The present invention relates yto side frames.
More particularly the present invention relates to side frames such as are commonly used in railway car trucks. In constructions in which the side frames are provided with journal boxes integral therewith it is common practice to connect the tension members at the two ends of the side frames to the inner side walls of the journal boxes. In prior constructions, when the side frame is under heavy load avery considerable torque is applied, tending to break the journal boxes away from the side frame..
An object ofthe present invention is to provide an improved side frame in which the pull of the tension member is transmitted along lines such that said pull does not have a great tendency to produce the fracturing effect referred to.
A further object is to provide. a side frame having journal boxes integrally connected thereto in which the forces set up in the tension members when the side frame is under load are transmitted through lines free from abrupt turns,'whereby the fracturing effect of said forces is minimized.
A further object is to provide an improved side frame in which the pull transmitted through the tension member is taken by relatively sturdy parts of the frame which so combine with the structure of the journal Abox that a maximum of strength is provided per unit of material in the side frame.
A further object is to provide a side frame in which the roof of the journal box at each end of said side frame isso shaped that the parts are strengthened and that the machining or grinding of the wedge bearing surface is simplified.
A further object is to provide a side frame having an improved journal box cooperatively associated therewith, which journal box has a maximum of strength per unit weight of material, which simplifies the matter of cleaning the interior of the box after casting, and which also simplifies the finishing of the wedge-engaging surface of said box.
. A further object is to provide a side frame which is sturdy and practical to LAcast and showingr a modication in the tension mem ber and in its connection to the adjacent journal box; j

Referring first to the embodiment of the present invention illustrated in Figures 1, 2, 4 and 6, the numeral 10 indicates the tension member and the numeral 11 indicates the compression member of the side frame of a railway car. Said tension and compression members merge at their extremities and have formed integral therewith the journal box 12. The tension member 10 is preferably U-shaped in cross section, the web 13 of said tension rmember being lowermost in the embodiment shown in Figures 1, 2, 4 and 6. The compression member 11 may also be of U-shaped formation in 'cross section, the web ,141 of said compression member preferably being uppermost. The journal box 12, in accordance with usual practice, extends laterally on both sides of the tension and compression members 10 and 11, the inner portion 15 of said jourvao nal box being provided with the dust guard portion 16. -The forward or outer portion 17 of said journal box 12 is provided with a lid (not shown). The side walls 18H18 of the journal box are formed to provide lugs 19-19 for cooperation with the usual wedge (not shown). From an inspection of Figures 1, 2 and 6 of the drawing, it will be noted that the roof of the journal box is provided with the wedges/engaging portion 20 disposed at a lower level than the adjacent raised side portions 21-21 of said roof. Expressed in other language, the roof of the journal box is formed with the wedge-engaging portion 20 disposed substantially symmetrically with reference to the vertical medial plane of the journal box transversely of the side frame. Flanking said wedge-engaging portion 20 on the two sides thereof are the raised portions 21-21 of the roof, which raised portions are of arch or rib construction, materially strengthening the roof of the journal box. Said arches or ribs 21-21 provide pockets 22-22 on their under sides, whereby the job of finishing the bearing surface of the wedgeengaging portion 20 is simplied.
B'y reference to Figures 2 and 6 it will be noted that the web 13 of the tension member 10 is in coplanar relationship with a portion of the adjacent rib or'arch 21. Expressed in other language, the portion of the rib or arch 21 adjacent to the tension and compression members at each end of the side frame is beveled and constitutes an extension of the web 13 of the adjacent tension member 10, said continuation being preferably in substantially the same plane as said web of the tension member 10. Preferably, the ribs or arches 21-21 extend across the box from the dust guard portion 16 to the outer end of the box, merging with the lid receiving portion of said journal box. -By reason of the fact that the web 13 of the tension member is in alignment with a portion ofthe adjacent rib or arch 21, the intersection of said rib 21 with the journal box is at a higher level than the bearing surface of the wedgeengaging ortion 20 of the box. Moreover, the roof o the journal box at each extremity of the side frame slopes from the apexes of the ribs or arches 21\toward the side walls of the journal'boxes throughout .the length of the journal box from the dust guard 16 to the outer extremity of said journal box. By reason of the fact that the web 13 is a continuation in the same plane as a portion of the adjacent arch or rib 21, `the forces transmitted to the tension member 10 are commusturdy part of the journal box, reducing to a minimum the torque tending to tear the journal box away from -said tension member 10. l
The embodiment of the invention disclosed in Figures 3 and 7 is similarin most respects to those referred to above in connection with Figures 2 and 6. In the embodiment disclosed in Figures 3 and 7 the tension member 10 has its web 23 uppermost. Said web 23 is in coplanar relationship with the adjacent portion of the adjacent rib or arch 2l, whereby stresses transmitted to the tensionmember 10 lare communicated without abrupt bends to a relatively sturdy part of the journal box.
From an inspection of Figure 5 it will be noted that the wedge-engaging portion 20 of the roof is at a lower level than the remainder of the roof inwardly and outwardly of the tension and compression members 10 and 11. Expressed in other language, the wedge-engaging portion 20 has its surface which engages with the usual wedge at a distinctly lower level than the adjacent portions of the roof of the journal box, bordering said wedge-engaging portion both in- Wardly and outwardly and laterally thereof.
Though certain embodiments of the present `invention have been described in detail, many modifications will occur to those skilled in the art. It is intended to cover all such modifications that fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed isr 1. In combination, a side frame having tension and compression members, and a journal box integral therewith, a wedge-engaging portion disposed within said journal box, the roof of said journal box inwardly and outwardly of said tension and compres,
sion members and on the two opposite sides of said wedge-engaging portion being at a higher level than said wedge-engaging p0rtion.
2. In combination, a side frame and a journal box integral therewithsaid journal boxhaving a wedge-engaging bearing disposed intermediate of its length, said bearing being disposed materially below the adjacent portions of the roof of said box at the two ends of said box and at the two sides of said box.
3. In combination, a side frame and a journal box integral therewith, said journal box being provided adjacent to the roof thereof with a wedge-engaging bearing, the roof of said boX at the two sides of said Wedge-engaging bearing being ribbed, said side frame' including a tension member U- shaped in cross section, the web of said tension member lying in substantially the same plane as the adjacent part of the adjai cent ribbed vportion of the roof of said box.
4. In combination, a side frame and a journal box integral therewith, said journal box being provided adjacent to the roof thereof with a wedge-engaging bearing, said bearing being at a-materially lower level than the adjoining portions of the roof of said box, said side frame including a tension member U-shaped in cross section, said roof being provided with a rib disposed laterally of said bearing adjacent to said tension member, the web of said tension member and the adjacent part of said rib lying in substantially the same plane.
5. In combination, aside frame and a journal box -integral therewith,'said ournal box being provided adjacent to the roof thereof with a wedge-engaging bearing', said beari-ng being at a substantially lower level than the adjoining portions of the roof of said box, said side frame including a tension member U-shaped in cross section, the side portions of the roof of said box being ribbed,

In combination, a side frame and a journal box integral therewith, said journal box being provided adjacent to the roof thereof with a wedge-engaging bearing, said bearing being at a materially lower level than the adjoining portions of the roof of said box, said side frame including a tension member U-shaped in cross section, the roof of said box at the side thereof adjacent to said tension member being ribbed, the part of said ribbed portion adjacent to said tension member being a continuation of the web of said tension member.
7. A journal box including a wedge-engaging bearing constituting the mid portion of the roof of said journal box, the roof of said journal box in front and in rear of said bearing and on the tWo sides of said bearing being elevated materially above said bearing.
8. A journal box including `a wedge-engaging bearing, the-roof of said journal box in front and in rear of said bearing being elevated materially above said bearing, the portions of said roof laterallyv of said bearing being ribbed. v
9. A journal box including a wedge-engaging bearing, theroof of said journal box in front and 1n rear of said bearing being elevated materially above said bearing, the roof of said box laterally of said bearing being ribbed at levels above said bearing.

In combination, a side frame and a journal box integral therewith,Q said journal box being provided with a wedge-engaging bearing adjacent to the roof thereof, the adjacent portions of the roof of said journal box in front and in rear ofsaid bearing being elevated materially above said bearing, the top portions of said box laterally of said bearing being ribbed, and a tension member including a web, a part of the ribbed portion of said box adjacent to said tension member being a continuation of the web of said tension member.

In combination, a side frame and a journal box integral therewith, said journal box being provided adjacent to the roof thereof with a wedge-engaging bearing, said bearof with a wedge-engaging bearing, said bearing being at a materially lower level than the adjoining portions of the roof of said box, said side frame including a tension member having a web, the roof of said box at the side thereof adjacent to said tension member being ribbed, the part of said ribbed portion adjacent to said tension member being a conv tinuation ofthe web of said tension member.
