Description

March 4, 1930. N. o. BOZELLE MUSIC LEAF TURNER Filed March 15, 1928 I'Zq'u RE 1 Fro; 142E 2 Patented Mar. 4, 1930 PATENT OFFICE NATE O. BOZELLE, OF SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA MUSIC-LEAF TURNER Application filed March 15,
WVhen sheets of music are placed in the ordinary manner upon a rack, or piano, organ or other musical instrument, and in front of the musician rendering the music thereon, the turning of a leaf or sheet by the said musician seriously interrupts his performance.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a device that will function both as a holder of the sheets of music whereby to maintain the same firmly in the proper position, and as a means for mechanically turning the sheets as desired.
It is another object of the invention to provide a device of the character indicated whereby a sheet may be released and turned through the operation of a key by the musician by a movement similar to that used in the operation of a piano key.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of the character indicated that will be simple in form and construction, of few parts, economical to manufacture, and highly efiicient in its practical application.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective illustration of the preferred embodiment of the invention, parts being broken away.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail section on line 22 of Figure 1.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, I show at 1 an oblong case having a rearwardly projecting part 2 adapted to slip under the pivoted rack forming aportion of the front of an upright piano case, the forward portion of the case resting upon the shelf 3 as shown.
In the center of the rearward portion of the case 1 is rigidly mounted a standard 1 having a forwardly upturned hook 5 mounted thereon just above the case 1, and having a forwardly and downwardly turned hook 6 formed upon its upper end. In the present case this part 4 is set in a block 7 set in the bottom of the case 1.
A bearing is shown at 8 formed in the top of the case 1 and concentrically arranged relative to the standard 4. In the bearing 8 is revolubly mounted a hollow cylinder 9,
and in the cylinder 9 and connected thereto 1928. Serial No. 261,927.
and to the standard 4 is a coiled spring 10. Mounted on the cylinder 9 and exteriorly of the casing 1 is a laterally extending rod or arm 12 terminating in a pair of upturned parallel lingers 13 adapted to receive a sheet of music therebetween.
Rigidly mounted upon the left-hand end of the case 1 as at 1% are a pair of upstanding parallel fingers 15 adapted to receive a sheet of music therebetween.
The spring 10 is so mounted between the revoluble cylinder 9 and the fixed standard a that the arm 12 is normally held in contact with the fingers 15 which function as a stop therefor.
At 16 is shown a detent projecting upwardly through a slot 17 formed in the top of case 1 near its right-hand end and carried by a lever 18, the short arm of which is pivoted on the case 1 as at 19 and the long arm of which extends forwardly through a slot 20 in the forward edge of the case 1 and provided with a finger plate 21. Under the lever 18 is positioned a spring 22 adapted to normally hold it in a raised position as shown.
lVhen the device is in use the arm 12 is swung into the position shown where it engages the detent 16, and'a sheet of music is placed in position with the center of its upper edge engaging hook 6 and the center of its lower edge engaging hook 5, the lower edges of the two leaves of the sheet being fitted into the fingers 13 and 15. I/Vhen the player wishes to turn the right-hand leaf of the sheet it is only necessary to depress the lever 18 for an instant to release the arm 12 whereupon the spring 10 will instantly swing the arm 12 around its pivotal mounting until it engages the stop 15.
It is obvious, of course, that the device may be constructed to accommodate a number of sheets of music by merely increasing the number of arms 12 and detents 16.
is to be understood, of course, that while I have herein shown and described but one specific embodiment of the invention, changes in form, construction, and method of operation and assembly may be made within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
A music leaf turner comprising a supporting case a sheet-music supporting standard mounted therein and extending upwardly 5 therefrom, a bearing formed in the top of the case in concentric relation to the standard, a hollow cylinder revolubly mounted in the bearing, a resilient connection between the cylinder and standard to urge the cylinder to m rotate in one direction, a sheet-music supporting arm mounted on the linder concentrically with the standard, a etent mounted on the casin to engage'said arm and hold the same against the ur e of the resilient con- 15 nection, a stop to limit t e rotative movement of the arm when released by the detent, and a release for the detent.
