Description

W. H. CAMERON. TOQL. APPLICATION FILED AN.13, I921- Patented July 11,1922.
WILLIAM: H. CAIVIERON, OI? PITTSBURGH,
PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO RADIUM:
CHEMICAL COMPANY, 0F PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOOL.
Application filed January 13, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VWILLIAM H. CAMERON. a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in tools and more particularly to those of the pivoted lever or forceps variety one object of the invention being to so construct a tool that it shall be especially adapted for use in handling small tubes or applicators containing radium salt or compound, and to construct the device in such manner that the radium tubes or applicators may'readily be picked up and firmly gripped and handled with safety.
lVith this and other objects in view. the invention consists in certain novel features as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure .l is a view of a tool illustrating an embodiment of my invention, and Figure 2 is a detail view.
Radium applicators of the tube variety are usually made of metal and are quite small in size. It is necessary that these applicators be handled very carefully and in manner to safeguard not only the patient but also the operator. The purpose of my in vention is to provide a device whereby these small radium applicators may be easily picked up and firmly held to facilitate han dling and to avoid necessity for the operator to take them in his fingers.
My improved device is of the forceps variety comprising two levers l2 pivotally connected together at 3, formin jaw portins l5 and comparatively long nandle portions 67 having thumb and finger loops Specification of Letters .Eatent.
Patented July M, 1322.
Serial No. 436,988.
1. end of the jaw 5 and the out r face portion f said finger may be rounded. Each of said jaws f and 5 are provided with pans which may consist of rubber tubes ].212.
In using the device the lower end of the jaw 5 may be placed on the support on which the radium tube may be located and then, by closing the jaws, the finger 11 will be slipped under the tube or applicator and the latter may then be firmly gripped be tween the rubber covered jaws and the levers of the device may be latched together to prevent possibili of accidental escape or displacement of the tube or applicator. The de ice thus pcri'nits the tube or applicator to be securely gripped and easily and safely handled or n'ianipulated.
l l ing" fully described my in vcntion what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is: i
l. A tool for handling surgical tubes. (0111 prising relatively movable padded jaws, one of said jaws provided with a finger disposed in the plane of said jaw and at substantially right angles thereto. said finger adapted to project beyond the free end of the other jaw, and means whereby said jaws may be relatively moved.
D11: g relati lane of 1 posed in tie plane of L stantially right angles theretm said finger having a rounded outer face portion and adapted to project beyond the free end of the other aw. and means whereby said jaws may be relatively moved.
ln testimony whereoh l have signed this specification.
