Description

March 11, 1930. c. c. CAUFFIELD LAMP CHANGER Filed June 1928 13 EN TOR.
A TTORNEY Patented Mar. 11, 1930 UNITED STATES CAR-L C. CAUFFIELD, OF NILES, OHIO LAMP CHANGER Application filed June 2,
This invention relates to a device used in changing electric light bulbs.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a device for the purpose of changing electric light bulbs in industrial plants or any place where the lights are not within convenient reach for an operator standing upon a floor.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a gripping member formed of a single piece of wire and rod, said gripping member being detachable from the handle member in order to change sizes of the gripping member to meet the requirements of the electric bulb to be removed or replaced.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a device having a pair of oppositely disposed circular gripping members, the lower halves of said gripping members provided with rubber casings.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangements of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perpendicular view of the de vice with part broken away.
Figure 2 is a perpendicular view of the device showing the same device shown in Figure 1, except rotated one-fourth of a complete rotation.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of upper edges of gripping member in detail.
Figure 4 is a perpendicular view showing the device in proper position on an electric bulb.
By referring to the drawing, it will be seen that I have provided a handle member 1, which may be of any desired length. Th1s handle member 1 is provided with an extreme upper end 2 With a metallic cap 3, which fits over the extreme upper end 2. This metallic cap 3 is provided with a central openfolded part 6, thereby 1928. Serial No. 282,404.
ing. 4,'directly above a recess 5 and to permit the reception of a folded part 6. This folded part 6 being a central part of a single wire or rod formed with two outwardly extendi-ng arms 7. Each of these outwardly extending arms 7 are provided with a coil 8, each having a gripping member 9. These gripping members 9 are circular in form with the exception of an upper central curved portion 10, for the purpose of guiding the grip ping members 9 when functioning on a bulb 11, so that the gripping members will slip over the curved portion 12 of the bulb 11, guiding the bulb 11 directly into and between the circular gripping members 9. As the gripping members 9 are forced upwardly over the curved portion 12 of the bulb 11, a contact is made with a rubber casing 13 which is tubular in shape and which is supported by having a lower half of each gripping member pass thru the rubber casing 13. This rubber casing 13 is fastened in this way securely to the lower half of the gripping members 9. i
In order to remove the entire device used for the purpose of functioning with an electric bulb, there has been provided a keeper pin lt'which passes through the metallic cap 3 and between the folded part 6. Due to the fact that electric light bulbs are of diflerent sizes, different sized devices for removing or replacing the electric bulbs, may be used in the handle member by removing the keeper pin 14; and inserting a different sized device for functioning on the electric bulb.
The rubber casings 13 are held securely against the curved portion 12 of the electric bulb 11 against the upper portion 10.
The curved portion 10 slides inwardly over the converging curved portions 15 of an electric bulb 11.
The keeper pin 14 serves in a dual capacity in that it is positioned between a space of the holding the gripping members 9 in desired relation to each other, so that free action may be maintained in the movement of the gripping members 9 when being positioned so as to function with an electric bulb for the purpose of removing or replacing the same in an ordinary electric socket.
What I claim is z y In a device of the class described, a handle member having a recess in one end thereof; a metallic cap over the recessed end of the member and having an opening in alignment With the: recess, a gripping menrber formed of a single Wire folded on itself to constitute a shank, said shank being adapted to be secured in said recess, two arms exte'nded out- Wardly from said shank, said arms having divergent portions, coiled portions, and -mu-- tually parallel portions, said parallel portions of said arms terminating in opposed spaced circular loops having outwardly-flaredupper portionsand rubber covered lower portions to facilitate, respectively, insertion andgripping of an electric bulb.
'Intestimony whereof I afliX my signature.-
