Description

March 25, 1930. F. RIEHLE l1,751,885
RECORD CARD AND COVER THEREFOR Filed Dec. 22, 1926 Patented Mar. 25, 1930 PATENT OFFICE FRANZ BIEHLE, OF STUTTGART, GERMANY 'RECORD CARD AND COVER THEREFOB Application iled December 22, 1926, Serial No. 156,327, and in Germany December28, 1925.
The present invention has for its object the production ofl covers for slidable index members, records or cards. It relates more particularly, however, to such slidable index cards or records in which certain inter-related numerical data can be quickly ascertained by displacement ina cover of a slidable member provided with the requireditabulated numbers or series of numbers. The relevant numbers are then simultaneously visible through perforations or openings in the cover, these perforations being so arranged that only the numbers associated with one another can be seen collectively.
Hitherto these perforations were stamped out of the cover. This has, however, the disadvantage that the stamped out portions do not assume the proper osition with sufficient exactitude or at yeast considerable care was necessary in the stamping out process which latter necessitates a considerable waste of time. Moreover the production of the numerous stampings which are associated with each slidable index member, record or card-as are required for example in many industries is troublesome and uneconomical on account of the proportionately small quantity required.
The record card and cover consist in that 80 a cover consistin of transparent material as for example ceuloid is used and that the said cover is rendered non-transparent in any suitable manner but not at certain places at which the numerals of the slidable cards are to be visible the result being a transparent portion or window. This non-transparency can be eii'ected in any suitable manner as by the application of a coating as for example a. coloured coating which can for example,
40 be imprinted thereon or otherwise applied.
Finally the explanatory text is then added by printing or in any other suitable manner and thereafter the `cover is ready for use.
The device is shown on the accompanying drawing which shows diagrammatically and by way of example a cover and card slidable therein and in accordance with the present invention.
Figure 1 shows in plan a finished slidable card in accordance with the present invention, the card being partially withdrawn.
Figures 2 to 4 show in plan the several parts of the cover and card.
The slidable index card whose cover a is produced according to the present invention is per se of the usual form and contour as found most suitable for the purpose intended. It consists of a cover a and a suitable card b slidable in the said cover, the said card bearing the numbers or indicia c of the different data. The numbers c standing in relation to one another are visible at certain places d through the cover a.
According to the resent invention the portions d are Vnow ma e visible in such manner that the cover a produced from a transparent material for example celluloid, Figure 2, is covered with a coating of colour e which thereby imparts nontransparency to portions of the Celluloid. The coating or covering which may be applied in any suitable manner leaves the parts d clear or transparent which therefore appear as windows or transparent portions so that the numbers are visible through these transparent portions.
The other text pictures or indicia f are now printed, Figure 4, and the process is then finished.
The colour coating and the cover a as well as the material may be of any suitable material. Similarly in place of the colour any other coating substance may be used whichl adheres to the material of the cover a and imparts a coating or covering thereto.
What I claim is A device of the character described comprising a cover having two open edges and composed of front and back portions secured together at two other edges, said cover being composed of a transparent material having a coating thereon leaving parts thereof uncoated forming transparent portions; and a. card slidable inV said cover through the open edges thereof and having indicia thereon 5 visible through the transparent portions of the cover, saidfront and back portions also having indicia thereon, whereby by slidably adjusting the card in the cover the card is positioned to indicate the desired indicia -u thereon through the transparent portions in cooperation with the indicia on the cover.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
FRANZ RIEHLE.
