Description

I 30 dicated by the line 5 of Figure 2, and
"Patented Feb. 18 1930 WILLIAM W. TOOKER, ICHITA, KANSAS TRUNK ATTACHMENT Application filed May 10, 1928. Serial""No. 2?6 ,637.
The invention relates to baggage trunks, and has for its principal object the provision of means by which the articles packed in the trunk may be securely engaged to hold. them 5 and prevent them from being tossed about in the trunk.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a frame adapted to engage the articles packed in a trunk and providing clamping'means engageable by the wall of the trunk to hold the frame in close relationship with the articles packed in the trunk to prevent them from being tossed about in handling the trunk. i
The invention will be described in detail hereinafter and will be found illustrated in theaccompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a conventional trunk showing the lid partly broken away to disclose the attachment arranged within the trunk. I Figure 2 is a fragmental longitudinal sectional view on a plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Figure 1..
Figure 3 is a similar view on a plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Figure 1..
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view on a plane indicated by the line 44 of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a sectional detail on a plane'in- Figure 6 is a sectional detail on a plane in dicated by the line 66 of Figure 4.
' In thev drawings similar reference characters areused to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
A conventional trunk is indicated at A and shows the attachment applied thereto, and comprising a frame 1 made up of a plurality of bars preferably made of suitable gauge wire and having longitudinal and transverse members Qand 3, respectively, said members being secured in any suitable manner where crossed and provided with downwardly undulated portions 4 and 5, respectively, be-
tween the junctions of said wires 2 and3, said frame forming a cushioned structure to engage clothing or other articles in the trunk to hold them from movement by the instrumen.
' talities to be hereinafter described.
6 5 Securable to the side walls of the trunk A are ratchet members 6 a and 7, the ratchet members-Gbeing provided with recesses 8 having ratchet teeth 9 on theinner walls of said recesses, while the side walls of the recesses are provided with oppositely :di-sposed vertical. grooves 10; *Ratchet members Tare provided with ratchet teeth "11 and: an upstanding-shoulder 12 13'.indioates a l atch barpivota1ly engaging members 7 as shown at '14- anchengageable byfia latch member 15 to'close the' entrance to said'teeth 11. 16 indicates clamping bars adapted to engage the frame 1 and engageable j at their ends by ratchet :teeth '9 i and 11, said i clamping bars 16 "being provided with laterally extending lugs or pins 17that engage inthe-i grooves {10, it'being understood thatlby lifting the end l8 of latch bar 1'6when releasedifrom the teeth 11 the end 19 of each bar 16 will be released from the teeth 9 and the bar may be raised or lowered to the position desired to clamp frame 1, while by moving the bar 16 into horizontal position end 19 may engage one of the teeth 9 while the end 18 may be engaged by one of the teeth 11, and may be secured in engaging and clamping position by latching the bar-13 by means of the spring latch 15. The end 18 of each clamping bar 16 is provided with an upturned lug 20 that extends into a groove 21 at the rear of teeth 11 to securely engage the end of the bar with said teeth. WVhen the device is in the position shown in the drawings, the articles engaged by the frame 1 will be securely held from movement in handling the trunk, the advantages of the invention being apparent in instances when the articles to be carried in the members having teeth extending transversely of the trunk, grooved guide members arranged adjacent to said ratchet member, the other ratchet member having teeth extending longitudinally of the trunk, a clamping bar adapted to engage said ratchet members, a
transverse pin on said clamping bar engaging said grooved guide members and slidably mounting said clamping bar, a latch bar pivoted adjacent to the second mentioned ratchet bar to hold the clamping bar in engagement therewith, and a frame engageable by said bar and adapted to engage articles in the trunk.
2. A trunk attachment, comprising a ratchet member adapted to be secured to a Wall of a trunk, said member being recessed,
ratchet teeth on the inner face of the recess, the opposed Walls of the recess having grooves therein, a clamping bar adapted to engage at one of its ends said teeth, transverse lugs on said clamping bar'and engaglng 1n said grooves, an upstandlng lug on the other end of said clamping bar, a ratchet member adapted to be secured to the opposite Wall of the trunk, the teeth of said ratchet member arranged at right angles to the plane of the teeth in the first mentioned ratchet member and adapted to engage the other end ofthe clamping. bar, said ratchet member having a groove in the, rear of the teeth aforesaid to receive said upstanding lug on the clamping bar, a latch bar pivotally secured to said ratchet member to hold the clamping bar engaged thereby, means to hold the latch bar in latching position, and a frame engageable by said clamping bar and adapted to engage articles in the trunk.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
WILLIAM W. ,TOOKER.
