One object of the invention is to provide a deviceof the character described having a signal, and improved means including a cylinder and piston to guidingly actuate the 6 signal.
Anothenpbject of the invention is theprovision of a device of the nature set forth comprising a signal and improved means-to oscillate the same.
A further object of the invention is to furnish an improved device of the class specified having a signal, and a cylinder and piston to move the same into display position, the signal being mounted in'the cylinder.
A further ob ect of the invention is to construct a device of the type alluded to having a signal and a shield or the like operated coincident with the movement of the signal into display position topermit the-signal to be 20 observed in the aforesaid position but to otherwise hide or obscure the signal. Still another object of the invention is the provision of a device of the type alluded to having improved means to control and actuate the cylinder and piston, preferably from the suction pipe of a motor vehicle.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the specification proceeds. 1 With the aforesaid objects'in view, the invention consists in the novel combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter de-' scribed in their preferred embodiments, pointed out in the subjoined claim, and illustrated on the annexed drawing, wherein like parts are .designated by the same reference characters throughout the several views.
' Generally described the invention provides a signaling device such as a direction indicator having improved means to move or oscillate the same into and out of display position. Said means includes a plurality of relatively movable coacting guide means. such for example, as a cylinder and piston, which may carry the signal and oscillate therewith. The
cylinder and piston may be operated from the suction pipe ofa motor vehicle, or the like, to elevate the signal, and the device is gravity operated'to drop into undisplayed position. The signal may be mounted in an extended end portion of the cylinder, and a shield to obscure the signal except in display position thereof is reciprocated coincident with the oscillation thereof. A valve' permits the operating means to be readily controlled. 5
The advantages of the invention as here outlined are best realized when all of its features andinstrumentalities are combined in one and the same structure, but, useful devices may be produced embodying less than the whole. v
. It will be obvious .to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, that the same may be incorporated in several different constructions. The accompanying drawing, therefore, is submitted merely as showing the preferred exemplification of the invention. Referring 'in detail to the drawing, I show a complete signal or direction indicator system comprising a plurality of direction indicators, one to indicate a ri ht and the other a left turn. One of the in icators is shown in displayed or elevated position and the other in the osition' of rest. Each indicator comprises a racket-1 onwhich a cylinder 5 is pivotally mounted at an end thereof at 2. Reciprocating in the cylinder is a piston 6, the same being connected by a link 10 to a pivot 9 on thebracket. Accordingly, reciprocatorymovement of the piston in the cylinder is accompanied by ivotal movement of the cylinder and the lin about their respective pivots. In a prolongation of the cylinby a shield 11 slidable upon the cylinder in the manner of a sheath. A link 7 connects the sheath with the link 10 to reciprocate the sheath to permit the lamp 3 to be seen in the elevated position of the indicator, and to tact surface, which recess will connect pipe 32 shield the same in the lowered position of the said indicator.
To reciprocate the pistonin the cylinder, any suita le means may be provide the respective indicators with the induction pipe of the motor vehicle. The suction causes the indicator to be lifted, and gravity returns the same to normal position on release of the suction.
To operate the indicators as desired, a control device communicates with the aforesaid .pipes. Said device comprises a body 25 having ports 34,, 35 and 36 therein at which the respective pipes 31, 32 and 33 connect therewith. The pipe 32 is connected with the engine induction pipe, and the pipes 31 and 33 engage the said body with the right hand and left hand indicators respectively. In the body, is a plunger valve 20 operative to connect or disconnect the ports, said valve being actuated by a lever 13.
The valve 20 has a coaxial groove or recess 4 to intercommunicate port 35 with either of ports 34 or 36, according to the position of the valve.
A further feature of the invention is that the body 25 is so constructed as to supply auxiliary air to the engine manifold to produce a proper mixture under certain conditions. For this purpose, the port 35 extends to the outer surface of said body and receives a plug 23. The latter carries a pointer 24: movable over a proper scale. The said plug has a central bore 12 communicating with a" transverse triangular opening 14: in the plug. By turning the plug the area exposed in the opening 14 may be varied, and consequently the quantity of extra air drawn therethrough by the engine may be regulated.
In Figs. 3 to 5 is shown a modified control means wherein the body and valve take the form of two relatively rotatable members 15 and 16 which have engagement upon frusto-conical surfaces. The member 15 is pro vided wth a handle 17 by which it can be turned to any one of three positions. The pipes 31, 32, 33 are connected with ports on the under surface of member 16. The member 15 is formed with a recess 18 on its conwith either of pipes31 or 33 according to the position of the member. The member 15 has,

It is thus seen that I have provided a device which fulfills the several objects of the invention and is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.

In a direction indicator for motor vehicle having an induction pipe,the combination of a suctlon operated member, operating the indicator with a control device comprising a cylinder having three ports-therein, one of them open to the atmosphere and pipes connecting the other two ports of said cylinder With the said member and induction pipe of the motor vehicle engine, a control valve fitting within and operable in said cylinder and having passages therein adapted to properly register with the three ports in such a manner as to inter-communicate the port connected to the said member to the port connected to the induction pipe and to the port open to the atmosphere, means for operating said amount of extra air drawn into induction pipe by said motor vehicle.
