CALIFOBNIA, A CORPORATION OF CALIFQRN'IA Application filed October 13, 1928. Serial No. 312,309.
The invention relates to improvements in bathing suits, and has for its primary object the provision of an improved garment of this character which is highly efficient in use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a garment of this character having an improvedseat construction so adapted and arranged as toendow the garment with improved facilit for fitting the human form.
Another ob ect of the invention is the provision of a garment of the character named, so constructed and arranged as to be durable and satisfactory in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which Fig. 1 is a front view of a bathing suit em bodying the invention.
Fig. 2, a front view of the lower portion thereof, with the lower portion of the skirt broken away and shown in section so as to reveal the underlying parts.
Fig. 3, a rear view similar to F1g. 2.
Fig. 4, a section taken substantlally on hne 44 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5, a section 5-5 of Fig. 2.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a body member 6, which, in general, may be of any usual or desired construction or arrangement, formed of knit material having the ribs thereof running vertically or longitudinally, as shown, so as to provide a considerable hor zontal or lateral expansibility, and little if any vertical or longitudinal expansiblllty. The body portion 6 comprises a usual form of skirt 7 enclosing the'usual form of leg members 8, all of said parts being formed of knlt material with the ribs running vertically or longitudinally. Substantially the entire seat portion of the garment is formed of a separate seat member 9 formed of knit material, and having its ribs running horizontally or laterally, as indicated. To efiectthis an taken substantially on line best understood by opening is provided in the garment body embracing substantially the entire seat portion thereof and'running into the crotchport-ion thereof and a seat member 99 is inserted in said opening to constitute the seat and crotch portion of the garment. As shown, the seat portion is made somewhat larger than the opening of the body of the garment, and is provided with upwardly and outwardly flaring edges. Pleats 10 are formed along the edges of the seat member 9, as shown. As is well known, knit material has considerable elasticity, Or expansibilitymrossing at right angles to the ribs of the knit material, but
comparatively littleelasticity, or expansibility, in the longitudinal direction of the ribs. By this arrangement, therefore, the seat por-' tion of the garment will be given comparatively great vertical or longitudinal elasticity, due to the arrangement of the ribs, thereby adapting the garment to fit the peculiarity of the human form without undue stretching and straining thereof. The pleats 10 at the edges of the seat portion provide for horizontal or lateral expansibility, which, in conjunction with the natural horizontal or lateral elasticity in the knit portions of the front and sides of the leg portion s'8, will amply provide for they necessary lateraly expansibility of the garment in use. By this arrangement, a garment is provided especially adapted and arranged to fit properly the human form through the hip portions thereof without undue straining of the garmentduring use.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying the invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departfore do not wish to be limited to the precise details disclosed, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus full described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A bathing suit comprising a body of knit material having its ribs running vertically throughout its upper body portions, and I 1ng from the spirit of the invention. I therethroughout the front and sides of the body portion, there being an opening in said body embracing the seat portion thereof, said opening having upwardly and outwardly flaring edges; and a separate seat portion of knit material, having its ribs running horizontally, larger than and inserted and secured at its edges in said opening there being upwardly and outwardly flaring pleats formed 10 at each side of saidseat portion to give h0rizontal expansibility thereto. i a
