notches produced in the ends thereof for passage of thepins 33 of the guard plate. This blade may be engaged with the guard plate either with the pins passed through these openings or withv the rear edge of the blade disposed against the pins. .The first named position of the blade may be termed a shaving position and in this position the edge of the blade coacts with the dentate edge of the uard plate in the same manner that the ordinary blade coacts with the guard plate of the usual style of safety razor.

As will be noted from the foregoing, the blade can be arranged either transversely. or longitudinally of the standard. Arranged transversely of the standard, as more clearly shown by a comparison of the dotted and full line showings of Figure 2, the standard may be arran ed at variousan les with relation to the handle, so that a desired angle ofthe blade with relation to the handle maybe obtained.

While the resilient elements 30 will, to a great measure, prevent this, the stresses in strep ping are particularly heavy an'dmight pros sibly cause a deflection of the head, resulting in destruction of the strop or damage to the blade. I accordingly project th'eends ofthe side members, as indicated at4c'2, so that the lower end of therazor head lies there'between i when the shank is in its vertical position and thehead is aligned therewith. It will also be seen that when the standard is in the longitu-; dinal position referred to it will lie in the recess formed between the members 30 which When aligned with the head, the standard may also be swung to cause the edge of this head at which the blade is exposed to-lie between the side members '13 and be protected thereby, Between its fully extended position and the completely foldedposition, the head, when aligned with the standard, is free from engagement with thejside members and ac cordmgly may be oscillated from its allgned I to itstransverse' position. It will be obvious that a device of thischaracter may be very cheaply manufactured and because of its simple construction, may be conveniently manipulated in cleansing or in shifting of the device from one to another of its various positions. I
It will also be obvious that the construction hereinbefore set forth is capable of a certain r nge of change and modification without materially departing from the spirit of the invention, and I accordingly do not limit myself to such specific structure except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
1. In a razor of the type described, parallel side members secured in spaced relation to one another, a standard pivoted at one end between the side members and swingable about the pivot thereof from a position where r it extends in the same general direction as the side members and lies therebetween to a position where it aligns with the side members and extends from one end thereof, means for securing the standard in the last named po- 1 sition or in positions intermediate to the first and last-named positions, said standard being in vthe form of a flat strip and having at its longitudinal edges adjacent its free end outwardly extending pivot elements, and a razor head comprising a guard plate and resilient elements adjacent the under surface thereof having guard plate confronting faces provided with notches for the reception of said pivots, the guard plate in alignment with the notches of the resilient elements having a groove for the reception of the end. of the standard.
2.
