VIBRATOR HOUSING Filed oct. 15. 1923 2 Sheets-$heet 2 Patented 1? eb. 18, 1930 UNITED STATES GEORGE B. PICKOP, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO MALLEAI BL PATENT OFFICE E mow FITTINGS COMPANY, OF BBANFORD, CONNECTICUT VIIBBATOR HOUSING Application. filed at... 13, 1923. Serial No. 688,449.
' My invention relates to vibrator housings and more particularly to a device adapted to support' or carry a vibrator, and provided with means by which it may be securely and rigidly attached to the object, such as a core box, flask or the like, which is to be vibrated.
It is sometimes diflicult in fouhdrypractice, to remove castings from the boxes or flasks in which they are made and very ofte'n it occurs that sand, dirt or other matter -adapted to embrace a lug or .trunnion secured to the core box, flask or other article with which the. vibrator is intendedto be used, but sucha securing means is ineflicient and not very effective for the reason that the connection between the vibrator support and trunnion is not rigid and, therefore, a considerable part of the vibration will be absorbed or lost in this loose connection and will not be imparted to the box or flask.
One object of my invention is to overcome the disadv .mtages referred to above and to provide a vibrator support with means by which it ma be rigidly secured to the device upon w ich the vibrator is intended to act and which connection at the same time may be quickly made and also quickly detached'. Y
Another object of my invention is to provide an improved vibrator supporting member which inay not only be rigidly attached to the box or flask with which it is to be used, but which is also adapted to have the vibrator itself rigidl secured thereto.
A still further ob]ect of my invention is to rovide the vibrator supporting member wit a loop in the form 0 a hook or eye by which it may be quickly attached to a lug or trunnion on the box or flask to be vibrated and to provide a wedging member designed to enter the loop and urge the wall of the latter into firm and secure engagement with the lug or trunnionto make .a rigid connection between the parts.
To these and other endsthe invention 0011- sists in the novel features and combination of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed. v
' In the accompanying drawings:
Fig.1 is a perspective View of a foundry flask supported by vibrator housings embodying my invention;-
r Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the hous- I ing' Y Fig. 3 is a side elevational view ofthe same; I
Fig; 4 is an end view;
5 is a viewsimilar to Fig. 2 showing v .a slightly modified form of construction;
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary side elevational view of one end ofthe housing shown in Fig. 5;
Fig. 7 is an enlarged detailed view of the key or wedge member used in connection with the housing shownin Figs. 1 to 4;
Fig.8 is a View similar to Fi 7, showing I the wedge member used in the modification shown in Figs. 5 and 6, and,
Fig. 9 is an enlarged detailed view of one of the flask trunnions.
In Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings I have shown the vibrator housingslO and 11 attached at their lower ends to a foundry flask 12, from which the sand maybe removed When the vibrators are set in operation. The flask 12 may, of course, be a foundry flask of the usual or-any preferred 7 form and may be provided with means by which the vibrator housings may be attached thereto in a convenient and suitable manner.
In the form shown, the flask is provided upon each end with lugs or trunnions 13 "adapted to be embraced by a loop in the end of the housing.
The vibrator housings 10 and 11 'may be identical in form and each is provided with a U shaped body portion having a base 14 and side members 15 and 16. Between these side members is formed a U shaped seat for the vibrator mechanism 17, the casing of which is provided with end heads 18 and 19 having laterally projecting lugs 20 and 21 which may be secured to the ,ends 15' and 16 of the. housing by the bolts 22 and '23. v
f It will be observed that the vibratonmechani'sm is arranged by nachining or otherwise Y i 'to fit snugly between the inner faces of the side members 15 and 16,'so that the ends 18 and 19 will he held securely in place by these I vibrator may be, conveniently attached .to the various devices with which it is used. Upon the wing 25 is shown an eye or ring 27 which 'in the application of my invention shown in Fig. 1, is adapted to receive a'hook or the like '28. The wing 26 is provided witha hook 29 which is adapted to receive the trunnion 13 on the foundry flask 12. It will, of course, be apparent that ifthe trunnion or lug 13 is merely received loosely in the book a considerable part of the vibration will be lost, and for this reason the sand'or casting will not be shaken fromthe flask as readily as will be the'case when a" rigid connection is made between the vibrator housing and .the flask.
' For. this pur ose, I have provided the wing 26' with "a-T s aped keyway 30, in which is movably .mounted a tapered key. 31, which may be moved across the hook after the latter has been slipped over .the trunnion .13, to
its -.aga1nst the hook of the housing. Adjacent wedge lthe trunnion tightly between the "lower suriace' of the key and the lower po r-.-
tion of the hooks The key 31 is provided with side flanges 32'and 33 so that. it .is' T, shaped in cross section, the flanges serving to properly guide the key in the correspond mgly shaped keyway 30. The key mayalso be 'providedwith stops 34 and 35,1 by, whichits movement transversely; of the book 29 may be limited. As has been stated, the lower ed eof the key or wedge melmber 31is' inclinedlso that the keyis wedge shaped and will have a wedging action when movedrin 'deway to rigidly clam the trunnion the front 'end of the key the latter may be cut awayas shown at 37 soas to rovijde for the entrance of the trunnion into t e hook. v
In F1gs.- 5jand 6-1 have shown a somewhat modified form'of. my invention wherein the v 1 housing 10- instead of being provided with a hook upon the end which is adapted tobe' attachedto the flask, is provided with a elosed'ring40. The ring in this case is adaptto be slipped over the end of the trun-' 'mon, which isther'euponclamped rigidly in' lace by means of the-tapered key .41, the acon of which is similar to the key 31 already described. The key may be recessed as shown .tion and within at 42, adjacent its front end, to admit the trunnion or lug 13 intothe ring 40. After the trunnion has been "received in the ring, the'wall of the latter will enter to some extent the annular groove 43 therein, and will then permit the key'to be moved transversely so 1' that-its'tapered' lowerv side will wedge the trunnion securely against the side of the ring 40. v v It-will be apparent that'in .both forms of my invention which I have illustrated, I have inay e secured rigidly to the foundry flask or core box with which it is used, so that the efficiency of the vibrator will be greatly increased;
It will be seen. that, as shown in device to be vibrated or flask 12, is suspended from the hook 44, which may, of course, if
desired, be attachedto a crane or suitable means for handling the flask. The vibrators and housingsv 10 and 11 are included in the connecting or suspending means between the hook and the'flask, so that they constitute a Fig. 1, the
part of :the supporting means for the flask.
Bfy providing the vibrator housings as part 0 the suspending means for the devices to be vibrated, it will be apparent-that these de-.
vices may be handled expeditiously and conveniently and movedfrom place to place while the vibrator is connected thereto. Moreover, by providing a rigid and firm connection between the vibrator housings and the flask, and-atthe same time a connection. which is capable of;being readily attached to and detached from the flask, that the device will be very efiicient in operation and will result in a saving of time on the part of the operatives. v
- While IV have shown and. described some embodiments of my invention, it will be .un-
' and variation within the spirit of the inventhe scopeof the appended.
