(No Model.) v
H. G. FARR.
AXLE LUBRICATOR. No. 338,052. Patented Mar. 16, 1886.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.'
HIRAM G. FARR, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
AXLE-LUBRICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,052, dated March 16. 1886.
Application filed August 31, 1885. Serial No. 175,599. No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, HIRAM G. FARR, of Boston, inthe county vof Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Lubricating Axles for Vehicles, of which the following is a fullfclear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompany] ng drawings, making part of this specication, in which- Figure 1 is a plan of the upper side of the journal of an axle constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the center` of the same; Fig. 3, a similar section with the axle box in place upon the axle. Fig. 4 is a view of the same. Fig. 5 is a transverse section on the line x x of Fig. 3. Fig. 6 represents one form of wick for feeding the lubricant to the outside of the axle-journal; Fig. 7, another form of wick for feeding the lubricant. Fig. 8 represents an axle having a single collar, instead of two, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4; Fig. 9, a transverse section through a collar.
In the said drawings, A represents the j ournal of a non-revolving axle, having a longitudinal channel, a, cut in its upper side, for the receptionof a lubricant and a strip of felt or other suitable material, which serves as a wick, b, for feeding the lubricant upward. The ends of the channel are slightly rounded, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and the length and shape of the wick may exactly or nearly correspond with that of the channel a, Fig. 6, or may have its under side corrugated, Fig. 7, the straight edge of the wick being uppermost when located within the channel. Surrounding the inner end of the journal are two collars, c c, Figs. l, 2, and 3, with a short space intervening between them. In each collar (which is formed in the upper side of the journal) `is cut a notch, d, the form of the outer notch being rectangular, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 9, and the notch in the inner collar wedge shape. (See Figs. 2and 3.) Within these notches d al is located a continuous strip of felt or other fibrous material, which is saturated with the lubricant and serves as a wick, e, to lay it upon the inner surface of the enlarged portion of the axle-box B, which surrounds the collars.
over the outer screw-threaded end of the axle.
h is a suitable washer interposed between the outer collar, c, of the journal and the contiguous annular shoulder of the axle-box B,to prevent undue lateral play. The wick e, besides lubricating the interior of the enlarged portion of the axle-box, also performs the office of a dust-arrester, should any be able to penetrate at the annular line of the joint between it and the journal.
Vhen the lubricant and wicks are once applied to the axle, no attention need be given for several months thereto, and a carriage provided with my aforesaid axles can run with perfect ease and freedom from liability of the heating and setting of its wheels incident to axles of the ordinary construction.
The aim of this invention is to reduce to a minimum the friction between the journal of an axle and the box or bearing of a wheel revolving thereon; and my present invention consists in a non-revolving vehicleaxle having at the inner end of its journal one or more collars, each provided with a notchin its upper side for the reception of a wick saturated with alubricant, the journal also having a longitudinal channel formed in its upper side, for the reception of a lubricant and a wick, which feeds it by capillary attraction in proper quantities to the interior of the wheel box or hub revolving thereon,by which construction, after being once oiled, the axle needs no renewal of the lubricant for a considerable period of time.
W'here the journal has but one collar, c, Fig. 8, I prefer to have the notch d wedge shapee., have its bottom taper upward and inward--for the purpose of preventing the wick e from being forced out of its position.
I claiml. A non-revolvingjournal, A, having one or more annular flanges or collars, c, each provided with a notch, d, for the reception of a lubricated wick, e, and with a longitudinal channel, a, for the reception of a lubricant and IOC Wick, b, a threaded outer` end, and a nut, C, Witness 4my hand this 27th day of August, turned thereover, in combination With a re- 1885.
volving aX1e-boX,B,substantia11y as described.
2. In combination with the journal A, prov HIRAM vGr. FARB. 5 vided with a collar, c, having a Wedge shape notch, d, the Wick e, of corresponding shape, In presence ofooated therein, as and for the purposel set N. W. STEARNS,
