Description

A. CARLSN.
CHICKEN BEHEADER` APPLICATION FILED Aue.'3,191r.
WITNESSES gli' APauentw July 2, 1918.
INVENTOR ATTORTEY ANDREW CARLSN, OF HLLEN, NEBRASKA.
CHICKEN-BEHJEADER.
Application filed August 13, 1917.
To all whom t may concern:
lie it known that 1, ANDREW CARLSON, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Mullen, in the county of Hooker and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chicken-Beheaders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to guillotines, and it more particularly relates to a device for beheading chickens.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a simple, effective and comparatively inexpensive device whereby the heads of chickens and other fowls may be instantaneously and completely severed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may he attached to a fence post, or other support to which it may remain as a. fixture.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is strong and durable.
@ther objects and advantages may become apparent to persons who read the following detailed description in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation view, and
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, the section being taken along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
ileferring to these drawings in detail, in which similar reference characters corre spend with similaf parts throughout the several views, the support 10 may consist of a. post, the corner of an out-house, or any vertical surface. A bar or strap 11 of sheet metal is slightly,7 odset at 12 and provided with apertures through which bolts or other fastening elements 13 extend, the latter also extending into the support 10 so as to rigidly unite the support and the bar 11. A pair of blades 14 are mounted in parallel and spaced relation upon the supporting bar 11, rivets 15 being employed for securing the blades, while washers 16 are placed around the respective rivets 15, and effect the spacing of the blades 14. Each blade 14 is provided with an upwardly extending element 17, and these elements coperate with one another for guiding a vertically movable blade 18. The elements 17 also constitute a stop against which the neck of the chicken may rest for preventing removal of the saine from the space between the knives 14 and 18 when the latter is raised. @ne of the elements 17 also coperates with a handle bar Specification of Letters Batent.

19 for limiting downward movement of the knife 18.
The handle bar 19 is preferably formed of a rectilinear strip or bar of metal, except that one end portion is bent at 2O so as to provide a space between its end and the adjacent end of the knife 18. The supporting bar 11 is embraced in the space between the ends of the knife 18 and handle bar 19, while a rivet or pivot 21 extends through alined apertures in the members 11, 18 and 19. rlhis arrangement of the pivot 21 and its adjuncts insures a strong pivotal connection of these elements while accurately guiding the knife 18. Rivets 22'are employed for rigidly uniting the knife 18 and handle bar 19. The handle bar is provided with a ball or weight 23 on its free end, for a purpose which will hereinafter become apparent.
In operating this device, the lever or handle bar 19 is first swung upon the pivot until the gap between the blades 14 and 18 is suf* ficient to allow the head of the chicken to pass through this gap, and when its head has passed entirely through the gap, the
lever 19 is swung downward with a quick movement, so that the momentum of the weight cooperates with the lever and knives for instantly severing the chickens neck.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that l have provided a device of this character which is thoroughly practical and efficient for the purpose intended, and which, it is believed, will become very popular and meet with great commercial success.
Although l have described this embodiment of my invention, minutely, it is to be understood that my invention is not limited to these exact details of construction and arrangements .of parts, but my invention may be limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
What l claim as my invention is:
1. A device of the character specified, comprising a fixed blade supported at one end in horizontal position and provided at its opposite end with a vertically extending element forming a guide and double stop, a pivoted blade disposed against a side of the fixed blade and the vertically extending element thereof, and a handle bar pivoted in line with the pivoted blade and secured to the upper edge thereof and disposed in the plane of the fixed blade and engageable with the top of the vertical element thereof.
2. A device of the character speeied, ment of the xed blade, and pivot means comprising a bar, a fixed blade secured at constituting the handle-bar and second blade one end to the bar and having an integral to each other and to the before mentioned guide and stop element projecting `from its bar.
