This invention relates to obstetrical forceps, and the general object of the present invention is to provide improvements on the subject matter of my Patent No. 1,662,169,
issued March 13, 1928, the improvements being in the adjustment means for the blades or jaws of the forceps as shown in this patent.
A further object of the present invention is to provide obstetrical forceps that include 19 novel adjusting means for the blades or jaws thereof, that are operable in an easy and expeditious manner, but are capable of secur ing the blades or jaws in fixed adjusted positions and also includes means for indicating the adjusted positions.
Another object of the present invention is to provide gearing in the adjusting means that is amply protected or guarded.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide obstetrical forceps including the improvements set forth that are simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and extremely efficient in operation and service.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like 01' corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the forceps constructed in accordance with my present invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken approximately on line 33 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the jaws or blades are indicated by the reference numerals l and 2, and these blades are arranged in cooperative relation with respect to each other with pivot means at their inner ends and which pass through openings formed therein as best shown in Figure 3.
The inner ends of the blades or jaws are also provided with teeth and are rounded in a manner to produce segmental gear portions 3.
The shanks in the present invention are indicated by the reference numerals 4 and 5 and having portions thereof disposed between the segmental gear portions 3 of the jaws, the shanks being slidably mounted with respect to each other and adjustable accordingly, and this adjustment is accomplished through the medium of handles 6 which are of like shape and formed with corrugations to provide finger gripping means as will be apparent. The shanks are retained in adjusted position, and for this purpose I provide a headed stud formed with one of said shanks which is adapted to be received in any one of a number of recesses 7 formed in the other shank, and the shanks are fixedly secured in their adjusted position through the instrumentality of a pivoted bolt 8 which is pivotally secured to an arm 9 fixed to the shank having the headed stud thereon, while formed with the other shank is a strip 10 provided with recesses to receive the pivoted bolt 8 which is held in any one of the recesses by a thumb screw 11.
Secured to the inner surface of one of the handles 6 is a stud 12 that is formed to slidably receive and slidably secure an arcuate lever 18 that is held adjustably fixed with respect to the last mentioned handle through the instrumentality of a set screw 14, and connected with the outer end of the, lever 13 is an auxiliary handle 15, the latter handle being connected to the lever by a universal joint 16.
The pivot means for the segmental gear portions for the blades or jaws 1 and 2 are in the form of screw bolts 17 that are provided with bearing portions which have extending therefrom threaded portions threadedly received in threaded openings in the shanks 4 and 5, and the blades or jaws are received by the bearing portions as best shown in Figure 3.
Mounted for slidable movement on the outer surfaces of the shanks 4 and 5 are arms 18 that perform a dual function, and for this purpose one of the ends of the arms 18 are provided with teeth engageable with the teeth of the segmental gear portions 3 whereby upon movement of the arms 18, the jaws 1 and 2 will be moved accordingly. The arms 18 have their opposite ends pointed as at 19, and passing through the shanks 4 and 5 in a manner to be arranged in a substantially arcuate line with each other are a plurality of pins 20 which extend through the shanks upon opposite sides thereof as best shown in Figure 3. These pins 20 cooperatewith the pointed ends of the arms 18 whereby the position of the blades or jaws 1 and 2 can be ascertained, therefore the pins and pointed ends act as an indicator'as will be apparent.
The arms 18 are held in adjusted position by set screws 21 that pass through the arms, and these set screws are provided with pointed ends to be received in indentations 22 formed in the shanks 4 and 5.
The teeth of the segmental gear portions 3,
and the teeth of the arms 18 are covered in a manner to be protected by plates 23, and these plates are held associated with the segmental gear portions by the screw bolts 17, while screw bolts 24; hold the plates associated with the arms 18, and these screw bolts 24: are likewise provided with bearing portions that pivotally receive the arms 18, and threaded portions that are threadedly secured in the shanks 4 and 5. From the above description and disclosure of the drawings, it will be obvious that I have provided obstetrical forceps that have means for adjusting the blades or jaws thereof, which are easily and expeditiously operated for adjusting the blades or jaws, and to positively hold the latter in adjusted positions. The adjusted position of the blades or jaws can be ascertained at a glance by inspecting the position of the pointed ends of'the arms 18, with respect to the pins 20 as above set forth.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
hat I claim is:
1. In obstetrical forceps, jaws included in said forceps, segmental gear portions formed with said jaws, shanks having pivotal connection with said segmental gear portions, handles for said shanks, arms having teeth formed therewith and meshing with the teeth of the segmental gear portions, said arms being movably mounted on said shanks for adjusting the jaws with respect toeach other, means for securing the arms in adjusted positions, and means for indicating the adjusted positions of said jaws.
2. In .obstreti'ical forceps, jaws included in said forceps, segmental gear portions formed with said jaws, shanks pivotally receiving said segmental gear portions, arms mounted for pivotal movement on said shanks, teeth formed with one of the ends of said arms and meshing with the teeth of the segmental gear portions, indicating means carried by said arms and shanks respectively for ascertaining the adjusted position of said j aws, said shanks being slidably mounted with respect to each other, means for securing said shanks in adj usted positions, and handles for said shanks.
3. In obstetrical forceps, jaws included therein, segmental gear portions formed with said jaws, shanks pivotally secured to said segmental gear portions, arms mounted for pivotal movement on said shanks and provided with teeth meshing with the teeth of the segmental gear portions for adjusting the jaws, plates covering the teeth of the arms and the segmental gear portions, set screws carried by said-arms and cooperating with indentations formed in the shanks for holding the arms in adjusted positions, means for indicating the position of said arms whereby the position of the jaws can be ascertained, means for adjusting the shanks with respect to each other, and handles for said shanks.
4. In obstetrical forceps, jaws included therein, segmental gear portions formed with said jaws, shanks having segmental gear portions pivotally secured-thereto, arms pivotally secured to said shanks, teeth formed with said arms and meshing with the teeth of the segmental gear portions, said arms having one of their ends pointed, pins passing through the shanks and extending from opposite sides thereof for cooperation with the pointed ends to provide an indicating means to ascertain the position of said jaws with respect to each other, set screws carried by said arms and having pointed ends engageable in indentations formed in said shanks for holding the jaws in adjusted positions, plates covering the teeth of the segmental gear portions and arms respectively, and handles for said shanks.
