The threads extend through'- the eyerparallel with the blade, so that the handle may be applied in either of two positions, as indicated in Fig. 1, so that the blade vholder yand blade ,may be presented to the face in what might be termed right and left s'idefcutting positions with respect to the handle, as in the case of the old-fashioned axis ofthe handle but crosses it. Between the boss` 13 and the eye 12 is located` a suitable clamping device for'theblade along or for lthe blade and guard,v according to whether the device is used for honing or stropping or for'shaving.v .I l
VThe clamping device' shown in Fig. 1 comprises-fa lever 18 mounted to turnvon a rivet i `lbetween awall 15.01: the boss 13 anda lugv l17 ofthe eye'12,` said lever vhaving aV linger piece 19 and opposed cam lobes 20 and 21, the former having less pitch than the latter and being used for holding the guard and blade in place, as will appear, while the higher lobe 2l is used `for clamping the blade alone, as will be described. From the drawings, it will be seen that the lever may be swung through 180O and when it is at 90 or in midposition it is in release or non-clamping position, as shown in Figs. 7, 8 and 9.
As before suggested, the holder is arranged to receive and iirmly clamp either the blade and guard together or the blade alone, and
the blade and guard will now be described.v
rlhe guard is partially shown in bottom plan in Fig. 1; in top plan in Fig. 2; in section in Fig. 3 and in edge view in Fig. 6. It comprises a main plate portion 22 of substantially the shape of the clamping plate but slight-` ly wider and sli ghtly longer. At its lateral edges it is provided with upwardly extending teats 23 struclr out Jfrom the metal and adapted to register with or enter recesses 82 in the blade ends for alining or positioning the blade and guard, and which teats also ride in guiding recesses 38 along the edges of the backing plate 5 to center the assembled guard and blade in the holder and guide them to place when assembling the parts Jfor use. The orward edge of the guard is made to conform with the tree edge of the clamping member in that it has the same curved shape. It is also provided with a plurality ci notches 24 forming the usual guarding teeth or comb. rlhe guard is also provided at the ends of its comb portion with outwardly extending angular extensions h25, each provided with a corn er guard teat 26 struck up from the metal of the plate at these points and which guard or shield the Jface from the sharp corners of the blade. Within the outer tooth-ed edge the plate is depressed on its blade side to form a groove 27 and within the same is again depressed in the opposite direction to form a ridge 28. lWhen the blade is in place its cutting edge lies just within the free ends of the guard teeth and beyond the groove 27, and the rib 28 is just within the bead 6. Within the rib 28 the guard plate has another rib 29 on its opposite face upon which the edge of the body plate rides as the guard and blade are pushed to home position, its purpose being to slightly flex the blade against the bead 6 ard cause its cutting edge to hug the guard teet i.
rlhe blade comprises a plate 30 having a curved cutting edge 31 and edge recesses 32 adapted to receive the lateral teats 23. It is reversible, face for face. When the blade is assembled upon the guard the two, as an assembly unit, may be inserted in the holder by sli-ding them between the body and backing plates, the teats 23 guiding the parts to position by riding in the recesses 33 of the backing plate. The shoulders at the ends of the recesses 83 provide stops to limit the inner movement of the blade and guard assembly. Then the guard and blade are assembled the outer corners of the blade are protected by the teats 26.
In using the razor, assuming that the blade and guard are in position, the operator may insert the handle in either end of the eye 12 and use it as he sees tit. If he desires the hoe action of the ordinary safety razor he may place the handle in the threaded opening 14. In placing a blade in the razor, the clamping device is moved to the release position and both the blade and guard are drawn out. The new blade is then laid upon the guard plate, the notchesin the sides of `the .blade engaging the teats 23 and the corners of the blade lying behind the teats 26. These parts, forming the blade-guard assembly, may be slid into the holder, whereupon the clamping device is moved to the clamping position shown in Fig. 7, when the razor is assembled and ready for shaving use.
llVhen honing or stropping the blade, the operator places the handle in one of the two positions shown in Fig. 1 and removes the blade and guard assembly. He then replaces the blade alone, as shown in Fig. 4, and moves the clamping device to the second clamping position, shown in Fig. 9, when the blade will be rmly held in place and may be sharpened on a hone, strop or other means.
In the modilied form of holder shown in Fig. 10, the body plate is provided with a clamping screw/35 provided with a rounded nose 36 for engaging the'guard and blade as an assembly, or the blade alone. The screw is also provided with a suitable rigid operating handle 37having a suitable lat linger piece 38. The screw is threaded into an opening which lies between the raised boss 13 and one of the legs 11 ot the eye to which the handle is attached. Its threads are rather coarse pitch so that in a little more than 180 of rotation, which is its limit of movement, it has the necessary longitudinal advance to not only either clamp the blade alone for honing or the blade and guard for shaving, but to also provide a little eXtra motion to compensate for the effect of wear on the end of the screw. ln other words, inthe razor as originally constructed, the blade alone may be lirmly clamped by rotation of the screw to a point short of its limit of movement, and as the end of the screw wears, additional screw rotation is possible within reasonable limits. Rotation of the screw 35 in opposite directions is limited by engagement of the lever 37 or its thumb piece 38 with the boss 13 into which the handle is threaded. T he operating lever 37 therefore lies in a sort of recess, as it were, below the level of the top of the boss 13. In practice the lever is secured to the screw so as to rotate therewith while the screw is threaded into its hole in the body portion.
As a result, it is actually permanently at-1 tached to the razor body and cannot escape therefrom because when rotated in the unscrewing direction, thelever 37 'engages the boss 18 before the threads of the screw leave the threads of the opening into which they are threaded. This'is a very simple construction guard plate 22 is provided with a suitable depression 39 at its back central portion for receiving the rounded nose 36.
This modified type of razor is used in a manner quite similar to the other type in that the assembled guard and vblade may be firmly clamped in place for the shaving operation and the blade alone may be firmly clamped in the holder for sharpening or honing. Nevertheless, as shown in Fig. 10, the device as a whole is quite flat and thin, with no appreciable projections either from the face of its body portion or the face of its backing, which projections otherwise might interfere with honing or stropping. A blade clamped in this holder may be appliedy to a hone ata much sharper or acute angle of inclination.
Having described my invention, I claim:
Vl. A blade holder for safety razors, comprising. a U-shaped frame including a body plate and a backing plate connected by a back bend, the edge of the backing plate projecting beyond the edge of the body plate, and clamping means carried by one of said plates for holding the blade in place, comprising a pivoted lever having camv lobes, one of the lobes having greater. height than the other.
2. A blade holder for safety razors, compiising a U-shaped frame includingv a body plate anda backing plate connected by a back bend, and handle securing means comprising a lug struckout from the back bend, a threaded eye having legs straddling said lug, a threaded handle receiving boss struck outwardly from the center of the bod plate, and a blade clamping device located between said boss and said eye. n
3. A safety razor, comprising a holder of i the U-shaped frame type, including parallel spaced plates separated by a vblade receivinor cavity and connected bya back bend, the bac bend intermediate its ends having an eye extending outwardly and provided with a relatively short opening presenting endwisey and in opposite directions with their common j axis parallel to the planes of said plates two alined handle receiving sockets located near the middle of the back bend, one of said plates at approximately its center having an openlngpresenting 4another handle receiving socket with its axis crossing the general planeofsaid plates. 7 A safety razor, comprising a U-shaped frame including parallel kbody and backing plates connected by a back bend, a guard member and a blade member adapted in superposed relation to be inserted between said plates,one of said members having a recess and the other member a projection, the recessand projection registering to maintain said members in definite relation tok each other, and one of said plates having a recess to receive said projection for locating the assembled blade andv guard members in proper position in the holder.
8. Asafety razor, comprising a holder iii-- a handle receiving opening, a handle therefor, and the other of said plates having recesses to receive said projections to thereby definitely locate the assembled guard and blade relative to thehandle. j
