Description

2 Sheets-Sheetl. J. PARENT.
MEM-HOLDER. No. 175,872. Patented April 11, 187e.
N.PETFJIS. PNoTO-LITHDGRAFMR, WASHINGTON D (IA UNITED STATES PATENT EETCE.
JOSEPH PARENT, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MEAT-HOLDERS.
Specih'cation forming part of Letters Patent No. 175.872, dated April 11, 1876; application filed March 15, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH PARENT, of Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Meat-Slicer;V and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of ameat-cutter, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is a plan View and Fig. 2 a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 3 is another side elevation showing the machine open. Fig. 4 is a view of a detached part thereof. A j
A represents the bed-plate of my meatcutter, in which is firmly fastened a vertical metal plate, B, of suitable dimensions, said plate having at top and bottom on one edge projections b .1), between which is fastened another plate, G, also iirmly secured in the bed-plate. The plate is in one edge cut o'ut at top and bottom for the projections b to fit into, and a rod, a, passed vertically downward fastens the two plates together. In the outer edge of the plate C are inserted and riveted a series of spring-metal strips, D, placed a suitable distance apart, as shown. The outer ends of these strips are firmly secured to a handle, G, formed with a hook, G', at the outer end. The strips D pass through beveled slots in one edge of a plate, E, and a bar, E', is fastened over the strips to said plate, forming thereby a sliding plate on the j springstrips D. The opposite edge of the plate E and the corresponding edge of the stationary plate B are constructed like the two leaves of a door-hinge, the plate B having a vertical spindle, d, and the plate E a socket, e, to be placed thereon. At a suitable point on the spring-strips D are outwardlyprojecting rods t' connected at their outer ends by a vertical plate or bar, h. To the 4inner side of the metal plate B is, by setscrews m m, fastened a'wooden bar, H, having its inner face concave, and provided with a series of horizontal grooves corresponding with the spaces between the strips D. The meat is placed upon the bedplate A close to thewooden bar H, and the inner ends'of the spring-strips D. By now taking hold of the handle G the strips D are closed around the meat, and the plate E, sliding to the outer ends of the strips, may be put in its place on spindle d ofthe plate B, and the lower end` thereof fitted in a groove in the bed-plate.
To compress the meat and form it into round shape the handle G is pulled so as to draw the strips D close and tight around the meat, and the strips are held by a shaft, J, placed in the hook G', and inserted in any one of a series of holes, a: made in the bedplate.
When the meat is thus compressed and held in position it may be cut into slices by passing the knife into and through between the strips D, the rack 'i hforming a convenient startingpoint and rest.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A meat-compressing and holding band formed of a series of spring-metal strips, D,
,arranged parallel to each other, with suitable spaces between them, and attached to a stationary plate at one end and adjustable at the other end, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination, with the bed-plate A, of the stationary plates B C, strips D, handle `G, land sliding plate F, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. In' combination with the strips D and handle G, arranged as described, the hook G', shaft J, and series of holes x inthe bedplate,as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of a two witnesses.
JOSEPH PARENT.
