Description
E. R. SHATTUCK TR'U'SS.
174,862. Patented March 14, 1876.
TNESSES.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN R. SHATTUGK, OF OLEAN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRUSSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,862 dated March 14, 1876; application filed March 4, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known thatl, EDWIN R. SHATTUGK, of Olean, in the county of Oattaraugus and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Instruments for Treating Hernia; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the construction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the pad. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same.
This invention has relation to hernial trusses and consists in the novel construction of the cavity of a truss-pad adapted to hold ruptures of. that class which must be allowed to protrude more or less in order to prevent pain.
The object of my invention is to provide a means for keeping the pad close to the body, by preventing the pressure of the rupture from forcing said pad outward.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the pad attached to the spring in the usual way. B represents the cavity or pocket, the mouth of which is of an oval or nearly oval form, the variation occurring at the upper part, where it may be slightly contracted. At the sides and bottom of said pocket or cavity the same is enlarged within the edge, as shown,.in such a manner as to produce angular edges a b, the object being to provide a cavity with an internal swell, corresponding to the shape of the hernial protuberance, so that when the pad is arranged the flange-like edges to b shall fall behind the hanging portion of said protuberance, and thus tend to prevent the outward pressure of the hernia from. separating the pad from the body.
As the pressure of the hernia is mostly downward, the lower part of the cavity especially should be out below the lower edge of the cavity-mouth. Fromthe top of the mouth of the cavity to the bottom of the latter the back part is formed on a gentle curve or incline, as shown. A good solid bearing is thus produced above the hernia.
What I claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved hernial reservoir herein de-' scribed, having the cavity B enlarged at the lower edge of the opening, and so constructed that the gut will incline downward or fall into the cavity below the angular edges a b, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWIN R. SHATIUCK. Witnesses:
J. F. JoHNsoN, JOHN N ESTER.
