Description
May 27, 1930. F. N. YOUNG STAPLE AND NAIL EXTRACTOR Filed Oct. 2, 1926 Patented May 27, 193i) creator PATEN T GFFEQE FREDRICK Iii. YOUNG, OF CLAREMONT, NEW HAMPSHIRE STAPLE AND NAIL EXTRACTOR Application filed October 2, 1926.
The present invention pertains to a novel staple and nail extractor constructed in a simple manner and adapted to accomplish its expected functions as effectively as possible.
The device comprises essentially a housing in which are supported a fixed jaw and a movable aw. The movable aw is formed with a cam face or similar arrangement adapted to be engaged by a handle which is also pivoted in the housing. The aws when opened are placed at opposite sides of the nail 0r staple, and the handle is then swung on its pivotso that the movable jaw closes against the fixed jaw whereby the nailor staple is grasped between the two jaws. Continued pressure on the handle causes the entiredevice to swing about a heel or a bearing piece carried thereby whereupon the nail or staple .s extracted.
The invention comprises further a hammer taple or nail head which cannot otherwise be reached.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following description and in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the staple extractor;
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof in closed position;
Figure 3 is a plan view thereof in grasping position;
Figure is a side elevation of the ext-ractor applied to a staple;
Figure 5 is a sectional view of the handle;
Figure 6 is a perspective view of a nail puller;
Figure 7 is a plan view thereof with one of the plates removed;
.Figure 8 is a section on the line S8 of igure 7; and
Serial No. 139,199.
Figure 9 is a front elevation of the nail extractor. 1
Reference to these views will now be made by use of like characters which are employed. to designate corresponding parts throughout.
The staple extractor shown in Figures 1 to inclusive comprises a hollow housing lhavin a bearing piece or heel 2 projecting from the forward side thereof. Within the housing, near the upper wall thereof is secured a stationary jaw 3 and a pivoted jaw4. The
aws are opposed to one another and held to the top of the housing by screws 5, the stationary jaw being further maintained by a pin 6 which prevents turning. The shank of the swinging jaw 4 is formed with a recess adapted to provide an arcuate cam 7 as clearly shown in Figures 2 and 3. Through the rear wall of the housing is passed a handle 8 which is fastened therein by a pivot pin 9 on which it is adapted to turn. The inner end of the handle is formed with an angular upwardly directed projection 10 formed with a bevelied head designed to engage the cam formed on the swinging jaw 42 and forcibly swing the jaw to closed staple engaging position; The projection 10 is accommodated in a notch 11 cut in the upper wall of the housing. The handle 8 is maintained in a central position with respect to the pin 9 by means of spacing rings 12 surrounding the pin at both sides of the handle.
The handle 8 is surrounded by a heel 13 which is used as a hammer for driving the points of the jaws 3 and at into the wood when the staple is'embedded therein too far to be reached otherwise. In such a case the heel 13 is drawnoutwardly with respect to the handle 8 and then driven forcibly against the handle after the claws have been placed at opposite sides of the staple. The end of the handle is cushioned as at 14: and is also equippedwith 15 held by a pin 16 passed through both the handle and the ring. The forward end of the'heel has a collar 17 threaded therein and adapted to slide loosely on the handle. This collar in conjunction with the ring prevents the heel from being pulled ofl the handle.
The use of the device is illustrated more clearly in Figure at in which is illustrated a post 18 having a staple 19 driven therein. The claws are placed at opposite sides of the staple in such a manner that the handle 8 assumes substantially a horizontal position. The points of the jaws 3 and 4 are driven into the wood if necessary and the handle 8 is then lowered whereupon the point 10 riding against the cam face 7 causes the movable jaw 4 to swing towards the fixed jaw 3 whereby the staple is grasped between the two jaws. The downward pressure of the handle 8 is continued whereby the entire device is caused to swing about the heel 2 as a pivot so that the staple is withdrawn.
The same construction as modified rm a nail puller is illustrated in Figures 6 to 9 inclusive. The housing for this device comprises a pair of plates and 21 secured to gether by screws 22 and having internal flanges 23 so that an interior cavity is formed for accommodating the working parts. A fixed jaw 24 and a swinging jaw 25 project through the forward end of this housing and are maintained in position by bolts 26 which further serve to support a bearing piece 27. The fixed aw 24 is further held by a pin 28 passed through the plates 20 and 21 in order to prevent turning. Theshank 29 of the swinging jaw 25 has in its outer edge a notch 30 which receives one end of a flat spring 31 secured to one of the flanges 23. This spring tends to move the inner end of the jaw 25 towards the fixed jaw 24 and thereby to separate the points of the tWo jaws. The inner edge of the swinging jaw is formed with a recess 32 for receiving a lug 34 on the inner end of a handle 33 pivotally supported between the plates 20 and 21 by a pin 35. The
operation of this device is substantially similiar to that previously described except that in this instance the handle swings in the plane of the jaw rather than in a plane perpendicular thereto.
l/Vhile a specific embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described, it is to be understood that various alterations in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit ofthe invention 3 as indicated by the appended claim.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is An extractor comprising a housing, a fixed jaw secured in the housing and having its outer engaging end projecting longitudinally from one end of the housing, a pivoted jaw mounted in opposed position to the fixed jaw and adapted to adjustably co-act therewith,
and a handle arrangedrearwardly of and contiguously with said movable jaw and extending longitudinally from the opposite end of the housing, said handle being pivoted to said housing for swinging movement in a plane at right angles to the swinging movement of.
hand.
