Description

N. R RI ERS WRENCH Filed April 2, 1928 INVE TOR. l/a wo awfiiiwer k B ATTORNEY.
Patented Apr. 191% r l NAZPOLEON R. RIVERS, F ASI-ITAIBULA, OHIO WRENCH Application filed April 2, 1928. Serial No. 266,797.
This invention relates to the class of tools wherein like numerals of reference indicate and pertains partlcularly to a wrench. corresponding parts throughout the several The primary ob ect of the present invenviews, the wrench structure which is inclitlon is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter cated as a whole by the numeral 1 comprises set forth, a wrench of a design capable of as shown a pair of handle shanks 2 and 3 eacli 5.;
being qulck ly ad usted totake an article of of which is relatively long. These handle any s ze w1th1n certa n limlts, without the sections are arranged in juxta position and necessity of mampulatmg holding devlces of have their opposing and contacting faces fiat any character, I as shown. At one end of each of the mem- Another object of the invention is to 13 bers 2 and 3 there is formed the heads 4 and vide, 1n a manner as herelnafter set forth, a 5 respectively each of which heads are relaqurck ad ustable wrench in the make up of tively br d a d i th present i t as which there are no removable parts or parts shown is substantially semi-circular. to be manipulated, thereby giving a tool It is of course to be understood that appliwh1ch, because of the ease with Whl h i c n cant does not limit himself to ahead structure be ad usted to take a nut 0r simllar artl l of semi-circular formation but merely shows and because of the fact that there are no parts this form for illustrative purposes. a to be lost, will greatly expedite the pcrforrrh The heads 4: and 5 carry, respectively, the
0 ance of workmg operatlons. jaw members 6 and 7, each aw section being 2 A stlll further object of the invention 1s 0 mounted upon its respective head and at one provide a wrench of the above descrlbe C side thereof so that when the handle shanks acter which will be strong and durable, and 2 and 3 are placed in side by side relation comparatively inexpensive to manufacture th w ki faces 8 Of th j ill b and set up. posed.
The invention will be best understood from E h f th j ti 6 and 7 is f a '52 a consideration of the following detailed dethickness substantially equal to the thickness scription taken in connection with the acof the two handle members and each therecompanying drawing forming a part of the fore has one side extending a substantial dispresent invention, with the understanding, tance beyond one face of its supporting head however, that the invention is not confined thus forming the projecting shoulder 9 which so to any strict conformity with the showing of overlies and slides upon the top of the head the drawing but may be changed or modified of the adjacent handle shank as is clearly so long as such changes or modifications mark illustrated in Figure 2.
,3 no material departure from the salient fea- The two members of the wrench structure 5 tures of the invention as expressed in the apare held in adjustable relation by a clove-tail S5 d d l i connection, one face of one member, as for In the drawing: example the member 2 being provided, upon Figure 1 shows the wrench structure emthe inner face, preferably across the head bodying the present invention in side elevathereof, with the transversely extending tion. dovetail ribs 10, the opposing face of the Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the other member being provided with receiving wrench showing the same opened to its fulldove-tailed slots or grooves 11. The two est extent. members are thus permitted to move lateral- Figure 3 is a view in edge elevation of the ly with respect to one another but are held wrench structure. against respective longitudinal movement.
Figure 4: is a sectional view taken substan- In order to limit the degree of movement tially upon the line 4.-l of Figure 8. of the two members which make up the Figure 5 is a transverse section taken upon wrench structure the head of one member, as
the line 55 of Figure 1. for example the head 4 is provided with or Referrlng now to the drawing in detail carries an mwardly extending movement limiting pin 12 which projects into a slot 13 formed in the inner face of the opposing head member 5, this slot extending substantially half way across the head face as clearly shown in Figure 5 of the drawing.
The slot 13 is arranged outwardly of and in parallel relation to one of the grooves 11, and it opens at its inner side through the outer wall of such groove. The inner wall of'the slot 13 constitutes a stop with which n the pin 12 cooperates to limit the opening movement of the doors 6 and 7.
From the foregoing it will be readily seen that the bringing together of the jaw sections 6 and 7 limits the relative movement of the two members of wrench in one direction and the contacting of the pin with the inner end of slot 13 limits the movement of the members in the opposite direction or in opening movement.
Having thus described my invention what Iclaimis:
'A wrench comprising a'pair ofelongated sliding bodies arranged in contact with each other, jaws carried by correspondin ends of the bodies and extending longitu inally and inwardly from the same, one body being provided with transversely extending dovetail grooves and with-a slot having its inner end closed, the slot being arranged outward- ].y of and arallel to one of said grooves and opening t rough the bottom wall of such groove, dove-tail ribs extending transversely of the other body and slidably arranged in said grooves, and a pin extending through said other body into said slot and cooperating with the end wall thereof to limit the opening movement of the aws. V
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
