Be it known that I, EDWARD R. SwANsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Granite City, Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Chaplets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to chaplets which are used in making sand molds for castings.
It will be understood that chaplets are used principally for maintaining the desired space between cores and the walls of molds and for supporting said cores against sinking, sidewise movement or floating while the molten metal is being poured into the mold. It is not always possible to make the core, chaplet and mold fit snugly together so as to hold said chaplet in proper place and when the molten metal is poured into the mold the force of the inflowing metal very frequently shifts the chaplet from its proper position, and as a result, the mold and the resultant casting are damaged. To overcome this undesirable result, it has been the practice to place the chaplet in proper position in the casting space and to secure it to the mold or to the core by driving one or more nails alongside the edge of one of the plates of the chaplet, the heads of which nails overlie said plate, thus retaining the chaplet in proper position. This practice adds considerable to the molding cost inasmuch as it requires several nails for each chaplet and involves the expenditure of considerable time by the molder in setting the nails.
My invention contemplates the provision of a chaplet constructed so that parts of each plate project beyond the corresponding edges of the opposite plate with nail holes through the projecting portions, thus permitting a nail to be entered without interfering with the opposite plate and by virture of such construction, the chaplet will be maintained in proper position and held against movement in any direction by a single nail.
My invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter more fully described,
claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of a mold with chaplets of my improved constructlon arranged between the mold walls and core. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of my improved chaplets. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the chaplet. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modified form of the chaplet. Figs. 5 and 6 are plan views of further modified forms of the chaplet.
The preferred form of my improved chaplet as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 and comprises a pair of plates 10 which are subtantially square orrectangular, said plates being connected by a centrally arranged shank or post 11. These plates 10 are preferably of the same size and shape and they are arranged so that the corners of one plate project beyond the corresponding edges of the opposite plate and formed through one of' the projecting corners of each plate is an aperture such as 12. As illustrated in Fig. 1, the chaplets thus constructed are positioned in the casting space 13 between the mold walls 14 and the core 15 and when they have been properly positioned a single nail 16 is inserted through one of the apertures 12 and driven into the corresponding mold wall or core, thereby firmly anchoring the chaplet and holding it against movement in any direction.
In the modified construction illustrated in Fig. 4, the chaplet is formed of a strip of sheet metal bent to form a substantially rectangular body 17 one end of said strip projecting slightly beyond said body as designated by 18 and said projecting end being provided with a nail hole 19.
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 5, the chaplet is formed of a pair of substantially circular plates 20, united by a post or v or oval plates 24, united by a shank or.
post 25, said elongated plates being arranged substantially at right angles to each other and each plate having a nail hole 26 formed in one end.
Chaplets of my improved construction are comparatively simple, can be easily and I changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts of my improved chapv let can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described, Without depart v ing from the spirit of my invention, the
scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A chaplet comprising a shank, plates fixed to the ends thereof, each of said plates being provided 'with a portion which projects beyond the corresponding edge of the so that a portion of one of said plates projects beyond the corresponding edge of the other plate, said projecting portion bein perforated, and a shank rigidly fixed to an connecting the central portions of said plates.
