3 Claims.
This invention relates to an improved construction of metal roofing and more particularly to improved means for interlocking strips or sections of metal roofing and for covering the driven fastenings employed for securingthe strips or sections to a roof surface to be covered by the roofing strips.
More particularly, it is an aim of the invention to provide a construction of metal roofing having interlocking joints for connecting the roofing sections or strips, said joints being so designed as to enclose and engage driven fastenings by means of which the sections or strips are attached to a surface to be covered.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter become more fully apparent from the following description of the drawing, which illustrates preferred embodiments of the inven tion, and wherein:
Figure 1 is an end view showing a plurality of the roofing strips interlocked with one another and fastened to a surface to be covered thereby,
Figure 2 is a perspective view, on an enlarged scale, of one of the strips shown in Figure 1,
Figure 3 is an end view in elevation of another embodiment of the invention, and
Figure 4 is a similar view of still another embodiment of the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, wherein like reference characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the different views, l designates generally a strip of roofing material which is preferably formed of sheet metal and which may be of any desired length and width. One longitudinal edge of the strip I 0 is rolled to form an upset tube like portion II which is open at its bottom l2. Th'strip I 0 is also rolled adjacent its opposite longitudinal edge to form an upset tube like portion l3 which is likewis provided with a slotted opening M in the bottom thereof. The tube like portions II and I3 preferably'extend the length of the strip Ill. The tube like portion i3 is smaller than the tube like portion II and its slot I4 is smaller than the slotted opening I 2. The longitudinal edge of the strip III which is disposed beyond or on the outer side of the tube like portion l3 forms a securing flange l5 which is provided with a plurality of spaced apertures It for re ceiving driven fastenings.
A plurality of the strips III are adapted to be mounted tocover a roof surface I! and to form' a sheet metal roofing. Toapply th strips l0, one strip I II is first laid in proper position on the surface l1 and secured thereto by means of a number of driven fastenings l8 which extend through the openings iii. The tube like portion ll of another strip in is then telescoped over the tube like portion l3 of the strip I0 which has already been secured. The last mentioned strip l0 projects from the side edge'of the first mentioned strip I 0 which is provided with the flange l5 so that its intermediate portion I9 overlie the flange I5 and the fastenings 18 of the first strip Ill. The flange l5 of the last strip I0 is then attached by additional fastenings l8 to the surface I1. This operation is repeated with each additional strip in for interlocking the strips to form the metal roof and for securing the. strips so that the fastenings I 8 will all be covered.
' 20 will be elevated above the surface I1, as illustrated in Fig. l. A strip I0 is then applied to .the surface I! and the tube like portion l3 thereof slid into position over the head 2| with the shank of the nail 20 extending through the slotted opening 14. Obviously, a number of nails 20 may be employed to engage each of the tube like portions l3. A second strip I 0 is then slid in like manner. over the heads 2lof additional nails 20 while at the same time the tube like portions ll of the second strip III is telescoped over the tube like portion I 3 of the first strip ID for interlocking the two strips. This operation is likewise repeated until all of the strips I-Il have been applied and connected to form the complete roof structure.
In lieu of the driven fastenings l8 or the nails 20 the strips I0 may be'attached to the roof surface I! by means of nails22, as also illus trated in Figure l, which are driven through the upper portion of the tube like portion l3 and which extend through the slotted opening l4. Theheads of the nails 22. are made relatively flat and areforced down tight against the tube like portion. l3 so that the tube like portion ll of another strip l0 may be telescoped thereover for interlocking the two strips after which the portion I 3 of the second strip is similarly fastened by nails 22. It will thus be seen that three ways of fastening the strips II! by means of driven fastenings to the roof surface I! are illustrated in Figure 1 and by each means the driven fasten- -ings arecovered to protect them from the elements to prevent rusting and also to prevent leakage through they openings through which longitudinal edges.

As the tube like portion H of the first strip l8 which is laid may be disposed at an end of the surface I1 in which case it would not engage over a tube like portion 13, this portion ll may engage heads 2| of nails 20, in the manner, as illustrated in Figure 1, to thereby secure the free end of the first strip III to the surface H.
In Figure 3 another embodiment of the invention is disclosed wherein a modified form of roofing strip 23 is shown provided with three longitudinally disposed tube like portions 24 which correspond to the tube like portions l3 and which are provided with slotted openings 25 in their under sides. The side edges of the strip 23, which are disposed beyond the outer tube like portions 24, form flanges 28, corresponding tothe flanges i5 and which are adapted to be fastened to the roof surface H by fastenings l8. The intermediate tube like portion 24 is held in place by means of a number of nails 28, in the same manner, as illustrated in Figure 1. A portion of a second roofing strip 23a is shown in Figure 3 which is provided along each of its longitudinal edges with a tube like portion 21, one of which portions 21 is shown in Figure 3. The strips 23 and 23a are arranged alternately with the strips 23 first being attached to the roof surface I! after which the tube like portion 21 of each longitudinal edge roofs, all of the joints formed, in each of the three embodiments of the invention, can be sealed with paint or plastic material to insure against leakage. The different embodiments of the invention may be employed with either smooth or corrugated patterns of roofing and will provide a leakproof metal roof which will be rigid and which will require less roof support and produce of a strip 23a istelescoped over the portions 24 which are disposed adjacent to adjacent edges of two spaced roofing strips 23 to thereby interlock the strip 23a simultaneously with two strips 23. This operation is repeated until the complete roof is formed.
In Figure 4, a third embodiment of the invention is disclosed including roofing strips 28, each of which is provided along one longitudinal edge with a tube like portion 29 corresponding to the portion I l of the strip III. The strips 28 are provided with flanges 30 formed by their opposite Adjacent the flanges 30, each of the strips 28 is folded twice upon itself to form an upwardly projecting interlocking portion 3| which is V-shaped in cross section. To apply strips 28 to the roof surface I! tube like portion 29 of the first strip 28 is slid over headed nails 20 for attaching the edge of the strip 28 thereof which is formed by the portion 28 to the surface H. The flange 38 of said strip 28 is then secured by meansof driven fastenings l8 to the surface [1. The tube like portion 29 of a second strip 28 is then telescoped over the portion 3| of the first strip 28 after which the flange 38 of the second strip 28 is secured by fastenings [8 to the surface ll. This operation is repeated for interlocking the different strips 28 and for securing them to the surface ll until the roofing is completed.
It will be noted that in each of the three embodiments of the invention all driven fastenings which are used are covered. On extreme flat a neat appearance.
Various modifications and changes are contemplated and may obviously be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter defined by the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A metal roofing comprising elongated metal strips, each of said strips being provided with a plurality of rolled portions extending lengthwise thereof and forming upset tube like portions, said tube like portions having slotted openings in their under sides, one of said tube like portions being disposed adjacent each of the longitudinal edges of the strip, the tube like portion along one of the longitudinal edges of the strip being larger than the other of said tube like portions, said smaller tube like portion being constructed and arranged to receive the larger tube like portion of another corresponding strip for connecting the strips, and a headed driven fastening secured in a surface to be covered by the strip, the head of said driven fastening being disposed in the smaller of said tube like portions.
2. A metal roofing comprising a plurality of sheet metal roofing strips, each of said strips including'a plurality of longitudinally disposed upset tube like portions, said tube like portions being open at their bottoms, certain of the tube like portions of the different strips being larger than other of the tube like portions, said smaller tubelike portions telescoping into the larger tube like portions for interlocking the strips, and fastening means engaging a surface to be covered by said strips and having enlarged heads spaced from said surface for slidably engaging in the smaller of said tube like portions for retaining the strips in engagement with said surface.
3. A metal roofing comprising a plurality of sheet metal roofing strips, each of said stripsincluding a plurality of longitudinally disposed upset tube like portions, said tube like portions being open at their bottoms, certain of the tube like portions of the different strips being larger than other of the tube like portions, said smaller tube like portions telescoping into the larger tube like portions for interlocking I the strips, and
headed driven fastenings disposed in a surface to be covered by the strips with the headsof the fastenings disposed in an elevated position relatively thereto for engaging the smaller of the tube like portions for attaching the strips to said surface in such a manner that the fastenings do not penetrate any of the strips.
