AUTOMOBILE LOCK MEANS.
Application led August4, 1926. Serial No. 127,084.
This invention relates to improvements in lock means for automobiles, one object of the invention being to provide simple and eiicient means operable by a single key toppen and close the ignition circuit and slmultaneously operate locking means for the clutch control means,
With this and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.

A frame or casing 1 is suitably secured to the instrument board 2 of an automobile and has secured therein, a plate 3 against which a slide bracket 4 is vertically movable. A rod 5 connects the slide bracket with a spring-controlled locking bar or bolt 6 which is adapted to have locking relation with the clutch control means. In the drawing, the locking bar is shown as being adapted to engage a flat face 7 on a trunnion 8 of the clutch yoke when the foot pedal shown at 9 is depressed to disengage the clutch.
A circuit breaker 10 is mounted in the frame or casing 1 and comprises a movable member 11 and contacts 12 fixed to the frame or casing and electrically connected with binding posts 13 which receive conductors 14 forming parts of the ignition circuit. The movable member 11 of the circuit breaker is carried by one arm of a lever 15 which is pivoted at 16 and the other arm of said lever is provided with a nger 17 for a purpose lever 15, so that when the key 21 is inserted into the lock as shown in Figure 1, the long pin 21El will be projected and caused to 0perate the lever 15 to close the circuit breaker. A spring-pressedpin or plunger 22 engages the circuit breaker lever and tends normally to open said circuit breaker, so that when the key is removed from the lock, the circuit breaker will be forced open as illustrated in Figure 2.
The plug or barrel of the cylinder lock is provided with a finger 23 which'l enters a slot in a link 24, the latter being connected with said finger by a pivot pin 25. Connected With the end of the link 24, by means of a pivot pin 26 disposed at right angles to the pivot pin 25, is one end portion of a link 27, the other end portion of which loosely enters an opening in the hub 28 of a rollback 29. The hub 28 is mounted to turn in a suitable opening in the plate 3 and the rollback carries a in 30 which enters a cam slot 31 in the sllde bracket 4. The links 24 and 27 constitute in efect, a universal coupling between the plug or barrel of the lock and the hub of the roll back, so that when said plug or barrel is turned in one direction, the roll back will move from the position shown in Figures 1 and 3, in which the rollback pin is shown directly under the axis of the hub 28, to the position shown in Figure 4, in which the roll-back pin is shown directly over the axis of said hub. During such movements of the roll-back, the locking bar 6 will be raised out of locking relation to the clutch control means, and it is evident that movement of the roll-back from thel position shown in Figure 4 to the position shown in Figures 1 and 3, will cause the locking bar to be moved into locked relation to the clutch control means.
When the key is not in the lock, the circuit breaker will be open as shown in Figure 2 and the clutch control means will be locked, as shown in Figure 1. 10
Under normal working conditions, the key will be locked in the plug or barrel of the lock by engagement therewith of the set of pin tumblers 32 carried by the plug or barrel 19, the spring-pressed tumblers 33 and the 105 long pin 21L resting against the back of the key. Should the key now be given a half turn, the plug or barrel will be turned a like distance, the pins 32 will be brought to alignment with the pins 33 and 21a and the 11o circuit breaker will remain closed, but such turning of the plug or barrel of the lock has caused motion to be transmitted to the slide bracket 4 and to the locking bar 6 to move the latter into locked relation to the clutch control means after the clutch shall have been disengaged by pressure on the pedal 9. The key may now be removed from the lock and after it has been removed, the springpressed plunger 22 will be free to force the circuit breaker to open position as shown in Figure 2. The ignition circuit is now yopen and the clutch control means are locked.
KTo restore the mechanism to normal working or operative conditions, the key will first be inserted into the lock as shown in Figure l to close the circuit breaker through the medium of the long pin 21a. The key may now be turned to turn the lock plug or barrel and transmit motion, through the universal coupling, roll-back, slide bracket and connect-ing rod, to the locking bar 6 to withdraw the latter from locked relation to the clutch control means. The key, lock and cooperating parts will now be in the position shown in Figure 4, and the automobile will be in normal working condition.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In lock means for automoblies, the combination with a circuit breaker lor the ignition circuit, and a locking member for the clutch control means, of key-controlled means including a rotatable member, a pin operable by said means to move the movable member of the circuit breaker to closed position, means for moving said movable member to open position, a slide bracket, connections between said slide bracket and said locking member, a roll-back eooperable With the means.
2. In lock means for automobiles, the combination with a circuit breaker including a pivoted member, of a key-controlled mechanism, a pin operable by said mechanism and bearing against the movable member of the circuit breaker at one side of the ivot thereof to move said member in one irection, and an element engaged with the movable member at the opposite side of its pivot for moving the movable member of the circuit breaker in the reverse direction.
3. In lock means for automobiles, the combination of a key-controlled mechanism, a pin operlblc by said mechanism, a circuit breaker including a movable member and fixed contacts, a pivoted lever carrying the movable member of the circuit breaker and having a part engaged by said pin 'to close the circuit breaker, and for opening the circuit brcaker a pusher engaging the lever in opposition to the pin.
4. In lock means for automobiles, the combintaion With a circuit breaker, and a locking member for the clutch control means, of keycontrolled means including a rotatable member, means operatively coupling said rotatable member With said locking member, a pin in constant engagement With the movable element of the circuit breaker' and operable by the key-controlled mechanism to close the circuit-breaker, and means constantly engaging the movable clement of the circuit breaker to open the circuit breaker.
