DOOR HOLDING DEVICE Filed Aug. 25, 1928 a 3mm Bin/r J Hak m i Patented June 1 31930 ars.
FRANK J. YACHYRA, on roar cnns'rnn, NEW YORK DOOR-HOLDING V nnvrcn 1 Application filed August 25, 1928. Serial No. 302,079.
Thisinvention relates to closure holding devices and pertains-particularly to a holder 7 for maintaining doors in open POSltlOIl;
l The present invention is primarily designed for use in connection with doors of the character used upon garages, barns or like structures, where it is frequently necessary to secure the. doors in open position while, passing through the door opening.
, 1c The primary object, therefore, is to provide a door holder which will assume its operative position automatically when the door to which it is attached is swung to the desired open position and act to maintain the same I in this position until-released.
I A further object of the invention is to provide a door holder device of the character described which will be of simple construc tion, easy to manipulate, strong and durable .2 and readilymoiintedin po-sitionfor use.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the follow ng detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, with the understand ng,
however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawing but may be changed or modi fiedso long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
- In: the drawing I Figure 1 is atop plan view of the, door brace embodying the present invention,
showing one end thereofattached to a door structure; l Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the same;
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail view of the keeper and free ends of the bars associated therewith; Figured is a sectional view taken upon the line 44: of Figure l;
Figure 5 is'a sectional view taken upon the line 55 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates generally a building of the character of a garage or the like having the usual door opening 2 therethi'ough, and a door 3 is hingedly mounted at one sideof the opening.
The door holding device embodying the present invention comprises a bracket mem ber 4E designed to be securedto the inner.
face of the door "adjacent the topfedge thereof, this bracket having the forwardly projecting flange portion 5 to which is piv'ot- V ally attachedas at 6 one end of an angle bar 7. Asshown, the angle bar isso mounted that-one side thereof is normally horizontally arranged while the-other side or flangeis-vertically arranged. 4
The vertical side of the angle bar? is notched at the under edge'and adjacent the opening (not shown),the web portion 12-de- 7L pending therefrom." and having formed therethrough a substantially 'T-shaped slot 13. The free end of the bar; 7 extends through the slot 13, the horizontal portion thereof slidably extending throughthe shank portion of the same whilethevertical n portion ofthefbar extends into one arm of, i the slot, the lower edge'of the verticalpor- "tionj-of the bar'sliding acrossthelowermost edgeof the same in the manner shown. I I i 8.5?
From the description thusfar given {it will be readily-.seen that with the keeper bracket mounted obliquely-with respect'tothe length of'the door fram'emember, when the door 3 is swung outwardly, the bar7 991 will be drawn out also through the slot :13, After swinging the 'door a predetermined distance the-notch- 8 formed in the verti cal portionof thebar fwill-rjeceive' thelower edge of the downwardly directedarmof the slot and thus'stopg'furtheroutward move;
. ment of the bar.
In order to prevent the swinging to of the door 3, before the desired time, there is: mounted longitudinally of the outer face of the horizontal. portion of the bar 7, a
latch bar 1 1. This bar is of substantially the same length as the bar 7 and is pivotally secured thereto adjacent the outer end as indicated at 15. At its inner end the latch bar is cut away to form the extended finger portion 16 and the shoulder 17.
The shoulder 17 is spaced a slight distance inwardly from the deepest portion of the notch 8, as shown, and from this it will be readily understood that when. the bar 7 is drawn outwardly, the latch bar 14, which slides on edge through the wider or head part of the slot 13, will move with it. \Vhen the notch 8 has dropped over the lower edge of the slot 18 in the manner described, the
shoulder 17 will drop'to position against the outer face of the portion 12 of the keeper bracket and thus prevent return movement of the bar 7.
Release of the latch bar l l is accomplished by pulling downwardly upon the outer end thereof, there being provided for this pur pose a depending chain 18, which is attached to the outer end in the manner shown.
From the foregoing description it will be readily understoodthat the herein described door holder will operate smoothly and positively to secure the doorto which it is attached in open position and at the same time it will also be seen that release of the holder can be easily and quickly accomplished for the closing of the door.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is i 1. A door holder comprising a bar mem-' ber, means for pivotally securing one 'end of the bar to a door, said bar having a notch formed therein adjacent the other endthereof, a keeper designed to be fixed at a point adjacent the door and adapted to slidably receive said bar, and' a latch member shifts ably carried by the bar, and coacting with the notch thereof for securing the bar to the keeper after the bar has been drawn a predetermined distance therethrough in the opening of the door.
2. A door holder of the character described, comprisingan anglebar member,
; ing a bracket having a depending slotted portion adapted to slidably receive said bar,
said bracket being designed to be fixedly secured at a point adjacent the door, one edge of said bar slidingover an edge of said slot being provided with a notch for engagement therewith to limit the movement of the bar,
and a latch bar pivotally secured to andeX-L tending longitudinally of the first-mentioned bar to move in said. slot having a reduced shoulder portion automatically coacting with said'notch to secure the door in an open position. 7 i
3.. A door holder, comprising a bar memrkeeper opposite the side ber adapted to be pivotally secured at one end to a door and having a notch cut in the under face adjacent the other end, said notch having a right angularly disposed wall and a relatively long curved wall remote from the free end of the bar, a keeper adapted to be fixed adjacent the door and having an aperture to receive the bar, said notch receiving the lower edge of the aperture upon the shifting of the bar a predetermined distance in the opening of the door, and a latch bar pivotally attached to the first bar and adapted to slide therewith through the aperture and coacting at its forward end with the first mentioned wall of the notch by engaging said end against a side of the adjacent the first mentioned wall.
4 A door holder, comprising an angled brace bar, adapted-to have one end pivotally attached to a door with one side thereof directed downwardly, said downwardly directed side adjacent the free end of the bar having a notch cut therein, said notch having one wall extending transversely of the bar and a relatively long curved wall extending from the inner end of the first wall toward the pivoted end of the bar and to the free edge of the depending portion, a keeper comprising a base adapted to be fixed adjacent the door and a depending portion having an aperture therethrough designed to receive the brace bar, said notch receiving the lower edge of said aperture at a predeterminedposition of'the door, and a latch bar pivotally secured to the depending portion of the brace bar and having one end arranged inwardly of the first mentioned wall of the notch to coact therewith for the receptionand holding of the keeper plate in the 1 signature.
