Description

April 93 c. GOHMANN 1,754,096
DOOR CONSTRUCTION FOR STOVE CASINGS Filed Feb 4, 1929 7 INVENTOR. 2/ C Yles L-Gohmann 9 A TTORNEY.
Patented Apr. 8, 1930 UNITED STATES CHARLES L. GOI-IMANN, on NEW ALBANY, iNDInNn, lrssreNon- T0 *GoHM-ANN BROS. AND KAHLER COMPANY, on NEW ALBANY, INDIANA, A conroRATroN or INDIANA DOOR CONSTRUCTION FOR STOVE CASIl l'G-S Application filed February 4, fate. serial No. ames.
This invention relates to stove casings or shells and more particularly to the doors usually carried by the front panel thereof. So far as I am aware, stove casings of this general class have not heretofore been provided with sliding doors, such, by way of example, as the door construction shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing.
The object of my invention is to provide an entirely new construction of doors for stove casings and the like, which is simple, efficient, economical to manufacture, easy to operate and when opened entirely disappear behind the front panel of the stove casing. With that end in View, the invention contemplates the provision of sliding doors, located directly behind the front panel of the shell or casing and which may be fully closed, or fully opened, for the purpose of gaining access to the stove, mounted within the casing.
Another object of my invention is that when the doors are moved to opened position they do not extend outwardly from the casing but are hidden or concealed behind the casing and permit a maximum opening in the casing.
The invention consists in the construction, combination, location and arrangement of parts, as herein set forth and claimed.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a stove casmg equipped with my novel doors, which doors are shown in the closed position;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the front panel of the stove casing viewed from the 111- side and which clearly shows the invention, one of the sliding doors being partly broken away to more clearly show one opening in the front panel;
Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the front panel taken on a plane corresponding to line 33 of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment of my invention as illustrated and which shows a preferred construction, I provide a metal casing or shell 1, for heating stoves and the like, and the invention has to do only with the front panel 2 of said shell 1. Generally, the front panel 2 ofthe casing 1 is provided with a fuel opening 3 and an opening 4:, the latter being for the purpose is closed by doors 7 and 8, which doors are l siidably mounted upon rods 9 behind panel 2.
Referring to the doors 5 and "'6, which are adapted to close the opening 3', it will be clearly seen, by examination of Fig. 2, that said doors are adapted to move in unison by their 9 connection with one another through chains 10. (his end of each of the chains f0 securely attached to the upper *edge 5 of door =5 and the other end "of "each of the chains 10 is securely attached to the sides of dooi 6 any suitable manner as, for er ample, by screws ll. Pulleys 12am rota'tably earned lay-brackets 13, said brackets being Securely fixed to the upper edge of front panel 2 by bolts 14.
The chains 1 0 are adapted to be passed over the pulleys 1-2, as elem-1y shown in Fig. 2, and upper door 5 is provided with knobs or handles 15, as clearly shown in Figs. land 8.
The lower doors 7 and 8 are also slidably mounted upon rods 9 andare con-nectedto one another by chains 16, whichcha ins are reoeived over pulleys 17, the said pulleys being rotatably mounted within brackets '18. The brackets 18 are rigidly attacli'ed to the inner-surface 2" of front panel 2 i'n any suitable manner and are provided with angular ears 18 which ears are adapted to receive and support the lower portion of rods 9. The upper end of, the rods 9 are received and supported by the brackets The operation of my novel door construction is as follows:
Assume that doors 5 and 6 are in the closed position, as shown in Fig. 1, thereby closing the opening 3 of front panel 2 and that the doors 7 and 8 are also in the closed position, thereby closing the opening 4 in said front panel 2. To open the doors 5 and 6, thereby uncovering the opening 3, simply grasp knobs 15, mounted upon upper door 5 and push upwardly towards the top 19 of casing or shell 1. This upward movement of the knobs 15 causes door 5 to be slid upwardly on the rods 9 and the door 6 to be slid downwardly upon 5 rods 9 towards the bottom 20 of easing 1. To
close the doors 5 and 6, simply pull downwardly on knobs 15, thereby sliding the door 5 downwardly upon rods 9 and as the door 5 is slid downwardly on rods 9 the door 6 is 10 simultaneously drawn upwardly upon said rods 9 by chains 10.
The doors 7 and 8 are operated in the same manner as the doors 5 and 6. To open the doors 7 and 8, simply grasp knobs 21 and pull upwardly towards the top 19 of easing 1. To
closethe doors 7 and 8, simply push downwardly on knobs 21, thereby lowering the door 7 and simultaneously raising the door 8, thus closingthe opening 4 in the front 20 panel 2 of easing 1.
It will be understood that certain changes and modifications of the invention can be .made without departing from the scope or spirit vthereof as defined in the claims.
,VVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a stove casing having a door opening therein, a pair of doors adapted to close said opening, a pair of rods mounted adja- V cent said casing upon which said doors are slidably mounted, a pulley adjacent the top of each rod, a pair of chains each connected to said doors, respectively, and passing over said pulleys, respectively, and means whereby said doors may be drawn to open or closed position as desired. 7
2. The combination of a stove casing having an opening therein, vertically arranged doors slidably mounted behind said casing and adapted to close said opening, and means operatively connecting said doors with each other whereby they are adapted to move in unison and in opposite directions.
3. In combination with the front panel of a stove casing having a plurality of openings therein, a pair of vertically arranged doors adapted to close,each opening, means for sliding each pair of doors comprising a chain fastened to the upper door, a pulley over which said chain is passed, the other end of said chain being attached to the lower door, and a vertically disposed guide rod adapted to pass through all of said doors to keep them in alinement.
