This invention relates to means for hanging sliding window sash, and other sl idingly mounted members, an object being to provide a hinge which is constructed so that the member with which it is used may be slidingly opened or closed in the ordinary manner, or swung laterally when desired, and while the invention is especially designed for use with the sash cord attaching device as disclosed in my copending application, it is useful in connection with other sash cord attaching de vices, and in various other connections.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a hinge which is capable of use in places where it is'desirable to provide a read ily attachable or detachable hinge.
With the above and otl er objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to

Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a portion of a window frame within which is slidmgly mounted a sash 11. The
frame 10 and the sash 11 represent a pair of relatively movable members which are adapted to be connected by the hinge which constitutes the present invention.
This hinge comprises a plate 12 which is adapted to be secured to one of the relatively movable members, for example, the window frame 10. It also includes a plate 12 each of these plates being provided with a pair of spaced lugs 13 and 1%. These lugs carry hinge pins 15 which extend through a link 16, so that the plates 12 and 12 are hingedly connected, the connection being such as to permit the plates to be compactly folded when the hinge is closed and to be widely opened when the hinge is open. The plate 12 is provided with an opening 1'? within which the plate 1 is adapted to be received, and if desired, the plate 12 may be positioned within a mortise 18 provided in the member or frame 10.
The outer edge of the plate 12 is provided with an inturned flange 19 which is spaced from the face of the plate so as to provide a groove 20, while the lugs 14 carry inwardly extending lugs 21 which are also spaced from the plate 12 and provide grooves at this end of the plate.
Secured to the sash or member 11 is an an attaching plate 22; This plate may be secured to the. sash 11 by any suitable means. For example, it may be carried by a housing 23 which is mortised within the sash 11 and which includes a sleeve 24; whose outer end opens through the plate 22 and registers with an opening 25 provided in the plate 12'. The sleeve 2 L slidingly receives a bolt 26 and this bolt isprovid'ed with a finger piece 27 which extends through an opening provided in the housing23 within convenient reach for operation.
Normally, the bolt 26 is retracted as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings, so that the sash 11- may be rreely slidable within the frame in the ordinary manner. By bringing the sleeve 24: into register with the opening 25 of the plate 12 and movingthe bolt inward as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings, theplate 12 may be locked to the sash 11 so as to permit the latter to swing upon. the hinge.
Where the invention is used in connection with a slidingly mounted weight balanced sash, means must be provided for releasing the sash from the sash cord so as to permit the sash to swing inward as desired. In my copending application before mentioned, there is disclosed a sash cord attaching device by means of which the cord maybe attached to the sash in a manner to permit of ready separation. This device is of sectional formation and comprises a cord carried section 28 and a sash carried section 29, the latter being slidable upon guide pins 30, which are carried by the sash and arranged diagonally in a slot 31 provided in the sash. The section 28 is recessed as shown at 32 and extending transversely of this recess is a pin 33 which is adapted to engage a tongue 34 which extends from the member 29 and into the recess. The member 29 carries stop pins 35 which operate in diagonally arranged slots 36. A lever 37 is mounted at the top of the sash and engages the member 29 so that by manipulating this lever the member 29 may be moved toward and away from the section 28 so as to move the tongue 34 into and out of engagement with the pin 83.- When so engaged, the weight of the sash will be balanced by a weight (not shown) which is attached ':0 the cord 38. By moving the section 29 toward the sash, the sections 28 and 29 will be separated so that the sash may be swung laterally as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings. When the sections 28 and 29 are engaged, side plates 39 which are carried by the section 29 enter a groove 40 provided in the window frame 10 for the accommodation of the section 28.
lVhile the invention is shown and described in connection with a particular type of sash cord attaching device, it is to be understood that it may be used with other types of devices, or it may be used for hingedly connecting a pair of relatively movable members a where no sash cord is employed.
In Figure 5 of the drawings, the attaching plate 22 carries a flange 41 which engages in a groove 42 provided in the lugs 14" which are connected to the plate 12*. In this form of the invention only one hinge pin 15 is necessary as the link 16 is dispensed with.
In Figure 6, the attaching plate 22 is provided with a flange 41 upon each side edge. These flanges are adapted to engage in grooves 42 carried by the hinge plate 12.
While only one hinge pin is illustrated in Figures 5 and 6, obviously, the hinge may be of the double pin type as shown in Figure 4.
If desired, the hinge plate,12 may be provided with a spring finger 43 to yieldingly engage the edge of the plate 12 so as to prevent accidental disengagement between the plates 12 a-nd 12.

The plate 12 is hingedly connected to the plate 12 as shown at 12, the hinge 12 being of the double hinge type so that the sash may be freely manipulated. The plate 12 is provided with a flange 19 and with lugs 21 to receive the edges of a plate 22, and the plate 12 is provided with a flange 19 and with lugs 21 to receive the flanges of a similar 'plate carried by the other sash. The frame 10 is preferably provided with metal guide strips to guide and keep the sash in perfect alinement.
The hinge plate 12 shown in Figure 10 of the drawings is provided with an outer flange 19, similar to the flange shown in Figure 4 of the drawings, but in lieu of the lugs 21, this plate is provided with a flange 21 which is located between the ears 14 The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is A hinge adapted to connect a pair of relatively movable members comprising an attaching plate adapted to be secured to one of said members and having an opening therein, a plate also having an opening therein and hingedly secured to the attaching plate and adapted to be positioned within the opening of said attaching plate flush with the face of the latter, guide lugs carried by the hingedly secured plate and extending beyond the face thereof, a second attaching plate adapted to be carried by the other relatively movable member to slidingly engage between the face of the hingedly secured plate and the lugs carried thereby, and a substantially L- shaped bolt guided in the second attaching plate and engaging within the opening of the hingedly secured plate.
