The hip tile is usually provided with flanged cut-outs to interfit with the field tile and in view of the different positioning of the field tile on adjacent slopes it becomes a difficult matter to design a metal hip tile which has the lines and characteristic appearance of the ordinary burnt clay tile or Spanish tile and which interfits with the field tile. 5
One object of thepresent invention is to provide a metalhip tile construction which is adjustable to interfit with the field tile of the adjacent slopes irrespective of the. irregular or different positioning of the field tile and which, in each adjustment,presents the uniform and characteristic appearance of Spanish tile. r
In carrying out the present invention, the hip tile is of three piece construction, having two side pieces and a crown piece. The side pieces are independently adjustable and have flanges adapted to be secured to the hip rafter and to the slopes and also are provided with flanged cut-outs adapted to interfit with the field tile. The side pieces and the crown piece have flanges or other means adapted to interfit slidably whereby to interlock the crown piece with the side pieces in any and all adjustments.
Other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of the construction. arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the hip of a roof with the sections of the hip tile in place and certain of the field tile in place;
Figure 2 is a View in transverse vertical section taken in the plane extending at right angles to the hip rafter;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary perspective View showing how a side piece of the hip tile is organized with the hip rafter and with its roof slope;
Figure 4 is a detail perspective view of one of the side pieces;
Figure 5 is a fragmentary sectional view showing how the crown piece of the hip tile is slidably interfitted with each side piece;
Figure 6 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in section illustrating oneof the side pieces and the coacting crown; and

The hip tile 7 comprises a pair of similar sidepieces designated generally at 8 and 9, one such side piece being disposed on each side of the hip rafter, and a crown piece designated generally at 20. The side pieces 8 and 9 are of identical construction 'so that a description of one will apply to both. The side pieces are made up of sections of suitable length, each of which is constructed of a single piece of metal bent to provide angularly extending body members 10 and 11.
The body member 10 extends vertically when the section is in use and is offset inwardly from the outer edge of the body mem- J ber 11 by means of an inclined offsetting and connecting portion 12. The body member" 11 extends toward the rafter 4 upwardly at of the vertical body member 10 and are secured to the adjacent roof slope by nails 14. The upper body member 11 also has a mar ginal attaching flange 15 to be secured by nails 16 to the hip rafter 4. The vertical body member 10 of each section of the side piece is provided with a flanged cut-out 17.
As shown in Figure 2, the side'pieces 8 and 9 are dis-posed on the opposite sides of the hip rafter 4, each side piece being secured to the hip rafter and to theadjacent roof slope. The sections of the side pieces are independently adjustable so as to be interfitted with the field. tile irrespective ofthe positioning thereof. Adjacent sections of each side piece may overlap more or less or abut'in end to end relation. As shown, the curved portions of the field tile are snugly fitted in the flanged cut-outs of the side pieces. Field tile are usually laid from left to right and progressing in this wise on a hip roof frequently results in so positioning the field tile that the field tile on one roof slope intersects the hip tile at different points than those at which the field tile on the other roof slope intersects the hip tile. The side pieces of applicants hip tile have their sections positioned to interfit with the field tile whatever may be the position oft-he field tile and the sections of the side pieces of the hip tile are then nailed to the hip rafter and then to the roof slopes. After the side pieces of the hip tile are securely positioned the crown piece 20 is slidably interfitted therewith. The crown piece is made up of a number of sections and each section has a curved body 21 terminating in inturned marginal flanges 22 which slide under the shoulders provided by the edges of the body members 11 and the offsets 12 to interlock the sections of the crown piece with the side pieces. The crown piece sections are curved or arched transversely and at points along their lengths as shown at 2'7 and-28 to simulate Spanish tile. An ornamental end section 25 may be provided atthe lower end of the crown piece. The crown piece is held in position by the engagement of its flanges 22 with the shoulders 12 and also by means of nails 26 which may be driven through the crown piece into the hip rafter. In'order to insure proper sealing between the joint and to aid in securing the crown sections in position, the upper end of each section is provided with a plurality of transversely extending corrugations, as shown at 23. The lower end 23 of the transverse arch 27 is provided with a slightly reversed bend so as to adapt it to overlap and snugly interfitwith any one of the corrugations, as shown in Figurei'. With this construction crown sections may be overlapped more or less depending upon conditions, and
The invention claimed is:
1. A hip tile including'separate and independently adjustable side pieces, each side piece having means engageable with and adapted for attachment to the hip rafter and means engageable with and adapted for attachment to the roof slope with which the side piece is associated and also having cutouts for the field tile and lengthwise shoulders above the cut outs, and a crown spanning the rafter and the side pieces and provided with internal marginal flanges engageable with theshoulders of the side pieces.
2. A hip tile including separately and independently adjustable side pieces,each side piece including a vertical body member and an inclined body member, there being an offset between the members presenting a shoulder, and a crown piece having inturned marginal flanges slidably interfitted with the shoulders.

A hip tile including a plurality of separate and independently adjustable side pieces adapted to interfit with field tile and having marginal shoulders above the portions thereof that interfit with the field tile, and a plurality of crown pieces, each having inturned marginal flanges slidably interfitted with the shoulders of the side pieces, and each of said crown pieces having continuous transverse corrugations at one end and a transversely extending arch on the other end, the arch on any crown piece being adapted to interfit with one of the corrugations on an adjacent crown piece to provide a water proof joint.
4. A hip tile for use with a roof having a usual hip rafter and the usual hip roof flanking the hip rafter, comprising separate and independently adjustable side pieces located on the opposite sides of the hip rafter and having flanges whereby they may be secured to the hip rafter and to the roof slope, said side pieces also having shoulders and a single crown spanning the rafter and havin means interfitting with the shoulders of the side pieces to interlock the crown piece and the side pieces.
5. Means for covering the hip joint of a roof having a hip rafter, including a plurality of side sections on each side of the rafter and a crown piece adapted to interfit with said sections, each side section being adapted-to be adjusted longitudinally of an adjacent section and having a cut-out intermediate its ends for adapting the section to interfit with a raised portion of a field tile on the roof, whereby the sections may be made to snugly interfit with field tile spaced various distances along the hip joint.
