This invention relates to smoke consuming devices and in particular to one arranged for use in connection with steam generating boilers.
A particular object of the invention is to provide a smoke burner which gathers the heavy smoke that is passing up through the fire box and which returns the same to the boiler to be consumed.
In a great many neighborhoods, especially where soft coal is employed in boiler room operation, many complaints are made because an excess of smoke leaving the stack of the pewer plant, pollutes the air. Another objection is that the efiiciency of the boiler is lowered as an operating unit due to the waste of smoke which contains combustible material but which has not been consumed in the boiler.
A further object of my invention, therefore, is to provide a steam operating smoke burn ng device which may be used in connection with any coal burning power plant where steam is available so that the smoke, upon leaving the boiler and passing into the fire box, will be gathered and returned to the fire box for thorough consumption.
To enable others skilled in the art to fully comprehend the underlying features of my invention that they may embody the same in the various modifications in structure and relation contemplated, a drawing depicting a preferred form has been annexed as a part of this disclosure and in such drawing, similar reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout all the views, of which,

Referring to the drawings in detail, 5 indicates the boiler holding masonry or construction in which is supported the usual fire tube boiler 6, the tubes being indicated by the numeral 7 in Figure 2 and the end of the boiler 6 being arranged to support the smoke gathering hood 8 which, if desired, may extend entirely across the fire box 9 in which it is positioned, the hood being of any desired cross sectional shape but preferably semi-circular,
as shown in Figure 3, so thatit will have a high point in which will be accumulated the smoke as it comes out of the tube of the boiler 6. i v
ltis quite necessary in consuming the smoke that the same be returned to the fire boximmediately over the grate and where the hottest flame is,'and to this end, I have provided a piece of pipe 10 having a flared intake mouth 11. This piece of pipe enters the hood 8 adjacent one end thereof and'its depending portion 12 is arranged to hold the sleeve 13 to which is threaded the nipple M which abuts against the end of the depending portion 12 of the pipe 10; This nipple is provided with an enlarged interior chamber 15, the exit from which is restricted as at 16 by reason of the fact that the interior walls are provided with a bevel 17. The end of the sleeve 13 is bevelled at 18 to substantially match thebevel 17 of the nipple 14 which may be adjusted so that its bevel 18 may approach or recede from the bevel 17, thus providing a restricted pas sageway which acts'to increase the velocity. of the steam passing therethrough, the steam being fed to a suitable pipe 19 whose end is threaded as at 20 into one side of the nipple 1 The steam line is provided with a suit V able control valve 21 and the pipe, of course, leads from any suitable source of steam pressure so that it is assumed that the pressure is always in the line 20 and while the smoke consuming device is in operation, is of course, 8 5 7 entering the chamber 15 and passing out through the restricted passageways 16 in the end thereof. The pressure inthe enlarged chamber 15 causing the stem to have an increased velocity as it passes the end of the sleeve 13, thus drawing in with it and intermingling, the smoke which has been drawn in through the flared intake mouth 11 of the pipe 10. The steam pressure, of course, forces the mixture through the pipe 22out the flared end 26 thereof and into the fire box 24 above the grate 25. The smoke therefore, passing through the boiler tubes 7 is caught under the hood 8 and due to the suction at the end of the sleeve 13, is drawn out of the hood through the pipe 10 through the s1eeve13 and, mixing with the steam coming in through the line 19 and through the nipple 14:, is caused to move rapidly through the pipe 22, thus emerging from the flared mouth 26 thereof and directly into the fire box 24 for complete consumption. 7 I
It is evident that in a construction of this character, all the combustible material that has heretofore been lost by passage through the smoke box and into the stack is reburned in the fire box, thus saving the coal and consequently raising the efficiency of the boiler as an operatingunit. v v
It is also evidentthat While Ihave shown a hood of elongated nature, the hood may be of any size or, type-desired, it being evident also that my improved smoke consumer or burning device may be applied to any power plant or boiler as set up and does not necessitate removal of the parts of the fire box or boiler for its insertion and use. 7

smoke collecting hood positioned in a chimney, a'pipe flared at one end thereof extending into the hood,-a sleeve open at both ends thereof in the said pipe, a chambered coupling screw threadedly connected to the sleeve, a v tapering end on the sleeve, a corresponding- 1y tapered end in the coupling surrounding the tapered end of the sleeve, arranged to form between them a restricted passageway,
a steam line connected to the coupling and an outlet pipe secured to the taper bearing end of the coupling provided with a flared end extending into a combustion chamber for the purpose speclfied.
