The invention relates to a toy or advertising novelty.
The objects of the invention are to provide an efficient, durable and practical device by practice with, or utilization of which, persons may become familiar with-operation of certain kinds of mechanism, vehicles, and the like, such as airplanes; and to provide a simple and economical construction of said de- 3;) vice.
The invention consists in the combinatio of the elements, arrangement of the parts and in the details of the construction, as hereinafter described and claimed. In the drawings:

Fig. 4 is a front elevational view of the rear piece with parts broken away.
In the preferred construction of the inv-cntion I provide the toy or practicing device 1 comprising the rectangular sheet material front piece 2 and the irregular formed sheet material rear piece 3. The front piece 2 has the curved slots or slits 4 and 5 in its upper to and lower ends 6 and 7, respectively. Intermediate the slots 4 and 5, and positioned adjacent the side edges 8 and 9, of the front piece, are the rectangular apertures or windows 10 and 11.
Intermediate the slot 5 and the lower edge 7 are the characters 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18, respectively. indicating the words warmup, take-off, climb, cruise, rightturn, descend and land which are the usual movements of an airplane attainable by predetermined operations of its engine throttle, the stick and the rudder. 3

The reproduction'22 projects through the slot 4, of thefront piece2, and is movable adjacent the front'surface 23 of the front piece, as by pivoting-around the pin 19. Integral with thebottom 24 of the rear piece 5 is the indicator 25, which projects through the slot 5, in the front piece 2, and is movable adjacent the front-surface 23 of the front piece 2,'when the rear piece is pivoted around the pin 19. The indicator 25 is adapted to register .with or point out the respective characters 12,13, 14, 15,16. 17 and 18.

The characters 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32 and 33 are positioned on the rear piece 3, and with respect to the window 10, in the front piece 2, and the locationof the indicator 25 and the characters 12, 13, 14,15,16,l7 and 18 whereby,when the point 34 of the indicator 25 registers with any-one of the characters 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 or 18, the character readable through the window 10 describes the manual operation ofthe engine throttle of an airplane to efiect the movement described by the character with which the point 34 of the indicator 25 registers.

The characters 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41 and 42 are positioned on the rear piece 3, and with respect to the window 11, in the front piece2, and the location of the indicator 25, the characters 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18 whereby when the point 34 of the indicator-25 registers with any one of the characters 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18, the character readable-through the window 11 describesthemanual operation of the stick or rudder of an airplane'to effect the movement described by the character with which the-point'34-of the indicator registers.

,spectively, to register with a character readable through the windows 10 and 11, thereby indicating to the operator that when it is desired to cruise an airplane the engine throttle should be open and the stick should be placed in neutral. Simultaneously. with movement of the indicator 25 in registering position with the character 15 the airplane reproduction 22 is leveled-out "the" indicating the natural position of an airplane when it is cruising.
' Assume'th'at an operator of the toy desires to-obtain information regarding the necessary manual operations of the controls of an airplaneito cause'the same to ascend into the air. The point 34' of theindicator is manually moved in registering position with the character 19 on the front piece 2. Simultaneously withmovement of the indicator the characters 27 and 42 on the rear piece 3 register with the windows 10 and 11, respectively, in the front piece and the airplane reproduction 22 assumes an upwardly and forwardly inclined position, thereby indicating to the operator of the toy that when the operator of an airplane performing a cruising movement desires to cause the airplane to ascend he manually-operates the engine throttle wide open and puts the stick back which causes the airplane to move forward in an upwardly and forwardly inclined position represented by the reproduction 22.
In Fig. 3 is shown a modification of the front pieceinwhich the characters 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17 are represented by the ahreviatiou t, r, c,r, and d.
It 1, therefore apparent that I have inventeda highly desirable toy or practicing device'which may be utilized for the purpose of familiarizing persons with the manual operation of the controls of airplanes to cause the airplanes to perform predetermined movements.
. Another advantage of the invention is that, since thedevice is made from sheet material, as paper, by means of suitable cutting dies, the same is so economically manufactured that it may headvantageously utilized and purchased by firms and persons who intend to imprint upon the front piece 2 their names and advertisements, for the purpose of giving the invention to interested persons who not only may familiarize themselves with the manual. operation of the controls of an airplane, but, also, such persons are informed of thename of the giver and the products he manufactures or sells.
a While I believe that theform of the invention illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferredembodiment, is efficient and practicable, yetrealizing-that the conditions concur- 1 of the advantages of the invention as defined in the claims.
Various changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts describe-d without departing from the invention and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details of the materials or the size and shape thereof as set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations that fall within the spirit and scope of the appended and final claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A toy, comprising a vertical front sheet having an aperture therein and having slits therein and having characters thereon, a vertical rear sheet having its upper and lower ends protruding through said slits and being movable with respect to said front sheet and having characters thereon adapted to register with said aperture and having indicating means adapted to register with said first mentioned characters and having an airplane reproduction thereon, said characters, aperture and indicating means being so positioned that manual movement of said indicating means in registration with any one of said first mentioned characters causes a corresponding character of said rear sheet to move in registration with said aperture, thereby indicating the manual operation of the controlling mechanism of an airplane necessary to effect the movement of said second mentioned airplane as indicated by said indicator, and means whereby the normal position of said first mentioned airplane corresponds with the position of the said second mentioned airplane when said last mentioned airplane performs movements described by the respective first mentioned characters with which said indicating means registers,
2. A toy, comprising a sheet having an aperture therein and having characters thereon, a sheet movable with respect to said first mentioned sheet and having characters thereon adapted to register with saidaperture and having indicating means adapted to register with said first mentioned characters and having an airplane reproduction thereon, said aperture and indicating means being so positioned that manual movement of said indicating means in registration with any one of said first mentioned characterscauses a corresponding character of said second mentioned sheet to move in registration with said aperture, thereby indicating the manual operation of the controlling mechanism of an airplane necessary to effect the movement of said second mentioned airplane as indicated by said indicator, and means whereby the normal position of said first mentioned airplane corresponds with the position of the said second mentioned airplane when said last mentioned airplane performs movements described by the respective first mentioned characters with which said indicating means registers.
3. A toy comprising a pair of sheets, one
of said sheets having an airplane imprinted thereon, an indicator on one of said sheets, and means whereby movement of said indicator indicates the position of the controls of an airplane to eiiect a predetermined movement of said secondmentioned airplane, and means whereby said first mentioned airplane assumes the position corresponding to the position of said second mentioned airplane when said'controls are operated as indicated by said indicator.
4:. A toy comprising a pair of sheets rotatably connected with each other, one of said sheets having a machine pictured thereon, and having a plurality of sets of characters describing the operation of manual controls of the machine and having an indicator thereon, the other of said sheets having a pluralityof apertures therein and having characters thereon describing the movements of said machine, whereby manual movement of said indicator in registering position with one of said movement describing characters causes the one set of said control describing characters to register with said apertures thereby indicating to the operator the position of said controls necessary to effect the movement of said machine described by the movement character with which said indicator is registered, said pictured machine adapted to be positioned corresponding to the machine position when the controls are operated as indicated by said set of characters re lstering with said apertures.
