.To all whom it Wtcty concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES ALFRED HUNTON, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Gloucester House, 2 Bishopsgate Street Without, London, England, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in the Construction of l/Vrenc es or Spanners, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to construct a wrench or spanner specially applicable for use with automobiles and machinery, whereby the adjustment and move ment of the wrench or spanner can be effected with one hand, the wrench or spanner being ofgreat strength.
My invention will be clearly understood from the examples shown in the annexed drawings, in which' Figure 1 is a side elevation of a spanner or wrench with the jaws in an opened-out condition and engaging a nut. Fig. 2 is an elevation of part of the spanner or wrench from the opposite side. Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. 1, but with the jaws closed. Fig. 4 is a back edge View of the spanner or wrench. Fig. 5 is a bottom end view. Fig. 6 is an elevation, and Fig. 7 a section on the line a a of Fig. 6 of a modified form of spanner or wrench. Fig. 8 is an opposite side elevation with the jaws open, and Fig. 9 a section on line b b, Fig. 8, of the spanner shown in Fig. 6.
For the purpose of this invention I form the wrench or spanner from two shanks 1 2, both being dovetailed together, as at Figs. 5, 7, and 9, along the whole or part of their length, the outer surfaces of the shanks 1 2 when together forming a surface by which a firm and easy, grip and adjustment is obtained without injuring the hand.
The shank 1 carries the tenon 3, and the shank 2 the mortise 4 but such arrangement can be reversed, and such tenon 3 preferably extends up to the jaw 5, so that the two shanks are held together completely along their length.
According to Figs. 1 to 4 the meeting faces of the two shanks are on the flat, so that edges 6 are at the edges of the spanner or wrench; but at Figs. 6 to 9 one side of the mortise and tenon extends to one side or face of the spanner-stem and the other to the edge.
The shank 1 on the inside from the bottom is grooved or drilled for the reception of a screw-threaded rod 7, which is fixed to the shank 1 by a screw or screws 8 or pin or otherwise.
Each shank 1 2 is provided with a slot 9 10, the one, 1, having the screw-threaded rod 7 with a long slot 10, and the other, 2, with a slot 9 of a size to retain or fit a milled or other screw-nut 11, which engages the screwed rod 7 and is of a size that it fits the slots 9 10 and projects slightly on either side of the spanner or wrench, as at Fig. 4, to enable easy manipulation of same for adjusting the jaws 5 12 of the spanner.
The jaw-surfaces 5 12 of the shanks for engaging a bolt or nut are situate at. an angle other than a right angle fromthe shanks, so that a proper manipulation among the machinery can be effected, and by making the lower jaw 12 longer than the upper jaw 5 a nut can be gripped fully on two sides, as seen at Fig. 1.
The two shanks 1 2 are slidable together along their dovetail joint, and by reason of the dovetailing a perfect and solid resistance to the strain on the jaws is insured along the shanks.
To assemble the parts, the shanks 1 2 are joined and the jaws 5 12 are placed together, the milled nut 11 is dropped into place through the long slot 10 of the shank 1 and rests in the small recess or slot 9 of the other shank 2. The screw-threaded rod 7 is then passed up the groove or grooves or hole formed from or in the end of the shank 1, passed through the milled or other nut and secured to the long slotted shank by a cross screw or screws 8 or pin, so that on the turning of the nut 11 it will revolve in the small slot of the shank 2 and by the travel along the screw move the shank 2 to adjust the jaws 5 12. The jaws may be thin or of the full or greater thickness of the spanner or wrench.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
