- CANADA STIRRUIP FOR CONGRETE BEENFORCING UNIT Application filed October 11, 1928; SerialNo. 311,879. I
The present invention relates to improvements in metallicreenforcing units that are embedded withina column, beam or the like formed of plastic material, and has for its principal objectto provide a stirrup for con necting the spaced rods of the reenforcing, unit or structure together; 7
A further object is to provide a stirrupthat is capable of longitudinal adjustment depend- 10 ing upon the distances between the spaced rods ofthe reenforcing structure that are to be connected together, means being provided for securing the adjustable stirrup in its predetermined adjusted position.
Still a further object is to provide a stirrup of the above mentioned character that is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and I durable and further well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
A Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the accompanying drawing wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the same: Y
Figure 1 is a cross section'al'view through a metallic reenforcing structure showing my improved stirrup connecting the rods of the reenforcing structure together.
Figure 2 is an edge elevation of one of the stirrups per se. v
Figure 3 is a view at right angles to Figure 2, the locking sleeves being shown in section.
Figure 4: is a transverse section taken approximately on the line 44 of Figure 3, and
Figure 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the slidable locking sleeves forming a sali- 40 ent part of the present invention.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustrationis shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numerals 1,2, 3, and 4 designate the usual spaced rods that constitute the reenforcing structure for a. (concrete pole, column, beam or the like, and thesereenforcing rods are embedded within the plastic structure in the manner well known in the art. It is one of the principal aims of the present invention to provide a the opposed unit.
means for connecting the adjacent rods-of the reenforcing'unit or structure together so that said reenforcing elements will be properly maintained in position during the construction of therplastic beam, post, column or the like, and to this end I have provided an improved stirrup shown generally at 5.
This stirrup comprises a pair of compler mentary units denoted by the reference characters 6 and-7. Each unit is formed from an elongated strand of wire that is bent back 'upon'itself to form aneye 8 and elongated arms 9 and 10. As is clearly shown in Figure shown in Figure 3, and the crest or crown portions of one arm interfit with the trough portions of the opposite arm, and this feature is also clearly illustrated in Figure 3. The arms of each unit are furthermore disposed in the same plane with each other and thefree ends ofthe arms of one unit have sliding interfitting relation with the free ends of the arms of the opposed unit, and it is of course to be understoodthat the crimps formed in each arm are identical so that said units may be properly disposed in interfitting relation.
v The eye portions 8 are disposed around the respective pair of spaced rods, and for the purpose of securing the complementary units 6 and 7 of each stirrup together, I provide a 7 locking sleeve is formed from a relatively wide strip of metal'bent back upon itself to provide a flat loop, and the sleeves are of such width as to permit the same to slide along the pair of locking sleeves shown atll. Each interfitting and interlocked crimped arms of a Each locking sleeve is preferably of such length as to" cover a little over the distance'between' one pair of adjacent crests as indicated in FigureS. When the locking sleeves arepositioned on the com- I plementary units of each stirrup in the manner. shown'in Figure 3, said units are locked together so that the same cannot be moved toward or awayfrom each other, and consequently the reenforcing rodsengaged by the eyesof these particular units will be mainafter the units have been-properly adjusted; the sleeves 11 are again slid inwardly for dis-.-
'tained in their proper spaced relation with resg ect to-each other. V
hen it becomes necessary to move the rods of the reenforcing structure either toward or away from one another, the slidable sleeves 11 are moved toward the respective eyes so that said sleeii'sj willfbe solelyupohjthei arms of, therespctiye unit, and due to the resiliency of the wire from which the'units'are' forr ned, crimpedarms; will be sprung out rarely so as'to' enable said units to be either moved toward or away from each other, and

Asdisclosed Very clearly in: Figure 1, the
- s'tirrups will maintain the'reenforcin'grods proper spaced relation, andjin addition t e di y PPdS e fo dn 'd' y be connected together by similar stirrups.
