Description

y21119a0. G. w. MILLER A 1,160,428
COMBINATION AWNING AND SHADE Filed Jun 24, 1927 Patented May 27, 1930 UNITE sA'res enonen w. MILLER, or oKLAHoMA PATENT OF COMBINATION AWNING AND SHADE Application filed June 24,
This invention relates to new and useful improvement of combination awning and shade for use upon automobiles and the like for protecting the occupants from the sun and rain. The object of this invention is the provision of a suitable ratchet arm adjustably mounted upon the-lower end of a fiat plate and a spring actuated awning operatively attached to the upper end of said plate distant from the ratchet arm, so that the tension of the spring actuated awning urges the ratchet into engagement through the medium of the spring actuated awning having its free end attached to the bail, and bail to i ratchet arm. Another object is the urging of Fig. 2.
- Fig. 4: is a detail view of the bail which holds the outer edge of the awning, the inner ends of which form a part of the ratchet locking means. At 1 and 1 are shown the jambs of the opening on which the flat plates 2 and 3 are mounted, and held in position thereon by means of screws which are passed through the openings 7 and 8, and 13 and 13 and screwed into the ambs l and 1 and between the fiat plates 2 and 3. is placed a roller 5 on which is mounted a shade or awning curtain &,the said roller 5 being a spring actuated roller with pins at either end such as 15' which seat in theholes 15 in the flat plates 2 and 3. On the lower end of the flat plates is a ratchet lock 16, having a round pin extending between the member 16 and 14 on which is mounted an arm 17, having two right-angle bends and a hole in each of said bends. The ends of the U-shaped bail rods 6 pass through said holes 19, 19 and rest in the ratchet teeth on the members 16 and are held there under pressure through a spring on the roller 5 which exerts its pres- 1927. 1 Serial No. 201,126.
sure on awning i having its free end attached tobail6.' Spring 22 mounted on said bailends between the outer bendsot arms 17 and abutment plates 18 held by cotter pins 19 in holes 19, 19 in the bail. ends 10 and 21.
To the bail 6 is connected the lower end of the curtain or awning 1.
The operation of this apparatus is as fol lows: By taking hold of the bail rod 6 and pushing downward to any of the positions determined by the ratchet teeth on the mem bers 16 an awning curtain will be drawn down and spring 22 be seated between the ratchet teeth in member 16 and hold the bail in that position, thereby holding the awning 4, as shown in Fig. 1 or by the dotted line 4 in Fig.2. This slanted position is on the outside of the opening. If this awning is to be used as a shade 011 the inside of the glass the bail 6 is pulled inward instead of being 7 pushed out,and the ends of the rods 10 and 21 will ride around on the smooth curved surface of the member 16, and rest in the lower-most notch in the member 16, thereby holding the shade 4 in a lowered position 7 on the inside of the glass. 1
Such modifications may be made as lie within the scope of the amended claims.
Having thus described my invention that I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In the awning structure a pair of parallel plates having holes at one end for mounting a spring roller, pins fixed to the other end of said plates, a ratchet fixed on each pin and spaced from its plate, an arm pivotally mounted. on each pin between the plate and the ratchet, each arm extending outwardly in a plane parallel to the plane of its plate for a short distance, then having two bends to form an offset portion, the free end being again bent back 90', there being a hole in each bent portion, a U-shaped ball having each end passing through the holes of the respective arm, and bearing against the ratchet, spring means urging each end into engagement With the respective ratchet, and an awning curtain secured at one end to said roller and at the other to the base of the bail.
2.. In the awning structure a pair of parallel plates havin holes at one end for mounting a spring rol er, pins fixed to the other end of said plates, a ratchet fixed on each pin and spaced from its plate, an arm plvotally mounted on each pin between the plate and the ratchet, each arm extending outwardly in a plane parallel to the plane of its plate for a short distance, then having two bends to form an offset portion, the free end being again bent back 90, there being a hole in each bent portion, a U-shaped bail having each end passing through the holes of the respective arm, and bearing against the ratchet, a spring mounted oneach end of said U-shaped bail between said first mentioned 90 bends for urging each end into engagementwith the respective ratchet, and an aWning curtain secured at one end to said roller and at the other to the base of the bail.
GEORGE W. MILLER.
