Description

C. H. TIBBETTS.
AXLELUBRICATOR.
No. 176,097. Patented April 11, 1876.
/KITJV'ESSES UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE,
CHARLES Hi TIBBETTS, OF HOULTON, MAINE.
' IMPROVEMENT IN AXLE-LUBRICATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,097, dated April 11, 1876; application filed December 23, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, O. H. TIBBETTS. of Houlton, in the county of Aroostook and in the State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Lubricating Axles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accom pan yin g drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a lubricating device for vehicle-axles, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, 1 will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, which represents a longitudinal section of a wagon or carriage axle embodying my invention.
A represents the axle, fastened to the bedpiece B by means of clips 0 O, in the usual manner. Under the outer clip 0 is a hole, a, bored through the bed-piece and intothe axle until it meets and communicates with the in ner end of a hole, b, bored longitudinally from the outer end inward through the center of the axle. The outer clip (3 is attached to an oil-cup, D, which thus rests on the top at the outer end of the bed-piece B, and has an opening in its bottom corresponding with the hole a. Through the bottom of the oil-cup is screwed a hollow screw, E, which extends downward to near the lower end of the hole a, andunder the head of said screw is placed a washer, d, to make the joint perfectly oiltight. h is a wick, passed through the hollow screw E and through the hole I) to near the outer end thereof. In the outer end of the hole I) is a screw, 2', stopping the same, and preventing the oil from escaping. On top of the oil-cup D is a cap,- G, provided on the under side with two concentric flanges, m and a, the inner one, m, of which has exterior screwthreads to screw into the upper end of the cup, and the outer flange, n, fits around the outside thereof. In this cap is an air-vent, m, as shown.
The oil passes through the wick h the entire length of the hole I), and allows sufficient quantity to escape through small holes I) in the bottom of the axle, so as to form a seltlubricator for the axle.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The hollow screw E, provided with a head, in combination with the oil-cup D, washer d, perforated axle A, wick h, and oil-passage b, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 1st day of November, 1875.
