This invention relates to a structurally and functionally improved lock.
vIt is an object of the invention to provide a device of this type in which it will be 5 virtually impossible to force the bolt.
A further object ofthe invention is that of constructing a lock in which, if a retract-` ing strain is exerted upon the bolt by an implement such as a jimmy, such strain will not 1o be transmitted to the lock-operating mechanism, resulting in its disruption or being distorted, the lock mechanism, according to the v present invention, being free from such strain.
A still further object is that of furnishing a lock ofthis type the parts of which will be individually rugged and simple in construction and few in number, and capable of ready assemblage to provide a lock operating fover'long periods Vof timeV with freedom from mechanical difficulty.
Other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and will in part appear hereinafter. Y j
The invention accordingly comprises the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will bev exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the claims.
For a 'fuller understanding of the nature and objects of the invention Vreference should be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
' Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lock embodying one form of construction within the terms of the present invention and showing the bolt partially projected;
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken along lines 2-2 and in the direction of the arrows of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the bolt wholly projected, and, furthermore, showing certain of the parts broken away to disclose underlying construction;
Fig. 1 is a sectional view of the interior of the forward portion of the lock lcasing and showing in dotted lines the position of the parts of the lock mechanism; and
Fig. 5 is aplan view of the bolt.
In these views the reference numeral' 5 n'- dicates a lock casing, which may be formed with outstanding lugs .6,/andthese lugs, as well as the body of thecasing, are provided with openings 7 for the passageof the screws which secure the lock to the closure member, andthe forward end of this casing being formed with a slot through `which the bolt hereinafter described is projected.
It will be understood that the inner `open casing face is normally closed by means of a plate 8 retained in position by screws. (not shown), which pass into the threaded openings of inwardly-extending lugs 9 forming an rotatablymounted by the casing and is connectedwitha crank arm 11 extending interiorly of the same, it being appreciatedthat a cylinder, by means of a suitable tail-piece (neither of which 'is shown), may be con-V nected witha crank or turn-over 12 to actufitte, by means of a key, the mechanism of the ock.
Slidably mounted within the case 5 is a bolt which in the present instance presents a notched' outer end-portion 13,0ne leg of which hasa bore 14 forthe slidable reception of a pin orfbolt body 15, the opposite legheing formed` with a recess 16 to receive-the end of this bolt, the length of this element being such that, as in Fig. 3, `it may have its ends. extending one into each ofthe recesses 14.-16, its body bridging the `space extant between the arms of the bolt 13. Furthermore, as will be apparent in Figs. 3 and 5, the upper portion of the bolt 13 is slit longitudinally as at 17 so as to provide space for the slidable accommodation of aflat arm 18, the outer integral portion` of the casing 5. `Furtherj more, a knob 10 of any suitable shape-is end ofwhich is reduced as at 19 and extends y into a transverse recess 2O formed in the upper end of the bolt 15.
The rear end of the bolt 13 is reduced and terminatesin the present exemplification in a comparatively fiat plate-portion 21 and a rearwardly-extendin j arm 22, which has slidable bearing with a utments 23 forming a part `of the lock casing. The arm 22 pivotally mountsj-as at 24-the inner end of the arm 18, and at this time it will be noted that the outer end of the crank 11 is secured to one end of a bell-crank lever 25, the body of which is pivotally secured as at 26 to the plate 21, and the upper end of which carries a pin 27. Having one of its ends bearing against this pin is a spring 28, the body of which is coiled around the pin forming the pivot 26, and the opposite end of which rides within a groove 29 formed in the rear face of the bolt proper. The pin 27 bears within an offset slotk 30 formed in the arm 18, and the latter carries a pin 31 in line with and extending through a slot 32 formed in the body-1 of the plate 2l; it being apparent that the size of the pin-31 is such that the arm 18 may swing-freely -within the limits imposed by this construction without the pin 31 binding against the side walls of theV slot. As in Fig. 4it will be observed that the casing 5 is formed with an inwardly-extending abutment 33 to the rear of the plate-portion 21, and this casing'may have arecess 34 in its inner face immediately adjacent and above the upper edge of the lug 33. In this ligure,
as well as in Fig. 2, it will be seen that a block 35 is secured to the inner end of the pin 31 and may conveniently move transversely of the bolt 13 by being mounted within a track provided, in the present instance, by a groove 36 in the rear face of the plate 21; it being obvious that as the arm 18 is swuno to move the pin or bolt 15, t-he block 35 will be moved along this track to occupy' a position either in advance of the forward edge of the abutment 33 or to the rear of the rear edge thereof.
The assembly of the vparts will be obvious, it being appreciated that after the pin or bolt 15 has been disposed within the bore or recess 14, and the reduced end 19 of the arm 18 has been eXtendedwithin the recess 20 of this bolt, the outer end of the bore 14 is preferably closed by a plug 37. With the parts thus arranged, and referring particularly to Fig. 3, it will be apparent that if the crank 11 is turned by means of the knob 10, or if the crank 12 is rocked by means of a key to enter and engage the interrupted circular flange 38 at the inner end of the bell-crank lever 25, such lever will be rocked and a pull will be exerted thereon, resulting in a rocking of the upper end of the bell-crank lever against the resistance offered by the spring 28 and an upward movement of the arm 18. rlhis action of the parts obviously will result in the pin or bolt 15 being retracted within the bore 14 and the block 35 moving from a position beyond the forward edge of the lug 33to a position clearing the same, all of which has been shown in Fig. 1. At this time it will be understood tha therocking of the arm 18 follows from a shifting of the bellvcrank lever 25, incident to thefact that the slot 30, as aforesaid, is offset and the pin 27 carried by the bell-crank lever rides within abutment 33 and to wholly retract the pin or bolt 15, subsequently to which the continued movement of the parts will cause the projection of the bolt 13 until it reaches the position shown in Fig. 1, whereupon a final movement of the lock (mechanism, will result in the parts shifting to the position shown in Fig. 3. y
Thus, among others, the objects of this invention have been accomplished, and since certain changes may be made in the above construction, and different embodiments of the invention could be made, without departing from the scope thereof,`it is intended that allk matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the following claims are intended to cover all of t-he generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention Vwhich as a matter of language might be said to fall therebetween.
Having described myy invention, what I claim as-new and desire'to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A lock, including a bolt formed with a slit, an arm movably mounted by said bolt Y connected with said arm to be moved thereby,
said means cooperating with said casing to prevent a forcible retraction of said firstnamed bolt.
2. A lock, including a casing formed with an opening, a bolt slidably mounted by said casing, a bell-crank lever having its Vbody pivotally mounted by said bolt, an arm connected with one of the legs of the bell-crank lever and to be moved thereby, a second bolt connected with said arm and carried by said first-named bolt, and means connected with the second leg' of the bell-crank lever for projecting and retracting said first-named bolt and shifting said arm to move said second bolt with respect to theA first-named bolt. n y
3. A lock, including a bolt formed with a `connect-ed to the second slit and a bore, a second bolt movably mounted in said bore, an arm movably mounted by said first-named bolt and extending through said slit and being connected With said second bolt, a bell-crank lever pivotally supported by said first-named bolt and having one of its legs connected With said boltactuating arm toshift the same, and means leg of the bell-crank lever for rocking and retracting said first-named bolt.
4. A lock, including a casing formed With an opening, a bolt movable through said opening and formed With a slit and bore, a second bolt mounted Within said bore, an arm `movably carried Vby said first-named bolt and extending through said slit and connected With said second bolt, a lug slidably carried by said first named bolt, an abutment forming a part of the casing and disposed adjacent the path of travel of said lug, means connecting said lug with said arm to be moved thereby to a position in advance of and adjacent said abutment to prevent a forcible retraction of said first-named bolt,
a bell-crank lever roclringly mounted by said first-named bolt and connected With said arm to shift the same, and means connected with said bell-crank lever for rocking the same and projecting and retracting said firstnamed bolt.
5. A lock, including a bolt head formed with a groove in its rear edge, alever connectedwith said head to shift the same, means for rocking said lever, and a spring connected With said lever and having its end riding vvvithin said groove.

A lock including a casing formed With an opening, a bolt movable through said opening, a second bolt movable With respect to said `first named bolt and carried thereby, a single member connected to both of said bolts to shift the same, and means connected With said second bolt to move therewith and cooperating with said casing to prevent a retraction of said iirst named bolt When both of said'boltsV are projected.
7. A lock including a casing formed with an opening, a bolt movable through said opening, a second bolt movably carried by said first named bolt, an arm carried by said first named bolt and connected to said second bolt to move the same, a lever connected to said first named bolt, means for shifting said lever and means connecting said arm and said lever to move the former and said second bolt as said arm is moved.
