This invention relates to improvements in knife holders or sheaths adapted to be secured to the wearing apparel of the user and supported in position for the convenient insertion and removal of a knife, the invention being especially adapted for the use of paperhangers, although it is useful for persons in cutting clot-h, or for shoe workers, and for many otherl purposes.

The primary object of the present invention is theprovision of a sheath which is oonstructed so that a knife may be easily and quickly inserted without danger of injury to the person, with theknife frictionally engaging the walls of the sheath and the latter held in such position as to prevent accidental removal of the knife, yet will permit the knife to be readily removed when desired.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to

be hereinafter more fully described7 illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawing in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the sheath which is made of metal is preferably constructed of a length of material bent intermediate its ends to provide a rear wall 10 and a front wall 11, the side edges of these walls being secured together by solder or other suitable means s0 that a pocket 12 is provided which is open at the top. The rear wall 10 extends an appreciable distance above the top of the front wall 11 at the open end of the pocket and the upper 0 edges of both of these Walls are rounded or 1928. rolled as shown at 13 and 14 respectively. The extended portion of the rear wall provides a surface against which the end of the knife blade 15 may engage when the latter is being placed within the sheath, while the rolled edge 14 of the front wall 11 will act to guide the knife. The rolled edge 13 of the rear wall 10 forms a rounded surface to reduce wear upon the garment to which the sheath is attached, a portion of the garment being indicated at 16. The material of which the sheath is made is of a resilient character and the sheath is of an appreciable width, so that when the blade 15 of a knife is inserted within the sheath, the walls of the latter will frictionally engage the blade so as to hold it against accidental removal.

The back of the sheath is provided with means indicated at 17 whereby the sheath may be attached t-o the clothing, the means shown consisting of a safety pin. Extending from the rear or back of the sheath is a substantially V-shaped projection 18, which, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawing, projects the lower portion of the sheath outward beyond the vertical plane of the top of the sheath so that tendency of the knife to fall from the sheath is further resisted irrespective of the position of the user.

Again, this position of the sheath presents the extended portion of the rear wall 10 in such position that the knife may be readily inserted.

The outer front wall of the sheath is provided along one edge with an inturned flange 19, while extending from the opposite edge of this wall are lower and upper lugs 20. A sheet of emery paper 21 or other abrasive material is clamped upon the front of the sheath beneath the lugs and flange and provides means for sharpening and cleaning the blade of the knife. The emery cloth 21 may be conveniently renewed when desired.

The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended j claims.

Having described the invention What is claimed is 1. A device of the character described comprising opposed flat relatively Wide Walls connected along opposite edges to provide a knife receiving pocket open at one end and having the Walls so spaced as to frictionally engage opposite sides of a knife blade inserted Within the pocket, one Wall of the pocket extending beyond the other Wall at the open end of said pocket and being flush with the inside Wall of the pocket, oppositely rolled edges upon opposite sides of the mouth of the pocket, and means to secure the device to the Wearing apparel of the user.

2. A device of the character described comprising a metallic knife sheath adapted for frictional engagement with a knife inserted therein, means to secure the sheath to the Wearing apparel of the user, and means eX- tending from one face of the sheath for contact With said apparel to normally force one end of the sheath outward beyond the plane of the other end.
