Description

L LT E N .0 WV A B S Patented April18, 1876.
No.176,ZZ5.
ATTBRHEYS.
N-PEI'ERS, PNOTO-LITHOGRAFHER. WASHINGTDN. 11C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SAMUEL W. HILL, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVAEIA.
IMPROVEMENT m BAYONETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,225, dated April 18, 1876; application filed I February 28, 1876. i
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. HILL, of Pittsburg, Allegheny county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Combined Ramrod and Ba onet, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a ramrod and bayonet combined in one device, and so construct ed that it serves for both purposes equally as well as the ordinary ramrod and bayonet do their respective purposes.
Figure l is partly a side elevation and partly a sectional elevation of a gun with my improved combined ramrod and bayonet, showing the instrument disposed in the gun-stock for carrying. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, with a part in section, showing the fixed bayonet. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line as .00, Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a section on line y 3 Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is a section on line a z. I
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the combined ramrod and bayonet, the same being a rod of steel of sufficient length for a ramrod, and of sufficient thickness to afford the strength required for a bayonet, and preferably in triangular shape, with fluted sides, except a short section of the butt, and which is made round for the head B and the neck D, in which is a slot, E, fora spring-catch, F, to engage it and prevent it from being pulled out of the stock when used as a bayonet, said catch being located at or about the middle band G, where there is a strong tube, H, for confining the rod so that it cannot escape from the catch. This tube has a triangular hole, I, in the bottom, to let the bayonet pass, as in Fig. 1. The long rod, thus extending into the stock beyond the middle band G, projects far enough for a bayonet, and is supported sutficiently at the same time for such use.
The spring-catch may be varied at the pleasure of the maker, or any other approved fastening may be substituted for it.
Having th us described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the recessed stock,
of the slotted rod-A, correspondingly slotted tube H, the spring-catch F, and the band G, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
SAML. W. HILL.
