Abstract

A window closure assembly includes a window frame and a venetian blind section having a frame which is pivotally mounted at its upper edge within the window frame so that it may be moved to positions within and without the window frame. Operating means for the venetian blind louvers permit them to be selectively moved to open, closed, raised and lowered positions. Double glass doors are hinged to the side members of the window frame and may be moved to open or close the entire window.

DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION My invention provides a window closure including parts which may be moved to a number of different positions in order to provide different controls for light and air within a room in the wall of which the window is installed. Because of the variety of positions which the parts of the window may occupy the window is ideally suited for use in climates of extreme heat or cold, because parts of the window may be adjusted to fully opened, fully closed, or a variety of intermediate positions in order to accommodate the window to changing conditions of temperature and light.
The window provided by the invention has three basic parts or elements, which are the frame, glass doors which may be moved to opened and closed positioned, and a venetian blind section. The parts may be made of various materials such as wood, metal or synthetic plastics. When the parts are fully closed they provide a positive vapor seal which is very useful for interior air conditioning and, in addition, effectually prevents burglarizing.
In the drawings forming part of this application the window frame is indicated at 2 and comprises a rectangular frame formed of side members 4 and upper and lower members 6, 8 which define a central open space. The first of the closure members provided by the invention consists of two glass doors 10, 12 each of which is supported on side hinges 14 to be moved to fully open, fully closed and intermediate positions. These doors are shown particularly in FIGS. 1 and 7 and it will be seen that in the preferred embodiment of the invention they are of such size that when in fully closed positions they meet at the vertical center line of the frame and abut a vertical central member 16 to which they may be latched by suitable means 18.
The second closure member provided by the invention is a venetian blind structure which is normally mounted wihtin the front and rear boundaries of the window frame as clearly shown in FIGS. 4 and 5. This section of the window closure consists of a rectangular supporting frame 20 which may be moved to and from a position outside the frame, and which includes louvers which may be moved to raised, lowered, and intermediate positions, to an open position outside the window frame, and in both of these positions the louvers may be opened or closed.
As shown in FIG. 2 the venetian blind section comprises a rectangular frame 20 within which there are mounted a plurality of horizontal louvers 22. As shown in FIG. 8 each louver is supported in frame 20 by a shaft 24 at each of its ends, each of which extends outwardly longitudinally of the louver, providing a pivotal support for the louver, and an operating rod which is mounted.
The louver frame 20 is mounted at its upper end on and within the window frame 2 by means of horizontal hinges 30, as most clearly shown in FIGS. 4 and 5 and, by means of these hinges the louver frame may be moved from a position within the window frame, as shown in FIG. 4, to a position inclined to the window frame and outside it, as shown in FIG. 5. A pivoted latch and support means is provided for holding the louver frame in its opened position and consists of two pivotally connected arms 32, 34 which are pivotally connected at their ends to the window frame and the louver frame respectively, so that when the louver frame is within the window frame these arms are in folded position, as shown in FIG. 4, and when the louver frame is in its opened position the arms are extended, holding the louver frame out of the window frame.
Means are provided by the invention for raising and lowering the louvers of the venetian blind section, and such means are particularly shown in FIGS. 6 and 7 of the drawings. These means comprise a cord 40 carried by the venetian blind frame and one end of which is connected to a rotatable shaft 42 which may be rotated by a handle 44 to wind and pull the cord. From shaft 42 the cord extends upwardly and is trained around one pulley 46 of a double pulley and downwardly therefrom to be connected to the lowest of the venetian blinds at 48 at one end thereof. The cable also extends about the second pulley 50 of the double pulley arrangement (see FIG. 7) and thence across the top of the venetian blind frame, about a pulley and thence downwardly to be connected at its end to the lowest venetian blind at point 52, which is at the opposite end of that blind from point 48. It will be seen that by rotating the handle 42 the cord 40 will be wound about the shaft 42 thereby raising the cable sections 41a and 41b to raise the louvers of the venetian blind. Because the shaft 42, the pulleys 46, 50 and 52 and the cord 40 are all mounted on the venetian blind frame 20, and not on the window frame 2, the louvers may be raised and lowered or moved to any intermediate position regardless of whether the venetian blind section is within the window frame, as shown in FIG. 4, or extended therefrom as shown in FIG. 5.
Means are provided by the invention for rotating the louvers of the venetian blind section about their pivotal supports to open, closed and intermediate positions. such means are particularly shown in FIGS. 8 and 9 and comprise such means as a rod 60 which is mounted in vertical position within the venetian blind frame for up and down longitudinal movement. This rod is connected along its length by levers 62 to each of the pivotal support shafts 24 for the individual louvers, whereby longitudinal movement of the rod will simultaneously rotate all of the louvers to a desired position. The rod 60 is eccentrically connected to a rotatable operating shaft 64 which may be rotated by a removable crank 66 whereby the rod is moved longitudinally upon rotation of the crank 66 and shaft 64.
it will be seen from the foregoing description that l have provided a window closure having a number of selective positions and conditions in order to provide an almost infinite variety of controls for the light and air coming into a room If complete closure is desired the glass doors l0, 12 may be closed and the louvers of the venetian blind section moved to closed position. If maximum axis of light and air is desired the doors l0, 12 may be opened and the venetian blind louvers raised to maximum height. If air, but reduced light, is desired the glass doors will be opened, the venetian blind section moved to its inclined position outside the window frame and the louvers moved to their closed position. Other possible positions and conditions of the sections and parts provided by the invention will be apparent without further description.
I claim:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a window closure for a wall opening, comprising a window frame having front and rear surfaces and the size and shape to fit in the wall opening, two transparent doors movably mounted on vertical hinges at the sides of the window frame to open or close the entire opening of the front of the window frame, a second frame having the same shape and substantially the same size as the interior of the window frame whereby it will snugly but movably fit within the interior of the window frame, the second frame being hinged at its upper end to the window frame between the front and rear surfaces thereof whereby it is normally in a depending vertical position between such front and rear surfaces and may be moved to a position within and inclined to the window frame with its lower part outside the window frame, a plurality of parallel horizontal louvers which are individually rotatably mounted in the second frame, means carried by the second frame for raising and lowering the louvers, and means carried by the second frame for rotating the louvers to open and closed positions.

Claims (1)

1. As a new article of manufacture, a window closure for a wall opening, comprising a window frame having front and rear surfaces and the size and shape to fit in the wall opening, two transparent doors movably mounted on vertical hinges at the sides of the window frame to open or close the entire opening of the front of the window frame, a second frame having the same shape and substantially the same size as the interior of the window frame whereby it will snugly but movably fit within the interior of the window frame, the second frame being hinged at its upper end to the window frame between the front and rear surfaces thereof whereby it is normally in a depending vertical position between such front and rear surfaces and may be moved to a position within and inclined to the window frame with its lower part outside the window frame, a plurality of parallel horizontal louvers which are individually rotatably mounted in the second frame, means carried by the second frame for raising and lowering the louvers, and means carried by the second frame for rotating the louvers to open and closed positions.
