Description
sHAvINe BRUSH J. A. D. WATT Filed Feb. 10. 1928 M55 Ma.
4 2 f] JHB MJB M fl b 7] 4 w 4 mm 1 Patented Mar. 4, 1 9 30 UNITED STA JAMES ALEX DENBY WAT' I, OF LONDON, ENGLAND SHAVING' BRUSH 7 Application filed February 10, 1928, Serial No.
, 'one extreme position of the parts the hollow sleeve comes around the shank leaving the bristles free for use, and in the other extreme position the sleeve surrounds and protects the bristles, and having a detachable foot for the shank, which foot when removed from the shank alsoforms a cap to cover in the open end of the sleeve.
According to the present invention the detachable foot member is formed at one end with a recess or projection to engage with a correspondingly shaped portion at the end of the shank and at the other end has another recessed portion adapted to engage with the upper end of the sleeve.
In order that the invention may be better understood, it will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:- I
Fig. 1 is an exterior elevation of a preferred form of shaving brush constructed according to the invention in the position for use.
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation with the parts in a similar position to that shown in Fig.1.
Figs. 3 and 4 are similar views to Figs. 1 and 2, with the sleeve member moved to surround the bristles, and I 1 Figs. 5 and'6 are similar views to Figs. 1 and-2 with the sleeve moved to surround the bristles and with the foot detached from the shank and functioning as a cap to close in the open end ofthe sleeve.
In the drawings, 7 is the shank of the brush, which may be formed hollow with a closed lower end or may be formed solid as desired. The shank is provided on the exterior with a screw thread 8 and has mounted in an suitable manner in the upper end thereof the bristles 9.. The lower end of the shank has a reduced portion 10 and the portion of the shank coming adjacent the bristles is enlarged, the enlargement'being shown at 11.
12 is a sleeve adapted to fit over the shank r 7 and provided at the lower end with one or two turns of a screw thread 13 adapted to en- 253,396, and in Great Britain March 16, 1927.
gage with the thread 8 on the shank 7 14: is a member adapted to fulfill a dual capacity. This member at one end is formed with a recess 15 adapted to fit over and engage tightly with the At the other end this member is formed with a dome-like hollow interior 16, a partition 17 dividing the recess 15 and the dome portion 16. Beyond the dome 16 the member 1 1 is provided with an enlargement 18 adapted to engage over the upper end of the sleeve 12. The member 14 is provided on the exterior with serrations 19 and the sleeve 12 is also formed with serrations 20.
f To assemble the brush which comprises three portions, that is to say the shank and bristles, the sleeve and the member 14, the reduced end 10 of the shank is passed into the open end of the sleeve 12 which comes remote from the threaded portion 13. lVhen the screwed end of the shank comesto the thread 13 the parts are rotated to bring the screw threaded portions 13 and 8 into engagement.
Upon continued rotation the end of the shank H is projected through the screw threaded end of the sleeve 12. The member 1 1 can now be engaged with the reduced portion 10 as shewn' in Figs. 1 to 4: and in this position'the member 14 forms the foot for the brush. When the brush is in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 it can be used as an ordinary shaving brush and in these figures it will be seen that the bristles 9 project to the maximum extent.
By screwing the sleeve 12 with respect to the shank 7 it can be brought into the positionshewn at Figs. 3 and 4 so that the sleeve 12 surrounds the bristles 9. In this position the member 14 can'be removed from the reduced portion 10 and the enlargement 18 engaged over the end of the sleeve 12 as y shewn in Figs. 5 and 6. In this position it willbe appreciated that the member. 14 forms a cap to the sleeve 12 and entirely covers in thejbristles 9, the dome l6 accommodating theupper end of the bristles as shewn. The
reduced portion 10 of the shank.
Although the sleeve 12 and shank 7 have been shewn and describedin screw threaded engagement, it is of course obvious that/they may simply be in frictional engagement so that the sleeve can slide over the shank, or again the engagement may also include a pin and slot. In using the brush it is also possible where desired to have the sleeve 12 in any desired position intermediate the extreme positions of its movement with respect to the shank 7 so that the bristles 9 project from the sleeve only to an extent that may be desired.
Although the member 14 has been described as engaging with the reduced portion 10 by friction and as engaging by the enlargement 18 with the upper end of the sleeve 9, it is of course obvious that in place of these push-0n frictional engaging actions, in some cases the engagement may be otherwise effected for instance the end of the shank 7 may be screw threaded and the member 1A correspondingly threaded to engage therewith, or either or both engaging surfaces may;
be knurled or tapered. i
Similarly, the engagement between the member 14 and the sleeve 12 may be a screw threaded one. Further, in place of the member 14 engaging over the shank 7 in some cases the shank may have a recessinto which a projecting portion on the member 14 engages by frictional, screw threaded or other The invention is not limited to the particular forms or details of construction described as these may be varied to suit particular cases, within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America is i A shaving brush comprising a shank, bristles carried by the shank, an outer sleeve mounted for longitudinal movement on the shank and arranged when in one position to surround and protect the bristles, said shank and sleeve being provided with coeng'aging screw threads and means to limit the extent of movement of the sleeve, and a foot member provided at one end of the recess to receive and closely fit on the outer end of the shank and therebydetachably secured to the shank, said foot member being provided'at the opposite '5 closely fit on the outer'end of the sleeve and end with a recess to receive and with a chamber to enclose and protect the outer ends of the bristles.
In witness whereof I affix my signature.
JAMES ALEX DENBY WATT.
