Description
May 6, 1930. e. E. SMITH 1,757,550
GAS COCK Filed Nov. 29, 1926 INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented May 6, 1930 UNITED STATES GEORGE E. SMITH, OF BAI TIMORE, MARYLAND GAS COCK Application filed November 29, 1926. Serial No. 151,311.
The object of my invention is the providing of an improved gas cock.
A further object of my invention is the providing of an improved means for latching a gas cock in closed position.
A further object of my invention is the providing of an improved means for latching a gas cock in closedposition, said latching means concealed within the cock.
A further object of my invention is the providing of a latching means in a cock concealed with reference to its operation on the moving parts, but accessible from the ex terior for unlatching purposes, if desired.
.With the foregoing and other objects in View, my invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangements of parts as hereinafter specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying draw- 2o ings, wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings of the herein-described embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a view, in elevation, of the type of gas cook particularly adapted for gas stove installa tion, provided with my improved locking. means; Fig. 2 is a view of my improved cock, taken in elevation, and is somewhat similar to the view shown in Fig. 1, with the upper part of the barrel broken away to show the plug and a section of the latching pin in 35 place, showing the plug at right angles to its position as shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view,
taken in elevation, of a plug removed from the cock shown in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken through 4-4 of Figs. 2 and 3; 40 and Fig. 5 is a view, in elevation, of the plug removed, taken at right angles to the view shown in Fig. 3.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
1 is the barrel, or casing, of the gas cock which is turned out tapered in the interior 5 to accommodate the plug 2. Plug 2 is fitted with a ground joint and is held in position by spring 3 and nut l. The spring being in compression tends to draw the plug into position. 5 is a washer against which spring 3 operates. 6 is the opening through the plug 2 to permit the passage of the gas or fluid when the plug is open or in alignment with passages 7.
8 is a pin preferably screwed to fit tightly into barrel 1, so that the same may be removed from the exterior, if desired. The interior end of pin 8 is formed to fit into slot 9, in plug'2, said slot being formed as shown in Figs. 2 and 4;. The position of the plug in Fig. 2 shows the pin 8 in slot 9 in latched position. To turn the plug it is necessary to raise or withdraw the same from the barrel 1 against the pressure of spring 3 until pin 8 bears on the lower side of the slot, when the plug may berotated and the pin, following the incline permits the plug to again practically seat itself when in open position. Reversing this operation by turning the plug, the same is raised by the pin acting as a cam until the closed position is reached, when it falls back into seated position and in the vertical portion of the slot, thus locking the same.
Referring particularly to Fig. 5, it will be noticed that slot 9 comprising three portions; one parallel with the axis of the plug which is used in latching, one in a plane at right angles to the axis of the plug which is used in turning the plug when free of the latching means, and one joining the other two portions.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s:
1. A cock provided with a barrel and a plug operating therein, a stop secured to said barrel and operating 011 a cam within said plug, said cam at one portion thereof being parallel to the axis of said plug to latch the same in closed position and at another portion thereof being inclined to lift said plug from its seat and meeting said, first portion to permit said stop to lock said plug While operating in said cam.
2. In a cock having a plug operating Withing a barrel, a barrel, and yieldable means to maintain said plug Within said'barrel, a
stop secured to said barrel operating Within said plug in a groove parallel to the axis of the plug for latching purposes and in a groove at right angles to said first mentioned groove when unlatched, and a groove joining the ends of said two grooves. 7' g 1 g E. SMITH.
