SAFETY GAS COGK.
Application filed December 18, 1924. Serial No. 756,720.
This invention is an improvement in safety attachments for the ordinary gas cook and includes a pair of pressed latches embracing the oppo of the type of spring site edges handle and pivotally secured there- An object of this invention is to provide a safety device for gas cocks and in the construction shown,
I provide a transverse passage in the valve having positioned therein an expansion spring for latches outwardly into engagement casing.

The gas valve casing 10 may be connected.
to the usual fuel pipe 11 and is provided with diametrically oppositely disposed vertical recesses or grooves bore forming seats for receiving wardly projecting lugs of the latches 14:.
The latches 14 have their outer 12 entirely in its the out- 13 on the inner ends ends 15 arcuated to conform to the shape of the handle 16 of the gas cook, and said ends are formed with keepers overlappin the opposite edges of the handle 16 by means of the iwardly proyecting flanges 17 which are provided with openings 18 for stud 19 for pivotally securing the the handle 16. The handle 16 is with the vertical lateral recesses o 20 to receive the inwardly the latches 14:, these grooves be brought into register receiving the latches to provided r grooves curved portions of 20 adapted to with the vertical recesses or grooves 12 which lie entirely within the bore of the casing.
The usual valve 21 is provide transverse passage 22 parallel to th d with a e gas outis unlocked it can be turned let and terminating in the recess 20. Positioned within this transverse passage is an expansion spring 23 extending beyond the ends of the same engaging and pressing the inner ends of latches 1t outwardly so that the lugs 13 will engage in the recesses 12 of the valve casing thereby locking the valve against accidental turning.
In the present disclosure, the valve and handle have been. shown disposed above the pipe line, but it is to be understood that the valve and handle carrying the pivoted latches may be disposed below the pipe line when so desired. The present invention provides a safety attachment for the usual gas cocks and includes a construction which will prevent accidental turning of the valve when it is closed. In order to turn the valve to open the same it becomes necessary to press the ends of the latches inwardly toward the axis and against the tension of the expansion spring, thereby withdrawing the outwardly projecting lugs from the re cesses in the valve casing. When the valve like any other valve, but when the valve is locked, the pivoted latches are pressed into the recesses in the valve casing by the expansion spring and thereby prevent accidental turning of the valve.
Having thus described the invention it is to be understood that minor changes may be made without departing from the scope tended across the ends of the transverse passage and actuated by the expansion spring therein and having outwardly projecting lugs at said'extended portions, and the casing ported to cooperate with the valve and a transverse pasan expansion channel and having vertical recesses entirely within its bore adapted to receive the latch lugs under the tension of the expansion spring.
2. A gas cook comprising a handled transversely pierced turning plug and bored casing, the bore of said casing having diametrically oppositely longitudinal grooves, said longitudinal grooves being entirely Within the said bore, said plug seated within said casing and provided with a transverse spring receiving chamber, an expansion spring Within said chamber, diametrically opposite latch arms having inwardly projecting flanges or ears for engaging and embracing the sides of the valve handle, said plug having diametrically opposite vertical grooves in the sides thereof, the latch arms pivotally connected to the valve handle, the latch arms disposed in the vertical side grooves of the said plug and outwardly turned lugs on the inner ends of the latch arms for engaging Within the vertical grooves of the bore, the respective vertical grooves of the plug and bore adapted to be brought into register to permit the gas cock to be locked in shut oii' position.
