. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HAMILTON E. SMITH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROTARY CHURNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,187, dated March 21, 1876; application filed September 15, 1875.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, HAMILTON E. SMITH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ohurns, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section. I V
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to certain improvements in churns, the object being to provide for regulating and controlling the temperature of the cream in the same, during the operation of churning, in a convenient and efficient manner; and it consists in a hollow chamber, preferabl y of a square or rectangular shape, with a flat bottom, in combination with the creamtub, said chamber forming a tempering-chamber and base or supportfor the cream-tub, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In thc'drawing, the letter A represents the tub of the churn, and G a hollow base or tempering-chamber, upon which the churn is mounted, the lower portion of said tub projecting a short distance only into said hollow base or tempering chamber, and seated so as to be immovable thereon. The tub and tempering-chamber are both made of metal, and the tub may be lined with porcelain, it desired. B represents a perforated rotary dasher mounted upon gudgeons a ajournaled in the ends of the tub, one of which extends through its journal, and is provided with a crank, b,
by means of which a rotary motion is imparted to the dasher. Said dasher consists of a blade of cast-iron, and may be enameled, if desired,
similarly to the inside of the tub. The hollow base 0 is provided with an aperture in its top just large enough to receive the lower portion of the tub A, and allow the convex portion'of its bottom to project therein, the tub being provided in the present example with feet for its support when seated or placed in position over the tempering-chamber. With in the tempering-chamber or base is arranged a lamp or series of lamps, or any other heating device, for heating the cream, so that the temperature of the same may be regulated and controlled at pleasure, or within which a cooling material or device may be placed to reduce the temperature in warm weather.
As thus constructed, the temperature of the cream can be regulated and controlled economically and efficiently, and, as only a portion of the tub is surrounded by the temperingchamber, there is little liability of the contents becoming overheated, as in the churns of this class entirely surrounded by a temperingchamber.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
The hollow chamber 0, constructed with a flat base and an opening in its top, in combination with the cream-tn) A, said hollow chamber forming a tempering-chamber and a support or base for the cream-tub, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 8th day of September, 1875.
HAMILTON E. SMITH.
