HEAT REGISTER AND CUT-OFF FOR AIR-HEATING SYSTEMS.
Application filed May 19,
This invention relates generally to registers for hot air heating systems and aims to providea deviceof this character that is so constructed as to permit the heat to be directed into the room at various angles and also toprovide means whereby the heat may be entirely or partially out 01f whenever desired. 1 v
In carrying out thefpresent' invention there is provided a register including a register frame for disposition within a furnace floor heat box that is arranged within the 'house flooring and within which frame is arranged a grilled framethat has attachment with a collapsible pipe section ofelbow formation when extended. Thegrilled frame being pivoted to the register frame so that the same may be swung upwardly to the desiredposr tion. When so swung in an upward direction the collapsible pipe section will be extended and will afford means for diverting the heat through the frame and thisregardless of the position of the same with respect to the register frame. a Furthermo-re there is ilocated withinithe lower end of the furnace floor heat box a control valve that maybe operated at the floor surface to permit the heat tobe totally or partially out off. J One of the most important objects of this invention resides in the provision of astructure of this character that is extremely simple and highly efiicient in operation and one that may be arranged within the flooring'without requiring any alterations thereof other than a that usually required in the installation of ahot air heat register. a V p In the drawings [herein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary floor plant device within which is arranged myimproved device. Y
Figure2 is a detail section therethrough,
the collapsible pipe section to whichthe grilled frame is attached being extended. a
Figure 3 is a side elevation of-the control valve unit per se p j Figure 4: is an enlarged fragmentary section through the collapsible elbow; pipe sec tion, and v i Figure 5 is thereof.
Now having particular reference to the I a section as'in Figure'Q. a fragmentary-top plan VlQW' 1927; Serial No. 192,625.
box 5 andthe opening in the flooring as vdisclosed in Figuresl andQ. Pivotally mounted at its forward edge within this register frame (ibyreason of pintles, 8--8 at the opposite ends {thereof is a grilled register frame 9. Arrangedaround the back and side edges of the register frame (5 at the inner side thereof and slightly beneath the upper side is a flange .10 for supporting the edge of the grilled frame 9* when the same is lowered into the frame 6. 1 V I i 'lhefinventionfurther consists of a collapsiblo pipe section 11 of elbow formation when extendech'said collapsible pipe consisting of a plurality 'of, similarly designed sections, each of which isdesignated '12; Each section consistsof a back wall 13 and a pair of side walls 14, the back wall thereof being of curvilinear formation, whilethe opposite Figure 2. From'the inner tothe outersections, said sections are of gradually increasing area so that theymayhave overlapping relation as also indicated in Figures 2, 4t, and
5.; The. rear. edge of the innermost section 12 is flanged at 15'for engaging beneath the interior flange'of the register frame Gto limit the outward swinging movement of the elbow pipe with respect to said register frame.
i Theouter endsof the side walls of allthe sections 12- are \pivotally connected to the forward edge of the grilled frame 9 beneath its surface as at 16 in Figure 2. j
Tolimitthe slidingtmovementof the sections with respect to each other, all of the a 7 sections with the exception of the innermost one are formed attheir backwalls and adjacentitheir opposite ends with slots;17- 17 for receiving pins 1818upon the forward edges of the backwalls of the next adjacent sections with the exception ofthe outermost The forward edge of is rivetedybolted, or otherwise secured to the grilled frame 9 as at,19 so that when said the foremost section grilled frame is swung upwardly with respect to the register frame 6, the collapsible pipe section 11 will be extended.
Arranged within the innermost'section' 12 of this collapsible pipe isa cross strap formedadjacent one end with a slot 21. Pivoted to the adjacent end of thegrilled frame 9 is a curved latch lever 22, the outer edge of which is for nediwith spaced slots 23 for engagement with the forward end of the slot 21 in the strap 20. It being obvious from Figure 2 that the inner end of this latch lever is slida'bly arranged through the slot 21; Thus by raising the grilled frame to any one of four positions to extend the Collapsible pipeosection 11 it may be maintained in said position by engaging the proper notch 23 of the lever with the end ofthe slot, 21 in the strap 20. The adjacent side of the register frame 6 is. notched 'as at 24-so that the lever 22 may slide therethrough during the raising and lowering of the grilledframe 9. Furthermore, by swinging the lever 22 rearward- 'ly, the frame may be lowered at will. i
'achain pulley 29. I ley' 29 the box-5 is formed at its upper end Arranged within tliefurnace floor or heat boxfiadjacent the lower end thereof, and which lowerfen'd portion 25 Lis of rounded configuration is a damper valve supporting ring 26*formedat opposed points and at its outer surface with bosses 27--27 that are arranged through opposed Y openings in the lower rounded end of said box 5. Loosely mounted through these. bosses 2727 are pintles 28-28attached at opposed points to the periphery of a circular damper valve 29. ()ne of these pintles 28 extends-considerably outwardly of the box 5 and is equipped with Directly above this pulwith a pulley 30, the top of which extends throughan opening-31 in the flange 7 of the "register frame 6. Trained'over these pulleys is'an endless chain 32 and obviously by turning the uppermost pulley 31, the damper valve 29 may be opened orclosed tothe desired extent.- I a -Having communication with the lower -rounded" end of the box 5 is theusual'heat pipe 33.
It-will thus be seenthat I have provided a highly novel, simple and efficiently operating heat 'registei' and ,controlyalve thatis well adapted forall the purposes heretofore 'designated,=aiid even thouglrl have herein shown and described thein'vention as consisting of certain detail structural elements it is nevertheless to be imderstood that I some changes may be madetherein within the spirit and scope of the-appendedclaims,
Having thus described the inventiom what I' Cla11112IS -11GW 1SI' I 1.
