INDEX DEVICE.

This invention relates to ycard indexes and more particularly to card indexes of the type in which a plurality of units are mounted in an upright frame in overlapping relationship so that the lower margins of the cards are visible and so that the cards may be swung apart todisplay the data on the overlapping port-ions, and objects of the invention are to provide an index device having the new and/ improved features of construe t-ion and arrangement hereinafter described. The invention is illustrated in one of the preferred forms in the accompanying drawings in which: Fig. l is a face view of an index unit constructed in accordance with the invention;

The embodiment of the invention illus-v trated comprises a card holder 1 of cardboard or relatively stiff paper to the upper margin of which is flexibly connected a supporting rail 2 which` projects beyond the ends of the holder and is adapted `to extend into guide channels in a suitable supporting frame thereby to hold the unit in place. Detachably connected to the holder 1 is a sheet 3 which may be of relatively iiexible paper or other suitable material, the upper margin of which extends slightly below the supporting rail 2 and the upper corners extending through diagonal slots 4 in the holder 1.

The lower margin of the sheet 3 is folded upon itself thereby providing an integral folded portion 5 extending substantially parallel to the sheet 3. Enclosing the' folded margin 'of the sheet 3 and the margin of the holder 1 isa sheath 6 of transparent sheet material, such as celluloid, which is formed from a sheet of such material folded upon itself along one longitudinal margin to formfront and rear walls which are yieldingly urged toward each other owing to the resiliency of the material. The opposite ends of the frontand rear walls ofthe sheath are fastened to the holder 1 by staples 7 thereby preventing relative movement between the sheath and holder. As indicated in Fig. 3 the folded portion 5 of the sheet 3 extends a slight distance above the sheath 6 and provides a pocket with the sheet for the recep-v tion of a card 8 which is shorter. and of less width than that of the holder l anda different height and Width lthan sheet 3, thus to enable the card readily to be grasped for removal from the pocket, the upper corners of the card being adapted to extend into diagonal slots 4a in the holder 1.

In order visibly to indicate the presence or absence of the card 8 in the pocket without swinging one unit away from the adjacent unit, an aperture 9 on. the folded portion 5 is arranged to register with an area l0 on the sheet 3 which area may be colored differently from the card 8. Thus, forY example by coloring the area 10 black and the card 8 pink, the color pink will show through the opening 9 when the card is in place but when the card is removed the `colorblack will show through the opening. In this manner a user may. quickly and easily determine the presence or absence of the card in the unit.

An index device of the character described may-be usedto advantage in a variety of situations.' Thus, by way of example the card S-may be used as a'salesmans follow-l up and report card which may be carried by salesmen when making a call upon a prospective customer, and may contain such 1nv dicia as fully to identify the prospect as well as the progress of the salesman with the l prospect. The subject matter onthis card may be copied on the sheet 3 so that when the salesmans card is out the index still contains the desired information, this being particularly advantageous in the event of the salesmans card being lost or mislaid. The folded portion 5 of t-he sheet 3 may contain suitable symbols indicative of the various articles on sale and a suitably colored signal 11 which may be of transparent sheet celluloid having an opening 12 may be` placed overthe'symbol designating the particular article in which the prospect is interested. Thus, by glancing at the index the user will not only be informed as to the'article in which the prospect is interested, but also whether the salesman is makin a call.

A cardinal feature of the invention con-A area on the sheet is advantageous to signal the presence or absence of the card in the pocket without manipulation of the index.

While the index device herein shown and described is admirably adapted to fulfill the requirements, it is to be understood that it is not intended to confine the invention to the one form of embodiment herein disclosed, for it is susceptible to embodiment in various forms all coming within the scope of the claims which follow. The term colors is used in a broad sense to connote contrasting hues or shades whether actually colored or white. black, gray, etc.

I claim:- l

l. An index device comprising a card holder, a sheath of transparent sheet mate-- rial enclosing a margin of said holder, and a sheet having a folded margin extending into said sheath, said folded portion and sheet forming a ypocket for the reception of an index card.

2. An index device comprising a card holder, a sheath of transparent sheet material enclosing a margin of said holder, a sheet having a folded margin extending into said sheath, the free end of the folded portion extending a slight ldistance above the sheath.

An index device comprising a card holder, a sheath of transparent sheet material enclosing a margin of said holder, a sheet having a folded margin extending into said sheath, the folded portion an sheet 'forming a pocket, and a card in sai-d pocket, said card being of less width than the sheet. l

An index device comprising a card holder, a sheath of transparent sheet matef rial enclosing a margin of said holder, a sheet having a folded marginv extending into said sheath, the folded portion of said sheet extending a slight distance above said sheath and having an aperture visible through said sheath, a colored area on the sheet arranged to register with said aperture, and a card between said sheet and folded portion, said card being colored differently from said colored area thereby visibly to indicate through said aperture the presence or absence of said card. f

7. An index device comprising a card holder, a sheath of transparent sheet material enclosing a margin of said holder, a

sheet having a folded margin extending into said sheath, the folded portion of said sheet extending a slight distance above said sheath and having an aperture visible through said sheath, said holder having slits to receive the corners of said sheet `remote from said sheath, a colored area on the sheet arranged to register with said aperture, and a card between said sheet and folded portion, said holder having slits to receive the corners of said card remote from said sheath, said card being colored differently from 'said' colored area thereby visibly to indicate through said aperture the presence or absence of said card.
