COMBINATION SAFETY RAZOR AND HAIR TRIMMING DEVICE Filed Aug. 20 1951 INVENTOR. L 0 A- KEARNEY Patented Mar. 2, 1954 UNITEDVSTATES PATENT OFFIE COMBINATION SAFETY RAZOR AND HAIR TRImIING DEVICE Leo Kearney, Palisades Park, N. J.
Application August 20, 1951, Serial N 0. 242,640
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a combination safety razor and hair trimming device.
More specifically, the present invention proposes the construction of an improved combination safety razor and hair trimming device having the general appearance of a safety razor oi the hoe-type andwhich employs conventional double edged razor blades in a manner so that the device can be used on one side for conventional shaving and on the other side for hair trimming purposes.
Still further, the present invention proposes constructing the device to include a cap for retaining a double edged razor blade in position on a guard which cap has on one side of its de-.
pended threaded shank a wide portion for pressing one cutting edge of the razor blade into shaving position with relation to the guard in a manner to permit that one cutting edge to be used for conventional shaving purposes.
Another object of the present invention proposes forming the cap on the other side'of its depended threaded shank with a narrow portion for holding the other cutting edge of the razor blade in a position slightly spaced from the guard in a manner so that the other cutting edge can be used for hair trimming purposes.
The present invention further proposes the provision of a plate for insertion between the cap and the razor blade in a manner to hold 1 Claim. (Cl. 30--31) both of the cutting edges of the razor blade in' a normal shaving position with relation to the guard in a manner so that both edges can be used for shaving if desired.
It is a further object of the present invention to construct a combination safety razor and hair trimming device which is simple and durable, which is efiective for its intended purposes and which can be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
On the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure: 1
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the combination safety razor and hair trimming device constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of i Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing the device with the auxiliary plate in position between the blade and the cap.
a Fig. 5 is an elevational view of the device looking in the direction of the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the auxiliary plate,'per se.
The combination safety razor and hair trimming device, according to the present invention, includes a guard I0 constructed to have the usual teeth ll along its longitudinal side edges. The center of the guard is formed with an aperture I2 and the top face thereof has grooves l4 extending longitudinally in opposite directions from the aperture l2.
Rested on the top face of the guard an, there is a conventional double edged safety razor blade l5having an aperture l6 aligned with the aperture 12 of the guard to. On opposite sides of the aperture IS, the blade 15 has slots H in alignment with the grooves Id of the guard.
Positioned over the razor blade l5, there is a cap' [8 which has depended from its bottom face a threaded shank !9. As is generally known, the shank l9 depends through the apertures l2 and I6 of the guard in and blade l5, respectively, and is threaded into the top of a knurled handle 20 for joining the parts together. The bottom face of the cap I8 on opposite sides of the shank I9 has aligned longitudinally extended ribs 21. The ribs 2| project through the slots ll of the razor blade l5 and into the grooves M of the guard l0 forholding the parts from turning relative to one another about the threaded shank l9 as a pivot.
The shank l9 and the ribs 2| are located so that the cap [8 has one wide portion l8 and one narrow portion lB located on opposite sides of the center line passing through the ribs 2|. The wide portion l8 of the cap l8 terminates just slightly inward of its respective cutting edge of the razor blade l5, see Figs. 2 and 3, for pressing and holding that cutting edge of the blade in proper shaving position with relation to the teeth ll of the guard ID.
The narrow portion l8 of the cap l8 terminates some distance inward of its respective cutting edge of the razor blade l5, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The narrow portion l8 permits its respective cutting edge of the blade to assume a position raised slightly oil the respective teeth ll of the guard In, as best shown in Fig. 3, so that the cutting edge can be used for hair trimming purposes.
The corners of the wide portion l8 of the cap l8 are formed with the usual short depending lugs 25 which engage the adjacent corner notches 28 of the double edged razor blade l5 so as to assist in maintaining the blade rigidly in position between the guard and the cap l8 when the razor is assembled.
Thus, it is apparent that the present invention provides in a single device an arrangement for holding a conventional double iedge razor blade so that one of .its edges can be used for shaving while the other is used for hair trimming purposes and which requires nothing more than rotation of the device .on the .axis of the handle 20 for bringing the edgesfinto operative position.
In Figs. 4 to 6, there is illustrated anzauxiliar-y plate 22 which can, if desired, be inserted into position between the razor blade 'l5 an'dthe' cap IB for holding both of the cutting edges -of the blade in shaving position with relation to the --teeth-H of-the guard-I 8. .The plate 22is provided on its longitudinal center with an aperture :23 for passing the threaded shank [9 of the cap '18. Extending in :opposite directions ffrom the vaperture :23, the plate 22 has slots .24 Y for.. passing Tithe aribs-Zl oi the cap 1-8.
When the auxiliary plate 22 is inpositionLbetween the razor blade -I 5 and ithe capllfl .its one longitudinal edge will--be flush with :the longitudinal edge of the wide portion 18 of lthecap 48 50 as "to hold the .respective cutting :edge of the blade in :rigid shaving position with relation .to -the teeth ll of theguard. 'f lhe other longitudinal 'edge of the -auxiliary zplate 22 extends beyond the longitudinal edge of thenarrow portion t8 of thecapinto close proximity to the rather J cutting edge of :thez-razor blade. Thus, the other longitudinal-edge :of the plate 22 functions mi-press =the-othercutting edgeof therazor blade 45 into shaving position:-with relation l to the respectiveteeth H of -the=guard |0. However, the auxiliary-platen being-somewhat flexible it .does not hold the other-cutting edge .of the blade l5 as'rigidlyin shaving position as does the gplate 22 and wide portion 18 of the cap hold-the said -one puttin :edge'of the razor-blade in shaving ,iposition. Therefore, with the auxiliary pl-ate 22 =in'posit-ion one edgeoi theblade -i 5.can be-used :for closer shaving than-the other edge.
From the foregoing description, it is apparent that the {present device can be equickly'interchanged so that the edgesofthe double =edged razor :blade are :held :forialternate use-lfor 'shaving and hair trimming :or in which both edges are held in position for shavingaonlysby '4 the simple act of inserting or removing the auxiliary plate 22.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved toall changes and-modifications coming within -the=scope of ithe inventiones defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I .claim asnewandrdesire to secure by United States ihetterslPatentis A device of the class described, comprising a iguardrhavingx teeth along its opposed longitudinal sides and arcenterlaperture, a double edged razor blade rested onsaid guard and having cutting edgeszextended parallel to said teeth, said blade having a center aperture aligned with the center aperture of saidzguardranda cap positioned on :said.blade and having a threaded shankwdepended through said apertures to haveahandle-threaded thereon, said cap having-a wide pontionion 40118 side'of the shank and a narrow ,portion-on ,the other side of said Ishank, :said wide portion having its longitudinal .edge located closely sadja- -cent the respective cuttingzedge-of thefrazor'blade r pressing that cutting edge in shaving position with relation :to the respective teeth-of the guard, said narrow portion having its longitudinaliedge located inward of the respectivecutting:edgenof the :razor 'blade leaving that -:cutting edge :free to assume a hair trimming position awith -mela- -tion to the respective teeth --.of :the -guard, and-:a
