WITNEEEEE: INVENT /Qfwv UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN L. RITER., OF BROWNSVILLE, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,408, dated April 18, 1876 application iiled August 26, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. RITEE, of Brownsville, Union county, Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Bed-Bottoms, ot' Which the following isa specification, reference being had to the drawings.
Figure l is a plan View of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section. Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 are detail views.
A represents the sides of the frame of the bed-bottom, and B the slats. These slats are supported at their centers by suitable springs O, which rest upon the cross-bar P. In one of the ends of each slat is cut a slot, S, down through which passes a pin, rod, or screw, R, from the top cross-bar U1 into the cross-bar U2, there being a washer, V, of suitable material, placed upon oneor both sides of the slat between the cross-bars, so that the endwise movement of the slat will make no noise. Instead of the slot S, a gain, a, may be cut in one or bo'th edges of the slat, as shown in Fig. 3, and the cross-bar'act as a stop to its endWise movement instead of theI bolt or pin R. `Instead of the Washers V being made in two independent pieces, a single Washer, b, formed as shown in Fig. 4, may be used, this Washer being passed up through the slot so that the striking of the bolt or pin against the ends of the slot may make no noise. It' so desired, the top cross-piece C may be entirely dispensed with.
By means of the slots or gains in the slats, when the slats are compressed they move end- Wise until the springs O have been compressed suftioiently, when the end of the slot or gain strikes against the bolt or cross-bar, and thereby relieves the springs of all further strain. The springs O may be of any desired construction, and are placed under the center of each slat in preference to the ends, so that it cannot sag down at that point where the greatest strain comes.
Attached to this bottom is a suitable headpiece, consisting of the side-bars E Ef, crossbarsH L, strips of webbing D, and catches or props.
Having thus described my invention, l claim- In a bed-bottom, the combination of the slats B, having the slot S, Washers V, crossbars, and bolt, pin, or screw R, substantially as shown and described.
That I claim the improvements in bed-bottoms shown in the annexed specifications and drawings, I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day of August, A. D. 1875.
JOHN L. RITER.
